I'm seeing lots of comments from people being inspired by this. I just want to tell y'all that if you want to reduce waste you don't necessarily have to go zero waste right away. Start small. Buy a reusable straw and don't use plastic ones. Carry around a reusable bag with you so you can refuse plastic bags. You can even use a fixed or attachable bidet instead of toilet paper. Not only does it reduce waste it's also a much cleaner alternative. There are lots of small things you can do. Imagine if lots people made small changes like this to their lifestyle. It can have a huge impact on the environment. Be the change you want to see.

EDIT 2: hii i wrote this when i was 15 and was radicalised by right winged content on youtube and reddit. protests are extremely valuable especially in regards to getting voices heard on injustices. honestly at this time i was probably just angry at my friends for protesting without actually knowing anything about climate change, which actually doesn’t matter because the more people the better, voices will be heard. in all honesty, i think this idea of “zero waste” can be a bit impractical. if you can do it, that’s great! but ultimately everyone’s situation is different and zero waste is huge huge goal for many. just do what you can :) and maybe that’s protesting!!

@raapyna85445 жыл бұрын
@@wilmab4120 Yeah. I learned that landfills produce methane (like, considerably), so even replacing fossil fuels with burning trash in high temperatures for energy would be a positive change. Of course, replacing raw materials for products with recycled materials would be the best. But I'm sure that currently there is an excess of material, that doesn't need to be turned into new things - because we have too many things, and because some things are unrecyclable - so some of it can be burned. In Finland there really aren't actual landfills anymore. The one in my town has been turned into a recycling centre and the piles have been sealed to the ground, are cleaned with dry compost and some have been turned into downhill skiing slopes. I think a good option for previous landfill sites would be reforestation. The town sends a pamflet to each household annually about the sorting of the trash and where it can be dropped. Dropping sorted recyclables at the local recycling bins is free, but the trash truck charges a fee, and the recycling centre charges you for dropping your big or dangerous waste there by weight. It's cheaper for the individual to reduce and recycle their waste. But I find it's rarely talked about.

No need for drastic change instantly. I was 8 when I heard about global warming and wanted to do something about it. I started turning off lights I wasn’t using, even though I was so lazy I always protested. The habit moved to turning off powerpoints to not using the aircon everyday and walking instead of driving. I’m 21 now so it may have taken a while to get to where I am but I have definitely lowered my carbon footprint and everyday I think of little ways to change. It doesn’t need to be drastic at all for you to make a difference.

I do really appreciate what she strives to do and I'm impressed with her environmentalist efforts (much better than I'm doing) but I think the phrase "zero waste" needs to be changed. Creating waste is a symptom of being alive: there is no such thing as living without waste and by emphasizing the "zero" in zero waste, I think it can discourage a lot of people who want to practice better environmentalism by saying "oh, well I can never make NO waste..." Perhaps "limited consumption," "minimal waste," etc would be less dissuasive and more correct.

I like to live in Nordic countries, since here it's basic to recycle everything. You even get money when you return some of your used glass/plastic bottles and soda cans to a recycling station (let's say a bottle costs 1,20 €, you get 0,20 € back when you return it.) Paper, cardboard, glass, metal and organic waste trash cans are almost all basic in the cities' apartment complexes. In Sweden the whole society has recycled even plastic for years already, the other Nordic countries followed some time behind (correct me if I'm wrong.) I now live in Finland and it's a thing that in a couple of years from now, there will be a garbage tax for every household's unrecycled trash. As long as you recycle and throw the trash in the bins where they are meant, throwing trash away is free, but everything "mixed" will have a price.

It's true but consumers, especially from rich countries have a great impact on the policies of companies. By not buying from companies who use child labor or are destroying the environment they force these companies to adopt better practices. @Xia-hu5 жыл бұрын
@@MurmullosdelWest it does work, and a lot of stuff you already buy are made of recycled plastic or recycled paper. It's mostly that people don't do their part and throw everything into one trashbag. I see a lot of people throwing paper into plastic recycle bins and clothing into paper recycle bins, and so it all has to be screened and cleaned, which is an additional step is that makes recycling more expensive. I work in the plastics industry, a lot of our customers, big OEMs and smaller ones too are now consciouscly looking to include recycled plastic into their products. Not everything can be made from recycled plastic though, since plastic starts losing some of its original properties like toughness or fire retardance or heat retardance or impact resistance when it is being recycled (it essentially needs to be molten again and the heat reduces these properties). So things you want to be durable, for example a car bumper to save your life in an accident, it cannot be made in recycled plastics. You wouldn't want your airplane parts made out of recycled plastic, either. But many things can be manufactured from recycld plastics and companies are now increasingly make the effort to do so. Also because we are ultimately running out of oil, so ...
@MurmullosdelWest5 жыл бұрын
@Teemeah ok I don’t work recycling and in my home they recycled which is better than throwing them away to the earth, but still it is 100% better if we stop buying things cover in plastic. By that being said, where I live people “recycle” but they don’t clean their plastic and when it’s going to be processed the “batch” of plastic that is recycled is contaminated and so it can’t be used. And then we ended up with more trash. And there’s a lot of ted talks were they explain why recycling it isn’t working

USA should learn to decompose trash like how Singapore did, sorry if I’m offending some people. It’s just, Singapore can destroy trash in 1 day. It’s amazing

It's not offensive. It's truth! US got a lot to come up in. And I'm an American saying this.

I've been living in Thailand for a few months now, and it made me realise the importance of culture around trash. Here, when you go and buy street food, it's packaged in a plastic bag, with another plastic bag to handle it, and a smaller plastic bag of sauce inside. Your drink is in a plastic cup, which has got its own plastic bag. It doesn't matter if you're eating alone, if you take three small packs of food, they will give you three forks. Sometimes you have biodegradable stuff like banana leaf, inside your plastic container. It really highlights how you need to have around you places and shops and resources that allow you to buy package free, and people willing to do things a bit differently. Because trash is convenient and cheap. That's why I'm thankful for regulatory changes, like the prohibition of plastic single use cups and utensils.

i cant stress how much i wish everyone was like her. i literally think about how much better the world would be if everyone actually sorted their "trash", every single time i take out my own garbage/recycling/compost.

It is! If I can give u an advice as someone whose been living low impact for about a year now: don't pressure yourself into being perfect and don't hate yourself if all your trash doesn't just for a mason jar. It's hard and sometimes expensive and honestly just reducing your waste as much as possible is good enough! 💛
