Oh wow! That's a lot of berries! I had (7) 100' rows at one time which is about the same as what you have. Any good recipes? Next spring these should really put out a lot of berries.

That is how I freeze my berries. But I run a quick rinse over them when I take them out of the freezer just to get the freezer-frost off. I'm weird about that. I think the frost leaves a weird taste on food.
@BIGALTX

Agreed. I should have said I rinse AFTER I pull them out. Thanks for clarifying :)

My blackberries are not sweet, do you have a tip on anything to help them. They are not as large as yours but they are nice size, but bitter, thanks for sharing, blessings
@BIGALTX
@BIGALTX 4 жыл бұрын
Make sure they are COMPLETELY black... no red on them. If there's any red it will be tart. If they are solid black and start getting a little dull black instead of shiny black, they are at their sweetest. So... don't pick too early... and ... don't wait too long. I'm sure that helps a LOT 😀 I'll try to do a video explaining that next week.

@@BIGALTX they are shiny black like yours. I thought there may be something you could fertile them that would help with the bitterness. Ok great a video would be great, thanks

My blackberry plants do nothing I got two one year. I bought the prime ark triple Crown, and Darrow thorn less, just leaves in MN. All I've managed to do is keep the plant alive. I insulate them over winter, tarp them, then it's oh look at the nice blackberry leaves, so sweet. I bought Famous Daves Texas heat bbq sauce though on sale! Hubris.

Beautiful berries! Do those Ark Freedom tend to grow more upright, or are they just as vining as others? They're thornless, so that's good for me!
@BIGALTX
@BIGALTX 4 жыл бұрын
The Freedom berries are classified as "erect", so yes, they grow much more upright than others. When shopping for berries always look for a berry that says it has an "erect" growth pattern. Some will say "semi-erect" some will say "sprawling"... The sprawling will not grow upright. Hope that helps, alan

You are the reason I am into blackberries and I planted PrimeArk Travelers, PrimeArk Freedom, and PrimeArk Qchacta (sp). The Traveler did not do well. I lost 7 out of 10. The other three still do not produce many berries after 2 years in the ground. The Freedom has done so good the first year, I ordered another 5 plants and the second year produce berries the size of yours also. That was in May. In late June and now July the Freedom is producing a second crop on the new canes. What I find odd is that of the same cane, some are really sweet and others are tart. Is this normal? The Qchacta (sp) had a late crop during June as a second-year crop. There was nothing the first year. Nice bushes but no berries. If I plant any more, it will be the Freedom. Thanks for getting my attention about berries when you did two years ago. We rinse and let dry our berries before freezing. The only thing I find really odd in when freezing the blackest berries, they all turn a dark red/maroon. Does this happen to yours? Have a blessed day and a blessed crop.
@BIGALTX
@BIGALTX 4 жыл бұрын
Yep... many of them turn a reddish color after frozen. Like yours, some will be tart on the vine too. I'm not impressed with the Quachita.

I agree I love mine in containers, They have been doing really well. I do need to weed around them and add some mulch in the container. I do have a question for you, The big ones of mine don't seem to be as flavourful as smaller ones. I have the same ones as you. However, I didn't look and see what plant it came from. What are your thoughts?
@BIGALTX
@BIGALTX 4 жыл бұрын
There's a lot of diversity from the berries. Even from some of the berries on the same canes. You just never know what you're going to get. Make sure they are VERY black... no red. Red makes them tart. Also, if they are just starting to lose their glossy color... getting a little dull, they seem sweeter

Black Raspberries are WAY better that black berries. Not the same type of fruit but blackberries are always tart. The only time I’ve had any that were not tart was when I picked them growing wild in the woods of New England.

MrDuffy81 I have Triple Crown thornless blackberries and they are tart if you don’t wait until they’re dead ripe to pick them. If you wait, they are amazing and sweet! My boysenberries are the same way.

Yep... any red at all on blackberries and they will be tart. Also helps if you wait till the color is not shiny... just starting to get "dull"

Great looking berries! I freeze mine the same way. This might be the answer for me. I have five 20’ rows of raspberries and almost as many blackberries and the grass has really taken over , especially my raspberries. I have some type of rhizome grass that’s terrible. I’m not sure the farmers in my area use these buckets. I’ll have to see if I can find them. Thanks!

Too early to tell right now. This year is my first year to use EBs and wicking tubs. One reason I used EBs, WTs and Grow Bags is to make the comparison for me, and for my youtube viewers. I'll do an end of season series of videos giving the strengths and weaknesses of them all along with my recommendations. Watch for it :)

My first crop on PAF in May was beautiful, but this second crop on my primocanes are yucky, I can’t decide if it’s birds or bugs, what should I spray? Do you actually prune this years primocanes in the fall for next years crop? I’m in east Texas and would love to see your place.
