In this video, I build a modern coffee table from rift sawn white oak. This coffee table is not my design and was an interpretation from a photo sent to me. I’ve built a few coffee tables over the years, but none with so many woodworking mistakes that needed to be problem solved and overcome. LOL. But hey, those are always the best lessons. In the end, the modern coffee table turned out great and I’m happy with the final result. I hope you enjoy following along with the process of building this white oak modern coffee table! #midcenturymodern #modernfurniture #coffeetable

Not sure if I clicked the right place to reply. Great looking table and I appreciate the mistakes and how to over come them I have learned far more from my mistakes then when everything goes correctly not that that happens to me to often. Can you tell me is that a little cabinet scraper laying on the bench in one of the sanding sections of the video and can you let me know so you like it and if so where do I get one? Thank you.

Great video Keith. Really glad you choose to stay on this platform. I think it’s important that talented people like you share the complexity and challenges of good woodwork. It’s inspiring to those interested in learning and a valuable lesson to those who wonder why custom work seems expensive. The quality of your work is why it’s worth it.

Totally agree. There is a bigger problem to me, that aesthetically this table doesn’t quite work. The “legs” are too wide. The radius where the base meets the legs is too big. The easiest way to balance this design wound be to put a large radius on the bottom corner of each leg. The table top is too small for the base. An overhang of a couple of inches would look better.

If I got a dollar everytime a woodworker on KZbin says "I use a Domino only for alignment, nog for strenght. The woodglue is plenty strong enough by itself"... I could easily buy two Domino's 😅

This table arrived well packaged and on time. kzbin.infoUgkxn94T8Mu1iMnsLCMNOI9srXSsLkI4JXKW Like another reviewer advised, I pulled everything out and made sure everything was included (everything was!). I built it alone and it took me about an hour. The color is great and for the price the lift part works well. As others have mentioned, it’s not the smoothest opening/closing, but it works. The screws do show, but I plan to order white sticker covers if that bothers us too much. Really happy with this table! UPDATE: it’s been over a year since we got this coffee table and we still love it! It gets HEAVY use as our dining table, foot rest, and school desk. Over time, the opening and closing mechanism has gotten smoother. I added a new photo with the white screw cover stickers. They blend in perfectly and make it look a little cleaner. 100% recommend!!!

Sometimes when a product is looked at, we may think, “No big whoop”. Until you see the amount of finesse that goes into a product like your table. Incredible. So, if you were asked to make another, do you use this existing piece to use as a giant template and write down everything you can think of, so the next one goes a bit smoother? One observation noticed (and helped me to feel, “It’s okay”,) is that (my son and I being newbies), seems like my Laguna table saw gets loaded up with every measuring device, clamp, chisel, sanding block, Woodpecker anything and everything, and anything else that we can jam onto the surface… almost within 5 minutes. Like maniacs.
@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking
@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking Жыл бұрын
Hey Rick. I rarely make the same piece twice because that doesn't make good content 😜. And I still have the template for the curved legs and all the dimensions, so it's pretty cut and dry if I had to make another one. And yes, every horizontal surface seems to attract everything and anything to it almost immediately 😂

You should make yourself a sanding glove. Cut strips of velcro from a disc sander interface pad and CA glue them to the fingers of an old cotton glove. It makes doing the fiddly sanding like those half laps a lot less stressful on your hands.

Wow love this table! A very tiny change I would have made here, this is a personal taste thing but I always like when two "parallel" curves are following each other, I like to make the curves marry more aesthetically for me by adding the offset between the curves to the outer radius. So on the table top, when rounding over the corners, you'd actually take the radius of the table leg and instead of directly templating that onto the radius of the table top's rounding, adding the amount inset the legs are going to be to the radius of the tabletop corner's curve. Idk if that makes sense, kinda hard to describe in words haha. But regardless a beautiful table, and you will probably never even be looking at it from underneath to even notice lol

Beautiful coffee table. I would love to see that in walnut. Since you’re really not a fan of mortising, perhaps you’re next to investment could be a mortising drill press. Definitely on my list when I grow up and become a fine woodworker.

Seems like an easier fix on the leg width problem would have been to just cut the legs back another 1/8” each and then round over again. That would have gained a 1/2” and since you rounded over the table top to match the legs anyway. Just a thought, I’m probably missing something
