HOW I GET MY KILLER VOCAL SOUNDS - NEUMANN M 149 Microphone - KEN TAMPLIN VOCAL ACADEMY
The Neumann M 149 Tube Microphone.
Most music artists spend a lifetime searching for that perfect guitar, piano, violin, drum kit, bass guitar and so on.
This couldn't be more true for studio recording audio engineers as well.
I happen to come from both worlds.
I'm an artist and an audio engineer and have owned dozens of vocal microphones over the past 30+ years.
And I am here to tell you with all sincerity that I believe that the Neumann M 149 is one of the best (if not the best), vocal microphones ever made.
Masterfully crafted with German excellence and what I consider to be "The Crown Jewel Of All Vocal Microphones", the Neumann M 149 is unlike any other, truly a class of its own.
Neumann has a burning passion for excellence in everything they do and go above and beyond with precision crafted performance. (straight up).
This is the first time in all of my years of singing, playing and recording experience that I have had the luxury of sharing my thoughts about the Neumann M 149.
I am not exaggerating, you can hardly go wrong with this Microphone!
You owe it to yourself to hear the difference.
It's time to stop struggling with second rate gear. Get the best, forget the rest and put the fun and amazing back into recording!
And as soon as you unleash the power of the M 149, you will quickly see why it is "The Ultimate Recording Mic!"
I hope you enjoy the video I have created to demonstrate this for you, as I have showcased many samples for you to check out its incredible versatility!

Voice over artist here. I bought my M149 in London 5 years ago and I also have an U87 Ai. I'm using a Heritage clone of the Neve 1073 preamp. I do my recordings using an Apollo Twin X Quad. My clients are very happy but sometimes when other talents are required for a project I've been receiving the same complaint all the time: My files are much better than theirs, so the engineers have a hard time when putting everything together. I guess sometimes quality may be a problem in my job.

I used this mic since 1995 I bought it then for $3800 . It’s been my main mic and never had an issue. I hardly never had to use eq. Just a compressor a high quality preamp and a pop filter for vocals. Been doing studio recordings since 1990 and I have not found another mic come close to overall sound quality .

Hey Ken, I've had the TLM103 with VT-737sp for a few years now, sounded amazing. Did my homework and went big for the M 149, came about a month ago. Sunday I'll have my first female singer taking it for a ride. I hope this will kick my recording studio in high gear. I've also built a reverb dead vocal booth and use Bricasti M7 for ambiance. I was shocked when I saw you were using the same gear, with success I might say! Thanks for the settings, they'll go a long way for me!

Hi Ken, Great video! I was just checking KZbin for info about some gear I just bought for my studio: Neumann M149!, Rupert Neve 5012, Avalon M5, dBX 160SL, and an Eventide H3000D/SE! I actually won them at an auction, and got a phenomenal deal, so I am super excited to use them. I will be re-tracking some vocals I demoed using an EVRE20, but now, on my M149 and 5012 preamp. Your video has really helped me to see what this mic can do, and it is great to see other high performance singers for a change! Best, Rek

Honestly, every voice is different. Most women would love a very Neumann-esque mic like the Blue Spark. Is this mic better? Yes. But sometimes the better the mic the worse the singer sounds as it picks up everything. The Spark is very forgiving for newer singers and good singers sound good too. But once you feel you've really developed your voice to great amateur and beyond. Neumann.

Thanks for sharing this demonstration, Ken. I have been using quality budget mics from Shure, and the one that I have been using the most is the Shure SM48 because it picks up the frequencies in my voice without making it sound muddy or boomy due to its built-in bass roll-off at 80 Hz, I believe. Also, the only vocal effect that I experiment with is the TC Helicon Duplicator which gives my voice a doubling effect when I sing through it. Again, great demonstration!

So right now my current setup is a Neumann U87 and a Avalon vt-737 and then sometimes I'll run the U87 through my Neve Shelford channel. But I've been looking for a better tube mic all I have now is the Warm Audio WA-8000 (Sony c-800g clone) which on paper yeah the spec are identical but sound wise it's not even close to the real deal c-800g. So I was having trouble deciding between a Neumann U67 or this M149 . Out of those two Neumanns which would you recommend ?

Hi Ken, a million thanks for this video! I was contemplating buying a U87 -for voice over- but now that I have seen and heard this, I am all for getting a 149. One question: since this mic is so good, why do you reckon it is the U87 which is mostly used in the big professional studios -at least in voice over-??

Emilie: Maybe Budget Thinking for U87 & U87 AI users. I just want to buy U87 AI BEFORE watching this video. Even Some Neumann Brand Online Shop just promoted U87 AI on the Homepage. I only just knowing Neumann M149 after reviewing one Blog to know that M149 is MUCH MORE Powerful & Sweet & Dynamic & Clear compared with U87 AI. Then I just found & reviewed this AMAZING video in the KZbin. U87 is one OLD History from 20th Century so Good Reputation globally so can U87 AI be easily sold out based on many old albums are recored by U87... U87 AI is just one COPY of the Vintage U87... But M149 really belongs to 21 Century!! Ken, How do you think @Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy

Thank you so much for this helpful video. Neumann m 149 and Avalon 737 are definitely on my list to buy now after watching it. I can definitely hear how forgiving the M149 is with higher frequencies compared to the TLM103. Also, I noticed your recording room had 'wooden' walls. I'd love to know or watch a video of how you set it up and what you use and do to optimize the sound.

One thing to keep in mind is that the M 149 is a tube mic (so it will be warmer than non-tube, i.e, fet, mics). Your TLM 103, which is also a good mic, is a fet (non-tube) mic.

This is Brian Ward down in Georgia. Please do a live performance mic video. I practice every week at a bar on open mic night and some nights it seems the PA sounds like my voice tone is great and other times it sounds like Kermit the frog. It really effects my performance when it sounds bad, I start to get self conscious. Do you have EQ tips or mic preferences? Thank you for listening 🙂

yeah, its a fantastic mic. no question about that. If anyone is considering buying a premium Mic i strongly recommend to take a look at Brauner Microphones as well. Its a small german Brand, all handmade in Germany, using only top notch material - following the philosophy that Neumann started out with. No compromises. You find vids of the prroduction and extensive interviews with Dirk Brauner on YT.

I was wondering the same, Jason. One thing for sure, the M 149 is a tube mic (so it has warmer qualities) and the U89ai (which I own) is a fet (non-tube) mic. But, both are top industry standard mics.

Terrific demonstration, Ken, incredible vocasls. Thank you. the 149 is on my "must get" list. I currently have a TLMs and use them frequently, but cardioid only. Thanks also for the settings. Notice that when not a duet its mostly hypercardioid? Also the preamp gain is at zero. Not familiar with the Avalon but how is the signal gain achieved? Thanks AC

Hi! Excellent reviews Ken. You could say that I'm an amateur singer whose (jazz/standard) genre includes Mathis, Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Buble & Connick. Upon watching your video, I am convinced that I loved the M149 however, I am on a working budget. Which of these microphones would you best recommend to me: TLM 103, Warm Audio WA47 & TLM 49?
@Khashyar
@Khashyar 2 жыл бұрын
Voices respond differently to different mics, and it's often recommended by audio engineers to try out a variety of mics to hear what mic sounds best with your particular voice.

@kentamplin
@kentamplin 4 жыл бұрын
I prefer the real Neumanns, mlg74. Emulations are simulations, and there are always subtle and sometimes not-so-subtle differences in the way the microphone responds to and couples with the voice. Often emulated, seldom duplicated.

Hi Ken, good video. I’m an opera singer recording at home. I have a vocal booth made of professional sound curtains. I own the Avalon and have a charter oak mic SA538. It’s often a struggle to find out how far from the mic one has to stand. I don’t have the financial to purchase the M149 it’s beautiful, however, what distance would you recommend - and would a Neumann make a difference with opening a operatic voice. Sometimes I get the feeling my mic which is large diagram €1700 so that isn’t that cheap, can’t handle when I get into the higher register and the power of the voice kicks in. When I’m too far from the mic the lower notes starts to get thinner. Love to hear your advice
@kentamplin
@kentamplin 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Josh, Single position cardioid microphones such as the charter Oak SA 538 versions A and B can be a little tough depending on the ambience in the room. Version B is more open sounding than version A. However in my opinion, compared to a TLM102 that has multi cardio and positions, it's hard to compare the amount of openness and air that you can hear in the mic. Also you didn't mention what Avalon you're using. Are you just using their preamp or do you have a 737SP? Typically you want to be about 3 to 5 inches off of the microphone. Some people prefer a much tighter closer intimate sound and so they practically eat the microphone when they sing. This is fine for intimate lower closer stuff but when it comes to any sort of belting or big voice stuff most microphones do not handle the load of a lot of volume being thrown at them without any space between the singer and the microphone itself. But in fairness, if I'm recording with an AKG for 414, I feel like the sound is too far away at 5 to 6 inches on a smaller diaphragm mic like that compared to the M149. So I'll sing into that microphone at 1 to 2 inches directly into the diaphragm. On the M149 are usually sing about 6 inches off that mic and open up the room sound because I have a room that was created specifically for vocals. But you are using a muted ambient situation that does not have any actual ambient sound. So my suggestion is about 3 to 4 inches should be OK. I have not used your microphone but I know a little bit about it.

@@kentamplin Hi Ken, hope you are doing well. Thank you so much for your reply and the time you took to answer. Really appreciate it. Wrote down all your tips and will try them out during recording. - I bought many years ago the Avalon AD2022 Pre and the AD2044 comp. I love the sound. 2 years ago I needed new gear and bought the UAD Apollo x4 and a Imac. Now I am doing everything using the UAD plug ins to record. I bought the 737 Avalon plug in from UAD and the Neve 1084, the manley voxbox and have some more stuff that came with the unit. Bought the capital chambers and some more stuff to make some good sounding vocal recordings....This year I made a PVC vocal booth and bought the professional curtains at vocalboothtogo. Very cool stuff and it works very well. No reflections but not completely dead. That is my home set up. The booth is around 1,5 meter by 1,5 meter. The Charter oak mic comes with a power supply that makes it possible to go from complete cardiod to complete figure 8 - I mainly leave it in the middle as advised by charter oak for recording vocals. There isn't so much info or videos about how to record operatic voices unless it is done in a professional theater or hall - nothing on home recording and how they do things there when they record in a normal room. I've seen some videos of Bocelli doing it at home but of course the video is more made for presentation than focused on how to record. If you have anymore tips about the pre's I have or maybe you say that the Avalon is the BEST choice to go for in my case, love to hear. Also about the polar setting of the Mic. Thanks in advance Ken :-)
