Hey friends in this video I'm going to discuss how I got a 4.0 GPA in college using cognitive loading techniques. If you've been searching for study strategies on youtube you've probably heard of active recall and spaced repetition. While there's no denying that active recall and spaced repetition are good ways to reinforced already-learned information, they do not address the fundamental principal of developing a deep understanding to begin with.
To engage with your course material in a way that promotes a deeper understanding, thus better grades, it is necessary to link new information to existing memory structures. In this video, I will show you exactly how I went about developing these memory structures by maximizing germane cognitive load.

​@@la_illaha_ill_allah how is your first comment at all related to the conversation? but yes I am and yes I listen to music whenever I want to. you seem to have a weird opinion about religion. And my comments wasn't serious by any means, just thought it's somewhat funny cause all the teenagers watch sped up tiktok clips with music and fast talking and presumably don't have the attention span to stick with a video about a boring or difficult topic. But ye it doesn't at all mean that other videos with no music can get a lot of viewers. Also imo people who watch andrew tate just fall for people who "act confident" and tell them how to think, and they don't really think for themselves (so, kids or insecure adults)

I also had a 4.0 GPA. My favorite strategy was to keep a step ahead of the class, as the syllabus tells you what is to be studied. So that while listening to a lecture, I was familiar enough with the subject matter that the lectures tended to give me reinforcement and clarity while greatly reducing the need for note taking.

This. This should be mandatory in this day and age, not enough people utilize the fact that you are at most 10 google searches away from finding all the information that you need, including the syllabus and a list of all the books you will need in the entire studies.

Been doing this since junior high , where I accidentally learn this trick. Go to the lecture prepared like you are gonna be examed and tested over this material. Once there, lecture is reenforcing what u already know and some new things, but ur paying way more attention to teacher psychology and what’s going to be likely on the test. How did the teacher teach or say stuff which ends up on exam vs which don’t ? Don’t forget to play psychological game !

1. Study before class 2. Ask questions to yourself and make succinct notes (1. How does this relate to past topics? 2. What will the test questions be like 3. What will the professor say next?) 3. Review topic the same day as lecture 4. Pretend you're a professor and explain the topics

@@lorenzomizushal3980no this isn’t enough to cover the video in the slightest … if you indeed stood how the brain worked at all you’d realize 30 seconds to the brain means nothing, as the creator literally spelled out at the beginning of the video (as someone who has studied Human learning) that the brain chooses to throw away knowledge , you need to spend minutes on a concept and sleep on it to grasp it when studying concepts you’ve already learned in class! Why would a minute short on all these concepts help you?! Like actually think about what you just typed ! I have no idea why people think they are helping others when providing terrible summaries….

1) What techniques do we use to study before class? Why do they work vs what I’ve done in the past? This is what makes it work for viewers by watching the whole video 2)what questions ? Why? What are we succincting our notes too? Why does it work for students ? 3) what main topics are we reviewing before the lecture ? Why do they work better than my ways? (The reason we are watching this video) 4)why does that work and what is an example ? No one can understand something they’ve never even seen happen This I why people with common sense watch the whole video , it is also why you are not doing a net good but a net NEGATIVE to those who are actually crazy enough to believe that they absorbed the information based off this comment!

1. preview materials before class to get the framework 2. Concise note taking 3. Ask questions during class i. how does this relate to my previous knowledge? ii. how will this be tested? iii. what teacher is going to say next? 4. Review at the same day by active recall

Germane cognitive loading seems to integrate really well with active recall and spaced repitition. I like to integrate and summarize information as I make my anki cards. Very effective! Though I’ve found it loses effectiveness in classes with high extraneous load (e.g. when profs don’t explain things well, when there’s extra textbook material not mentioned in lecture, when I skip lectures) so I’ll be taking the solutions you mentioned into account. Great clear video!

Honestly this was quite insightful as a student in high school right now (who is doing pretty well). I find that I already practice most of the "learning principals" you've talked about. I made the mistake of tuning out during a biochem lecture and thought I'd just figure it out from the powerpoint. The only problem was when I went through the powerpoint, the material about how to solve the problems were left out and neither were they in the textbook. I didn't know anyone in the class and I couldn't find anything about the material online and I failed the first exam. I had to withdraw from the class. It was a complex problem on dna cloning. I'm a chem major so I had very little knowledge of dna. I had to withdraw from the class and it was a huge setback. Thank you for making this video, I learned a lot from it!

I’m also getting a 4.0 GPA in university thanks to cognitive loading. I’m not the naturally gifted type. After finishing high school with a 2.7, I learned about learning for a year (before becoming a student again). I concluded that I needed to use my working memory effectively, be in flow state, and framework everything I learned. Then I saw this video which absolutely clarified how I can improve my process.. I graduated from college 40 years ago and I think a high GPA can help open the next door you’re trying to go through. But once you get your first job, nobody cares. It’s all about what you did at that job going forward.

Wow, that was actually a really cool video. As these videos are predominantly created by med students, most of the concepts they mention don’t apply to mathematics, or courses where the studying is more reasoning-based than knowledge-based (eg active recall and spaced repetition make no sense to use in maths. You can “memorize” all the fancy equations and proofs you want, and you’ll still fail the class). I (as a maths major) really appreciated you talking about concepts that apply in a wide range of disciplines, instead of just memory-based subjects.

Maximize germane cognitive load = maximized learning. Intrinsic = effort to learn material, Extrinsic = effort to learn due to bad formatting/accents etc, Germane = effort connecting new stuff to old stuff and even trying to predict what's coming next. Prep by viewing slides in advance helps with decreasing extrinsic load and intrinsic load during the lecture. This maximizes germane load ability during the lecture. Succinct notes = germane load bc to be succinct you need to understand and connect vs transcribe Review after cements info and decreases likelihood of forgetting due to spaced repetition and adding more germane load. (Personally once you have heard the whole lecture it's easier to decipher what info is key)

I think I can offer improvements on preview and germane questions. On preview I would add this idea. When previewing material come up with questions about any thing you didn't understand so that, in class, if those questions still aren't answered you can ask them when you have the live professor in front of you. On what is germane, I asked 2 entirely different questions which worked even better for me than the question you asked. 1. Is this the answer to any unanswered question that has been bothering me for years. (not just from my preview, but ever) 2. This new information or idea, how can I possibly use this in the future? What are the most general contexts in which this applies. 3. Ok, assuming I do understand this well, and in the most general way possible, what are the limits, the boundaries where this information doesn't apply. For the 2nd and 3rd question I attemp to visualize those situations. That 2nd and 3rd question also pre-primes my brain to recall this information when I might need it in the future. Especially since I was applying the mnemnist technique of future-linking. So when the future event occured it would already spring this information into view. And this future-linking worked so well that the 1st item happened almost automatically as did Dr. Chai's idea of seeing how it fits with what I already knew, since everything I already knew was future-linked to when I'd use it. I never, ever used the idea, "how would the professor test me on this?' as that seemed incredibly counter-productive to the big purpose of learning. I was far more interested in how life, beyond the classroom, would test me on this. So I never wanted to bound it into such a small space as my test score.

I think I can only implement a couple of these strategies because my lecture situation isn't ideal. For example, the professor for my most demanding class (complex analysis) doesn't post lecture notes or videos, and I take notes on regular paper. He also has a strong accent so I have to decipher his wording while trying to understand the concepts. It was still an inspiring video, but I don't think it can save my GPA lol

I'm trying with using "what if" to my concepts by saying what if this happened? and apply it to the knowledge and material. I first I tried used a random word generator, but then tried applying to past problems and situations from my experience. This works too well as it causes me to mentally burn up and I would need a break or have some water

The fact of the matter is that none of these strategies do particularly much in and of themselves: people who seek them out are a subpopulation of intelligent people, and the strategy offers a regimented system for studying. These means you have smart people getting organized, not a system that actually *does* anything in and of itself. If you are watching the video, you’re likely already intelligent enough-just get organized, however you like. If you know you’re not intelligent-you’ll also want to get organized, and probably will have to work harder and prepare more, but ultimately it’s still within your power. Nobody has hacked the brain here, and a trick won’t make your brain work better. Working better IS making your brain work better.

Time and time again with These Theories, I have come to realization, that trying to understand core ideas etc in one attempt, even with pre-work, is simply not possible! It is indeed too much Info, no matter what Topic... Only Thing you can do is try to integrate a coherent picture of what was done und said into your notes and when work with that afterwards... There are Limits to cognition. Not to mention repetitioned practice of exercise still needed, the brain is not a computer.!!

Then it’s not for you, but people that struggle with it. Not everything comes to everyone intuitively, some have to be intentional about it. The reason you're seeing more people watch these videos is because more people that are not good at it are tuning in to learn how to study better. Nothing has change, it just got more exposure

The intrinsic cognitive load example isn't really calculus vs biology. It depends on your skills and what you practice. I use chemistry and calculus often, but english is harder to pick up where i left off. Idk if you were giving an example, but if you're saying that calculus has a higher cognitive load for everyone, that's wrong and you probably just didn't do practice on things like calculus.
