I understand. Sometimes when I quit a high paying job, the first thing people would ask me "damn why would you quit this high paying job? Look at all the money you making" but they don't realize that it's not all about the money. Maybe I quit because of terrible management or colleagues or toxic work culture or simply I just need a break. Once you have the experience, you can always have another great paying job. Realistically you quit because in the back of your mind you believe you can get another job that pays the same or more easily or fairly easily. If you felt you were at risk of giving up a job that you would never be able to make even half as much ever again, you would think long and hard. Good for you that you have a skill that you can be so airy fairy about giving up a high paying job, but understand most people don’t live that reality.

That's my goal as well in the future. After I gain enough experience, like 6+ years in the industry, I'd create a cybersecurity company that focuses on cloud security. Look at the founders of Fortinet. They were working in the industry for decades and then left and founded their own company and they're multi billionaires now.

Older engineering vet here. So glad to see you younger folks prioritizing yourselves heavily. It's going to be better for your mental health and pay in the long run. Now make the money. Save it aggressively. Then stop and invest in yourself by starting or buying a business. Whatever you do don't get caught in the corporate trap of increasing your standard of living to match your salary. You'll make it harder for yourself to get out and start your own. Build your standard up with your own business.

@storm14k

@@CrypticChaos-y6v DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT A FINANCIAL ADVISOR. Any business can fail and you can lose your money. That being said I know how older people always said this type of stuff when I was younger but never told you what or how so I will offer some info. it can depend on where you live but laundromats, vending machine routes and storage facilities tend to be some of the lower risk options out there. I'm working towards a small assisted living facility. Also for some reason in my area car washes are exploding. Like literally every block has a big automated carwash being built right now and I'm not sure why. One thing I had to realize though for myself that was holding me back was that the engineering super power is not about tech. It's about solving problems and you can do that in any arena. Solve the problem of making the numbers work for yourself. Where to put your business. Solve something in your area that is in need of a solution. Don't get caught up thinking you have to become the next SV or Austin startup. The solutions may have nothing to do with tech. Maybe get some of these staple businesses off the ground and then use that to bootstrap your own tech goals.
@CrypticChaos-y6v
@CrypticChaos-y6v Ай бұрын
@@storm14k it’s crazy you say that. I’ve been reading up on starting or buying businesses. Literally have been looking at laundromats. One I found in my area has vending machines, a wash and dry service, and offers dry cleaning. I just found a contact who is a VP at a private equity firm. I met him randomly at a birthday party. Before he got into private equity he owned a small supplement shop. My plan is to pick his brain on how PE firms evaluate what a small business is worth. Just to understand how much is a fair offer if I were to approach an owner and ask if I could buy their business. Right now I’m still in the learning phase but I realized owning your own business that has constant cash flow is where it’s at. Tech pays really well but yeah it’s good to have some sort of exit strategy. Thanks for being honest and I’m glad I’m not the only person thinking like this!

Same here! It's really easy for people to act like, "Oh, you make a lot of money, why would you ever leave? If I were you, I would love it and never leave!". I've heard it all, and the judgment never stops. I've declined jobs that pay 200k+. It's NEVER been about the money for me. I want to make an impact, and I've been running my own company for the past 2 years. I've barely been able to afford the bills at times, but we're growing 400% YoY, and I've never been happier! Some people will never understand, and sadly, it's usually people who don't have firsthand experience in similar situations.

hey definitely appreciated this video a year later.. once a job doesn't align with your goals, time to move on. hope things are going well on your end. I'm at a smaller company now. it was great as I got hands on experience on starting and managing a long term project and being team lead on it.. I left Accenture for my current job. the pay is better at my current job too... A lot of the larger companies, you have a ton of coasters and you cannot stand out with just work alone. You gotta pollitick, and while I don't mind as my previous career was International Relations before coming into Data Science. I kind of left IR because I got tired of being passed up cuz the other candidate was some Prime Minister's kid..

Please do not stay at a dead end job that doesnt provide you with a 401k or IRA plan with an employer matching contribution plan. I'm retired now but I stayed at my last firm far to long because of loyalty. And didnt get anything out of it but BS in the end. Secondly, for smaller firms it advisable to do quick searches yearly on your company's name and look for problems.
