I'm in San Antonio, Texas. Weather app says 35°F feels like 26°F. My heater just went out, an since this being Texas a state where 'most' Texans prefer Summer Over Winter weather. Stores are lacking space heaters right now. So this video is coming very handy for me right about now. I explain all of this 1.) For people in upper statea q+s who are use to cold weather. 2.)are going to criticize this video because of the potential saftey hazard of bypassing the the thermostat an cut-off sensor. 3.) Plainly to thank people like this guy for making little everyday life situations more (relaxing/easier) & more knowledgeable.. SO I THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO. [("P.S. Nice Guns By The way man..Ha)].

I have a space heater that when you plug it up and turn on it will run and heat. Then after a few minutes it will turn off and want come back on until it sets for a long while. My guess it's the thermostat. Do you agree and if so how do I bypass it?
@awboat2 жыл бұрын
I think some people are just bypassing the thermostat and safety. I am going over to the garage right now and will cut the two black wire off the thermostat and wire them together and see what happens.
@markennes5208Ай бұрын
I've been using space heaters for a number of decades and what you describe is what has happened to me endlessly on all the heaters. Researching, I believe it is the thermostat. Apparently, it does become damaged and not just from getting kicked over. It can also occur from moving from low to high or high to low with the heater running. In other words, just powering the heater on - from off to low to high will begin to damage the thermostat. What happens is there's an electrical arc which occurs in the thermostat part when you move from low to high which is not good for the part. When it's new, it's okay, it'll keep running. But after 20 to 30 to 50 to 100 times, the arc will eventually damage the part to the point where the heater won't work as it should any longer. The trick is to use the thermostat to turn it off, rather than the off-low-high switch. If you must move from high to low, move the thermostat control all the way down first so it shuts off. Then move from high to low. Then move the thermostat control back to max. Do that for the life of the heater and it will last longer. That's the theory. Re your broken one, I'd consider doing what the video suggests. That's what I'm going to do. :-)

Thank you so much! My heater is almost the same. Exact function and wiring, but white with a different fan. Something happened with that rotary switch where one day I trusted the switch to OFF and it kept going. When I came back to use it, the switch wouldn't turn at all. I suspected the wiring was, like you said, a simple positive and negative. But the thermostat always worked. So what I did instead was I removed the switch and drilled a hole for a simple on/off toggle switch. For safety I got a 20A 125V AC toggle switch with that round metal lever that flips up and down. Then I cut off the 3 leads on that rotary switch that went to the heater and the fan. (The fourth lead is the hot input for the switch so it wasn't necessary to transfer since we were replacing the switch). I tied all of those wires in the rotary switch together to one of the new toggle switch leads. I tried the hot wire from the plug into the other toggle switch lead. Now I can flip it on or off, and I can still use the thermostat to control the fan speed.

@@tacitohomestead4851 update; i bypassed the bs themostat and the thermal sensor, for sure one or both were dead, i had a very noisy grumbling fan, i noticed when you held the unit inverted it was almost quiet so i took it apart again ( 4x in 24hrs lol ) and loosened the motor's two bolts and flipped the motor upside down. it's now on a test bench running wide open for a few hours to make sure nothing melts. I honestly wouldn't bypass a safety feature like that knowing that it broke because the kids kept knocking it over. You're just asking for your house to be burned down. If I didn't have mischievous kids, I'd just hard wire the heater like you did but use an external thermostat. There's no reason to cook a room to ridiculous temperatures, and the cycling will keep the cord and plug from overheating. In your case, I would go online and replace the thermostat/safety switch. You might have to drill out the rivets, and either install the new switch with a rivet gun or bolt it in. Your other option would be to get another heater, and use the old heater somewhere else. They're inexpensive. A new heater is a lot cheaper than a house. Also, just drill it into your kids to respect things like heaters. It will save them a lot of pain in the future.

I'm glad I could help. I may not be very technical savvy, but I can redneck something in a heartbeat. I didn't have anything to do that day so I figured I would tackle a broken heater just for fun. I never thought it would get so many views or comments. Some good.....Some bad lol. Sometimes you just don't have all the parts or are able to get them you just do what you can. Thanks for comment It's good to hear from you. Taco

I took out the thermostat and merited the black wires together. It works again but now the wire is overheating when pluged in. Anyone's know why?? Dont want to burn my house down lol

I would not use it if your melting wires. I haven’t had that issue with mine when I use them.

So many things wrong with this. If it causes a fire, your insurance won’t pay. Just buy the parts and fix it properly or buy new and keep old parts for spares.

Bypass a safety feature - no thank you!

Good information in a pinch but time to throw it away as soon as you can replace it. Saving $20 isn't worth the house fire. Wanting to go years on a heater like that is just stupid, especially when you have kids knocking them over. Now if you were mounting this to something solid, it wouldn't be so bad without the protections you removed assuming the thermal fuse is still in place. I personally use one of these in my garage and the tip over protection being absent is a requirement. But since I'm in the middle of a storm where I need it and it broke it's been bypassed, when it can be replaced it's getting dismantled and trashed.

Yea I agree. My kids are dead from my house burning down but I saved 27 bucks.

@@jeffkili8918 yep, true to my word I had modified my heater during the Texas snowmagedon (6 days of normal winter if you're not from a pansy state), I immediately bought another heater, snipped every wire in the modified heater and put it out in the trash. For someone to try to use it would take an incredible amount of negligence and it sitting in the trash right after our little mishap would make a tempting treat for a trash picker.

OG you can’t do that, maybe you should not make a video about this subject because you just don’t know as much. I don’t know much about Forced Air Space Heaters, and that’s what Im on this page, but my friend ur broadcasting how to bypass some very important safety features
@tacitohomestead48514 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your input. I did what I had to do to make the heater work . The parts on the heater melted before I wired it up so really the heater was defective before I bypassed everything. As a matter of fact every one of these heaters shorted out and melted the thermostat including all safety features without me touching it. I haven’t had any issues with them after I bypassed everything. I agree not the safest measure but we have heat.

Well, we all know it's not safe. We all know that this fix involves bypassing a safety feature. We are here because we want to do that. It is in fact sometimes useful to know how to bypass safety features, and not inherently irresponsible to simply make a video about doing that.

Here for old heater's alarm going off early. Current heated goes off and on every few seconds - both annoying as f***! So what was wrong - I did not come here for an obvious wiring.

I live in Canada. I have the same one but made from Konwin. The thermostat keeps clicking on and off. Only k ocked over once. It's the lower switch that's messing up on me. I can't find any parts anywhere. Watching your video now
