When my son turned four years old, I bought him a train set which was comprised of a 36" circle of track, an engine and a few cars. That was back in 1998. It has since taken over the entire basement. In the process I taught my son, carpentry, how to work with plaster and similar materials, how to work with electricity and a whole bunch of other things. I retired this year and I spend a lot of time on the layout. Thanks to you Ron and a few select KZbinrs, I have been able to tweak things and now I can concentrate on operations instead of trying to get things to work. Ha. Yet another great video. Thanks!

@Chrism32714 күн бұрын
@@classicmodeltrains Yep, my son loves this little guy but it is such a weird runner. Only likes high power and after about 5-10 minutes of running the motor gets a bit angry and needs to cool off for a little. And that wire that goes from the cab to the engine in such a nightmare piece to keep attached. Definitely researching trying to find a more friendly motor.
@jimanastasio19211 күн бұрын
I bought one of those 4-4-0s for my girlfriend last year. She didn't want me to spend too much money, which is why I bought an oldie. It looked great but didn't run with any kind of consistency. It took months of on and off tinkering to get it figured out. I know Ron doesn't have the time for all of that when making videos, so I will share what I have learned. First off, I noticed little lightning bolts jumping back and forth between the motor and inner wheels of the tender when going through corners. I put small washers between the trucks and tender body to raise it slightly and painted the bottom of the motor with liquid electrical tape. That fixed that. To improve contact at the forward truck of the tender, I ran the wire through a hole in the floor and soldered it directly to the washer I had installed. I didn't have to press down on the tender to keep the juices flowing after that. The last thing is to disassemble and clean out the motor. It comes out easily by removing the brass nut behind the motor and then it comes apart like any other pan motor. The motor housing doesn't have any vent holes in it, so dust from the wearing brushes can't escape. Clean that stuff out! Lydia's little "Durant" (she named it after the Thomas Durant character on "Hell on Wheels", not the real guy) runs beautifully now. I hope somebody out there finds this information helpful.

Happy Birthday to your mom. Give her a big hug. Been 23 years and 10 years respectively since I've been able to do that with mom or dad. Geeze that horn hook coupler seems to almost be a quarter the length of the tender. Used to keep an eye out for the Bachman bobber cabooses and the Lifelike flatcar cranes. A little cutting, sanding and putty work on the crane cab and mounting that to the bobber chassis and it makes for a very passable Burro crane.

When I was growing up, our family Christmas tree always had an HO scale train running underneath it on brass track. It was a 3.5' by 4' sheet of 1/2 inch plywood with the track attached with a STAPLE GUN. The staples were not shot into the plastic ties, but over them with the length of the staple running centered in between and parallel to the rails. This worked just fine for years, and they were easy to pull up one year when the mint-green painted plywood sheet got a big upgrade to that "grass mat" sheet of green sawdust glued to a roll of paper scenery item that was sold by Life-Like. This was no flimsy set up, as the plywood sheet was placed on the living room floor with an 8' or so real tree stuck into one of those stamped metal, three-footed tree stands which was nailed to the center of the plywood. The tree lights were a long, heavy strand of C7 bulbs. It all worked out just fine, as long as the tree was kept watered without overfilling that tiny tree stand metal water dish, and don't forget to toss a couple aspirin into the water, for some reason.

Maybe when I get some more downtime over the holidays. Could not place the name of the model this week, but the face I knew and where from. Pretty lady, died young. (ish) Man, when you were talking up the brass track, I was like "oh no, you didn't..." but yes you did. And I see you regretted it just a tad later on. LOL Then you had to go and tell a story about letting that old train run around the tree again, getting us all teary eyed. (or was it just me?) Now I'm going to have to get out my dad's old Lionel that hasn't seen the light of day in probably a good 40 years. Great video and thoroughly enjoyed it, as always. 😊

The solution to getting the full body off is so easily missed. Look at the pilot truck use a flash light to see what secret there is behind it. The fun part is getting the pilot truck off. Run a led light to the head light which helps with reducing the amps. Next I took my truck tuner and fixed the tight fitting wheels. Lastly I used Teflon grease on the gears with a taste of oil. And yes it pulls a lot of amps but they can craw very nicely. Swapping out the plastic wheels for metal make a very nice difference after a little more weight is added.

Hey Ron, thanks for another great video. I know Shadow from my neck of the woods. I noticed your collection of bicentennial Tyco items in your display rack. I too have started collecting the bicentennial Tyco trains. I don’t have the collection you have, but always looking for a good deal. Keep up the great work. 33%!!

Hi Ron. Well first off Happy Anniversary 🎉. Also all the best to your Mother on her birthday 🎂 Nice to see you have no snow, we got freezing rain today 😬. Nice little train set today, good job. The only thing that let it down was the track connections, good eye to catch that. Seemed to run great after that fix. I thought I could hear it kinda making chugging sounds . Nice you got a Christmas tree and a light show for it. Go 33%ers. Chat again soon buddy, Cheers G.

Hi Ron, congrats on 3 years and happy birthday to your mum... I am also finding that a lot of the older train sets are not weighted enough like that set... It looked as if that 3rd wagon wasn't on the rails correctly in the first place.. they are hard to get on the rails at times with those small wheels. Another great video.. I notice that you have a lot of the Tyco "Spirit of 1776" loco and wagon sets on the back wall.

Greetings Tim, Yes I'm making the display a bit more "Patriotic". Have more arriving by the Mail every day

Hello again Ron, I like the old school Bachmann trains from the 70's and 80's, Also, If i was working on that train set i would up grade it with Kadee metal wheelsets and knuckle couplers or replace the old time stock freight cars with Tyco's old time western freight cars that looks similar like the original stock that came with the set which is heavier.

I agree. I dont want to put that kind of money into this set because it will more than likely get sold off

When I see what set you had I said Oh No! You were lucky it had all the parts for the loco especially the drive shaft and you had a good gear but if you need a new coal car, I'm sure I have one around here some were. Great work and video, Jersey Bill

Thanks Jersey B! I was surprised it had all the parts and worked as well :-)

I saw this video and I clicked on it without any hesitation lol I have a strange obsession with these, both in ho and n scale and I’m literally restoring one of these as I type this comment! Love your videos. P.s. you should work on one of those old bachmann trim-a-train sets, just find one without a 4-4-0 those sets are cool.

Thanks for all your support Luke! I dont know what trim-a-train sets are.

Ohh it’s a thing Bachmann did where the train track it hung on the tree instead of under it. There is a section about it in ho seeker in one of these catalogs (not sure Wich one)

@lukesvintagetrains5495 Oh WOW!! That sounds cool, and kinda weird 🙂
