Getting fired from a gig is never a good thing, but the story of how I lost a paying gig and the lessons I learned from that experience are something I've never talked about on my channel before. But when someone asked in this week's Tuesday Q&A I knew I had to share, also covered in this episode, how do patchbays work, my thoughts on Mateus Asato taking a break, is the CAGED system the best way to learn guitar, whats the difference between an SM57 and a Condenser microphone and much more. Personally I wouldn't keep them nameless. Letting other people know how a church is likely to respond to certain activities would be helpful to someone looking for a church home. And, If the church feels that what they did was so "right" they shouldn't have any problems with someone letting the whole world know just how "right" they are. Jesus turning water into wine should have been a pretty good clue as to how "right' their actions were. And there are also other verses in the Bible that would clearly show that their church policy is wrong.

@@jonathansinger3818 What they did was very, very stupid and clearly giving people 0 chances at "redemption" is the opposite of what churches are supposed to do. :) Why not simply ask him to delete it and not do that again? Geez. However, it sounds like the whole decision came down to two people at a very large church. Those two people likely have moved on or been fired themselves for behavior like this (turnover is high at churches, especially worship teams). I think not mentioning the church's name is a good move.

@@jonathansinger3818 while you're right, it's also asking for trouble each time one says anything remotely negative about a church, especially a mega one.. religious organizations, paradoxically, don't take criticism well. they are always 'right' as you've said... most of these suckers run their business like a mafia organization: power is carefully distributed thru the organization and intimidation is their favorite way to show the hierarchy. no, i'm not paranoid, i just know how it works. lots of churches do nice things for their community and not all of them run PR campaigns but all of them guard their 'image' like the mafia because that's where the money comes from. be safe everyone, have fun when possible

I am really sorry for the messed up stuff that went on with that church. I am a worship pastor, and that conversation would have no room in my team. There were hundreds of better ways to handle it, and they failed. Just felt like I should say that I am sorry for my brother's and sisters actions. Keep on rocking!

Same here, that should’ve been handled way different. It’s kind of embarrassing to think about some of the mistakes that end up being made in church leader ship. Firing someone on the spot via text message is already an incredibly cowardly behavior. But in a church, really? I would kinda understand if they overreacted and asked if he has any % problems and offered help, but not even that! Terrible. I'm fine with churches expecting some standard of public presence, but if it wasn't communicated, that's their problem.

I'm not sure about the labor laws in Georgia, and he may have been contract labor as well, but that sounds like textbook wrongful termination. Removed from a gig without warning, for a "violation" of a policy that he wasn't told about.

A week after my Father died of cancer I was fired from a touring band that I had been with for 7 years. The reason given was that a better player came available and they were going with him. I was completely thrown under the bus. It hurts me to this day how guys you trusted as friends could do such a thing. The only thing that gives me peace is that they broke up less than a year after firing me.

I feel you. To me that happened two years ago after 25 years in a band. My father died that time also but due to a heart attack. They just send me an SMS to tell me I‘m out. As a guy who plays in the worship team at my church, some churches can really suck. I never knew just how non toxic mine was until I started hearing stories about other ones in the area. It’s insane some of the things that churches freak out over, especially when the Bible makes clear that drinking is bad because drunkenness causes you to act in a way that doesn’t represent how God wants you to act, not because alcohol is bad itself. Being a drunk is bad, enjoying a glass of whiskey at dinner is not

Baptist churches are known for this. My wife and I both love great beers and enjoy in moderation whenever we find one we haven’t tried. We usually reserve this to our of town so as not to destroy our witness, just because of perceptions. Too bad. But it is what it is.

Don't think the drinking thing is the main issue here. Churches can have that standard if they want. The fact that they didn't inform Rhett of these standards up front and how they went about "firing" him are the bigger problems.

@@denismguitar1552 I have gone to a couple of Baptist churches in my time and neither of them were staunchly against drinking in moderation. We had a girl get fired from the worship team, not for drinking, not for drinking under-age, but regularly showing up to rehearsals/services hung over. They gave her time to get it together but ultimately did what they had to do. I think that's the proper way to approach drinking in a biblical manner.

I‘m always a worse human being when I drink, and have never become a better one after drinking a beer. I understand why people do it. I haven‘t drunk anything in at least a decade and I felt immediately better, it was probably the best thing I‘ve ever done.

Great video, Rhett! For the 15 year old I would add, "Don't turn up your nose at business classes in school." I did, and I had to learn everything from how to design a business card to how to do my taxes after I started working. Basic economics, supply and demand, employment law, how to do taxes, taxes consequences of various business decisions, how to operated a sole proprietorship business and a partnership, etc.

I'm a programmer, and at various points in my career I was expected to know sales, promotion, management, training, HR, giving talks, manning a booth at a trade show, etc. EVERYONE needs to know this stuff, even if you swear you would never need it. Every college should offer a streamlined business techniques class, but don't.

Having been through the many ups & downs of being a worship team member I can only say that 1) no church is EVER going to be perfect because we're ALL only human and the bigger a church gets the more corporate it behaves and things have a way of getting more complicated so I'm not surprised if they treated you as a hired hand instead of a church-family member. 2) If you know anything about spiritual matters the enemy of our souls will always try and cause division and confusion among God's followers, and especially with those who are committed to bringing God's people into a sanctified time of worship and devotion, so again not surprised. But I do hope you can learn and grow and deepen your trust in pursuing God's highest blessings beyond the temporary rewards and positions of this life...peace!

great explanation of the inner face...It's April now and my inner face is full of snot from all the pollen here! Great channel...CAGED is GOOD for people that are visual. I hope you understand what I mean. Some people are visual, they learn and relate to what they SEE in a VISUAL aid...i.e. the CAGED system. The great thing about it is if you are an auditory learner and you have some experience, the CAGED system can actually "fill in the blanks" for you. As I grow older I realize the giant gap between what you think you know and how much you really need to LEARN...and it's NEVER too late to learn, especially if there's no plan B

Great video. I’m no techie but when you explained the equipment and all the connections, I thought “the hip bone’s connected to the thigh bone, etc. etc. A friend was a rhythm guitar player in a band, his wife was the singer and really great, the lead player was the band leader. The leader fired the rhythm guy because he “wasn’t good enough” but wanted to keep the wife/singer. No dice. They were a package deal. I used to play “ folkie” stuff at Farmers’ Markets. For free because I didn’t need the money. One year the Market music organizer called to schedule me but told me I couldn’t sing “political” stuff because a vendor had complained. They lost the only musician who gave them free music.

To the 15-year-old guitar player: TRANSCRIBE. Transcribe, transcribe, transcibe. That doesn't even have to mean writing anything down, let alone writing it down in standard notation, it just means picking songs up by ear quickly and accurately -- the most useful skill any working musician can ever have, both for themselves and the people around them. Stop looking up the music/chords/tabs for things and work it yourself. Also: be at least tolerable to be around. Still working on that one myself.

You blow them out of the water with your skills AND your knowledge. That day may not ever come if you can't change up on the spot. There is such a slim chance to make it big. You need to be able to cast the widest net possible. Not only that but by knowing how read and write music will open up doors in learning you never even knew where there. However you are correct with the by ear thing too and working on that relentlessly. If you don't have an ear for it you will never get anyplace. Sorry about the "this is stupid" ... let me rephrase. This is narrowing your options.

Your experience as a worship musician was about the same as mine, except I had the audacity to get a divorce. The church had no tolerance for this; but having kids out of wedlock, drug/alcohol additions, and missing rehearsals/services were just fine. Never again...

That 57 is slaying that LDC in this particular instance! A lot of consoles have channel inputs that don't have the right impedence to let a 57 really shine. A 57 through a good transformer-coupled mic pre with selectable impedence sounds amazing on lots of sources.

Rhett agree with Luke M. Having worked in the church worship team arena most of my musical career I want to touch on the other aspect you mentioned. That is worship music (with the exception of black gospel which is more jazz complex) is generally very simple and you are stuck with one style of playing. Rarely do you get to explore and expand your playing in blues, rock, and other genres. As a worship player I have to discipline myself to practice other music forms to grow in my guitar playing.

Blown away by how little difference betwen the three different mics for voice over. Lately, I've been using the sm57 with a vocal preamp and a pop screen, and I really like how it sounds on my vocals
