If your grades in high school suck there is still hope for you. I almost didn't graduate. I basically just met the mark. I took time off and then went to community college in January instead of right away in September. By the time I finished there with my associates degree, I applied to and got accepted at every four year school I went for, apart from NYU. I wound up going to George Washington University - which may not be an Ivy, but its still a pretty damn good school. (Especially if you're studying political science or international relations.) Now I'm in graduate school at NYU so I've basically come full circle. Going to community college gave me confidence I had lost in high school and gave me the chance to really figure out what I wanted from school. Plus I saved a ton of money. There are a lot of paths to academic success. Be patient and work hard. You'll get there if you keep trying.

BLESS THIS VIDEO! i’m applying to some prestigious schools next fall, and your advice was super helpful. what you said about figuring out what you want from life and using college as a stepping stone to get there instead of college being the end goal was really insightful. most high schoolers, including me, spend WAY more energy thinking about getting into college than the future beyond the admissions process and i think having a big picture outlook is so helpful

I'm 26 and watching this out of random curiosity. I wish my parents or every adult around me at 17/18 said " don't think about what's going to get you the money or job security.". Or for so long I felt my sucesses or grades are what defined me or hid problems I did have; so when my life has gone to complete shit, all my internal baggage and current problems were literally killing me. I want to say this is now one of my favorite Michelle Khare videos, if I decided to create a list. I literally just cried just thinking "wow, here's an adult giving great advice to younger adults. I wish she was here on a screen in front of me 8 years ago".

Omg thank you so much for this video!!! I'm a junior in highschool rn and I'm starting to get into a lot of my college searches, and while it's all been very exciting, I'm really anxious too! I do pretty dang well in school, but my class is extremely competitive and I couldn't honestly see how someone with my scores/gpa would get accepted into the schools I wanted and still find a way to afford it because I constantly find myself comparing myself to them. I really enjoy my class as a whole, but they really stress me out sometimes! Anyway, what I was trying to say is that this has been super reassuring and amazing advice, so thank you! :)

Super wish I had this video available to me when I applied last year. I did the same thing: got the rgade and scores but my dream school didn't give me enough money to go and i was devastated that I had to go to a 'second rate' college. The status of the school is what mattered most to me and my school. After a semester of being unhappy where I was I've settled into my school and turns out the opportunities offered here better suit my interests and values. Also I love that you mentioned that not everything has to be perfect in college. I feel like there's way too much pressure for college to be the best time of your life.

Super like the video. This is still very helpful for post graduate in the Ivy League as well. Some of theses questions to resolve show up in the interview process for research jobs. I grateful to find someone else who has 'scatter brained' interests which are all united in actuality. I need to work on resolving that question further. I also need to return to my more bold, specific dreams of my undergrad and post grad applications. Vague is not helpful. If it is not good enough for Ivy League undergrad, it will not impress for post graduates. Thank you so much Michelle!

I was able to complete 2 years of school in 1 at CC while working 3 jobs and finally got accepted to the university I dreamed of going to. American college admissions are so weird...... not bad though. It seems more stressful and there are way more paperwork requirements... but it's also far more human than Canadian schools. Most schools here are almost entirely grades based. My program had an interview but it is not common (and you were offered an interview based largely on your grades). Not sure which I would prefer...

I can relate soooo much to the first few minutes of this video about writing your essay bc it seemed like all the “perfect” application essays online were short stories instead about the person them self if that makes sense lol. Long story short, I got accepted to Oberlin College using the same steps you did and I think this video is superrrrrr beneficial to viewers who will be applying to college!! Thank you for making this!!

I am so happy you made this video! I am at Yale right now, and I can totally relate to that feeling of diversity. I was very hesitant to go to Yale, because I really thought that I would not fit into the stereotypical rich, privileged, beyond intelligent student. Although I scored well on the SAT, enough to get in, I knew that I would be a small fish in a BIG pond. I was completely wrong. Although there are some, people come from ALL backgrounds. I really hope people aren’t deterred by the intimidating image of an “Ivy League” or top university. Good luck, future college students!

While I wish this'd come out when I was in high school, I can definitely vouch what you said was correct! I got into my dream school, in Washington DC, which was the #1 school in the world for my major (I'm a multi-language major specifying in Russian and German). However, it ended up not happening, as I chose to go to another school, which I got a full scholarship to (not my first choice by ANY means). I love it here now, and I couldn't imagine being anywhere else! I'm not at my number one choice, but I'm so happy and blessed to be where I am now!
