Nice work and presentation. I flip a few outboards too. Specialize in 1980's Honda 4 strokes - they are pretty much bulletproof. One thing that I do to give the buyer confidence and get top dollar is to pressure test the lower unit. You might have to make your own fitting to screw into the lower unit fill holes. Then use a bicycle pump to pump it up to around 10psi. Then soapy water to to check all the oil seals for any leaks. There's a lot of cash to be make on these old motors. I find that most of them have been sitting in grandpa's garage for many years and just need the carb cleaned, an impeller and a new fuel filter
@BoatBusters5 ай бұрын

Hi I’d like some advice about an old Honda b100 that I picked up. When plugs are removed, I can’t seem to get any spark from them. I tried shooting some fuel down the carb and pulling with no signs of life. Is there a points ignition underneath the belt pulley? How do I remove that?

Most creative ask for subscribers I've seen in a while! You got me! Here's a question for you: if the motor fails either the compression test or spark test, what does that mean? Do you turn down buying it, or use that to negotiate a cheaper price? If you fix any that don't have compression or spark, I'd love to see a video on that too.
@BoatBusters5 ай бұрын
@@Lhopsecker Haha I appreciate that!! And those are great questions. If the motor fails to pass a compression test, I personally don’t buy it at all. Now somebody that’s into restoration for fun will likely be able to buy it for next to nothing with no compression, however to me this is just as much of a business as it is a hobby and the time spent rebuilding a powerhead is not worth it at all (and those parts are not cheap)… if the engine fails a spark test, I welcome that with open arms! It usually will let me negotiate a better deal and spark issues are not hard to fix when you know what to look for. Especially on small outboards like this one. My next video will have more details on diagnosing no spark!

Unfortunately on my first outing something happened and it bogged and died rather quickly. It was about a late 80's Evinrude and to marine shops (one a friend) said that it wasn't worth fixing. I wound up buying another 40 from a guy that works on engines. He checked mine out and said the compression was good but the coils were gone and most of the wires were melted. He checked to bore, rings and pistons and everything looked good so he cleaned that part up and put in new rings, coils and wiring as well as new impeller and rebuilt the carb. Yeah man for sure let's see you do it, clean out those channels. I want to see a full stream coming out of that water jet. I remember working on Old Johnson's back when I had old flat boats. I changed a few impellers and fixed a big Mercury ignition coil. Boating was fun but it always seemed to be a money pit. Take it easy, Casey

To help free dirt and debris in the cooling system in older o/b engines, we always started the engine, let it run for a minute or two to heat up the thermostat, then we’d shoot a couple short blasts of compressed air into the end of telltale tube. This reverse pressure that happens when doing this often loosens debris enough that cooling water can pump it free, allowing water to circulate properly through the system. Hope this helps!

@@c5back9 super interesting tip!!! Much appreciated. I’m definitely going to give it a try

@@BoatBusters I used to do o/b service several decades ago. 80% of the time this cleared obstructions and saved us a lot of time and owners a good deal of money.

@@BoatBusters usually if you give it a real short zap of air, that did the trick. It’s important that you see evidence of water circulating and exiting upper or lower drains though. If no water is seen pumping, shut the engine down and shoot air. Then restart to see if you get flow. Don’t let the engine run long without evidence of descent flow.

@@c5back9 for sure. Yeah these cylinders were at a good temperature but just would make me feel better with a better stream!

One more thing perhaps worth mentioning is the length of the shaft. I mistakenly bought an extra long shaft 1990’s Merc 9.9 2 stroke brand new in the box . Need to sell it and buy a standard shaft length for my boat.

Sooo, I like that you are getting into doing this. Yes, you can make some good money as well. I would like to see you use a bench when performing rebuilds on carbs instead of just throwing everything on the ground. You could very easily inject dirt into a clean environment that you just spent time on. Keep up the good work and maybe just maybe a little more organized....good video through...

@@racerxv6valvoline424 haha I set them on the pavement during the tear down and they never touched the ground after cleaning I promise 🤣 I will make sure to show my bench next time! Appreciate you watching and thank you for the compliments

I am in uncharted territory with a 1982 Johnson 15. The shaft is broken just below the upper spline. Do I have to pull the powerhead, or can I remove the midsection to get to it? I have never done either so pardon my ignorance.

The kind of spark tester you can adjust the gap on is better..... you should be able to hear the snap and see a strong blue spark.
