I obtained my IT degree along with a minor in communication thinking that I would easily land an IT out of college. Completed a few internships, had a network tech job in college, even studied and learned web dev and was a web dev for a company for a few months. Then the pandemic hit and I was unable to get back into the IT industry. Even with all my background experience, degrees, and studying extra on my own time I couldn't land a job to save my life. Fast forward, now im begining my journey once again and studying for my Net+ and Sec+ cert and am committing to it. Thank you very much for your insight, and shout out to prof Messer for being such a gem to all of us in working towards landing a nice job in the IT world.

Cybersecurity is tough but very rewarding. I’m almost finished with my certification in cybersecurity and I can’t wait for a new start in this career field. The rejection and blatant disregard from the jobs I apply for is not what I expected but I’m still trying to get through!

@@143mrqz Michigan State University. Through the EdX program. I’m pretty sure most colleges around the US have this and you don’t have to meet any prerequisites other than having a reliable computer and storage space.

A thing about this field is there is no roadmap, what works for someone does not necessarily work for you. So, keep learning, keep applying until you make it to where you deserve!

All i want is to be locked in a room in front of a computer screen delving into directories or investigating packets. I have a degree in cybersec and I practice on hack the box and a few other CTFs in the mean time. Im not amazing or anything but I could get paid 40k a year and do this stuff happily as long as I had opportunity to go up in the company

Hi, I wanted to learn and gain knowledge about the Cyber Security field so that I can put myself in a better position before graduating Uni. So any recommendations or directions to start learning as it's quite overwhelming with ton of information on the internet and I want to get an experienced person's thoughts about it. Hey there, great to see you're learning Python as that is an essential skillset to have. I would throw in SQL in the mix as that is relevant too. If you're getting a Cybersecurity degree, then it should be sufficient in forming your basic understanding and knowledge. The next step is to apply them in personal projects so you can solidify your learnings. Hope that helps!

All of this is true… this is why degree program should be questioned on if they actually provide labs to learn these tools hands on rather than just taking a test to past the course. In addition to that, entry level in cybersecurity is so mislabeled that even after this video, people may still be lost on what to do. Many have done projects but then employers ask for real world experience not projects. So the catch 22 happens all over again, I have projects, I have the degree, I have the certs, I have the referrals but still can’t be given a chance to prove my efforts.
