I bet you could have rebuilt the old starter for $25 or so. It's really easy if you can find the parts. Maybe hang onto the old one and rebuild in case you need one in the future.

Great video! BTW the motor is actually made by Yamaha but just rebranded. Later in the 80s there were also alot of rebranded Mercurys sold as Mariners but this and a few others from Yamaha as well.

Cool engine. I just buy last week a 15h a Mercury 2 stroke from 1997 for 250€ with the original spark plugs putted in! To much dust on the outside, but the inside was very clean and greased. Take it home and everything it's working has it should. The rubbers are like new and after cleaning the outside dust looks like a motor with months! The guy that sold it have it announced for months for 700€ but he doesn't know how to put "fueraborda" in Spanish and put "fora vorda" and never show listed on any search. I offer him 250€ and the guy accepted. 😀 Now I have a new outboard for a long long time.

What came of the starter not disengaging? What was the issue/fix for that?

@@markb571 there was a short inside the start button solenoid that was basically communicating to the starter that I was still holding the button down when I wasn’t. New one of those fixed it!

@@BoatBusters Had a customer drop off a 2000 Mercury 9.9 4STK. was submerged for a week. Drained and soaked cylinders for 24 hours,removed recoil and used a socket and ratchet to break it free. Carb job,oil change,impeller,lower unit oil n oil change, bill was twice your profit out the door. No driving and no buying and selling. Ever consider finding a space and fixing them for a living?
