HOW I GOT INTO UBC + MY STUDENT STATS
hello again!!
in the rush of pre-university application season, i thought i'd make this video to give you an idea about my grade 11 and 12 grades/extra curriculars/student stats! i couldn't find a video like this on youtube that was specific to UBC (or Canada) so i figured why not make one myself! i really wanted to try and capture my student life in one video but i can already tell you there will. be. many. more! i hope you find this helpful :)

Ummm Hey, if you want to get into UBC arts, your average needs to be 84-87 range, science around 90+, and engineering around 92+ with heavy emphasis on math and science courses. They do recognize more rigorous courses, but they’re not necessary. Try to keep in touch with your counsellor and choose out classes you know will do well in. Also, this is a bit early since you’re in grade 11, but if you’re intending to go to UBC Science or Engineering, make sure to take high school Calculus. The first year university fail rate (for Calculus) is extraordinary high for people who didn’t take calculus in high school. It will also affect your GPA in UBC and you might not be able to get into the program you want. As for your extracurriculars and personal profile, remember, it’s not what you do, but what you learned. You really need to emphasize leadership and life lessons learned. They literally tell you this on their website! Try your best to avoid stuff like “I played soccer for 2 years” because that is something that teaches you nothing. I talked about being a lifeguard (leadership based) and being a basketball referee (leadership based + taught me time management). Really just do what you enjoy. Focus on the quality of the extracurricular stuff over quantity. You need 5 in total, no more, and for one or two of them you have to write a 100-250 word paragraph response detailing it. So what I’d recommend is just like how I chose Lifeguarding and being a Basketball Referee, choose two things that taught you a common skill, in my case leadership... and that should work. For your 3 others, you only need to write 50 words, yes 50 words, describing them, so those could be fillers, like “I played soccer.” You don’t want to waste your time on those. Instead, focus on two main ones, because those are the ones that are most heavily weighed and I believe they admit you for. If you have any questions, I’m here. Good luck!

Hey Maddie. Thank you so much for this video. I am currently in grade 11. I have a 96% average so far (with no AP courses) but I don’t really have any extracurriculars. I have been dancing for over 14 years, played the piano for 2 year and joined my school newspaper club this year. For the past few months I have also been creating this website for a local youth sports team for my work experience class. In elementary school I had way more extracurricular, but I don’t think those really count. Another thing I should mention is that when I was in grade 8/9 I never really thought of university. My main goals in those years was to make friends, as I didn’t go to my catchment school and at the time I had a really hard time making new friends, but over the years I have gotten more comfortable. And then when I started thinking about university COVID-19 shut everything down, so even if I wanted to in grade 10 I couldn’t really do anything (I know I probably could have gotten a job or found some volunteer work, but I couldn’t risk getting COVID as my mom is immunocompromised). My dream is to go to UBC for Engineering. What do you think my chances of getting in are? Do you think I need to show extracurricular and/or more involvement in them?

Hi Esther! Of course - I am so glad to hear that you are enjoying the videos! There is no magic recipe when it comes to getting into UBC. There is no right or wrong way to get involved either. Commitment looks great - what you have been able to do with the skills you've learned, people you've met, and the knowledge you've gained from this club is what UBC cares about. It is not about how many clubs you are apart of. They just want to see that you're doing something worth doing. If you want to get involved in more activities, think of activities relevant to what you want to study! Hope that helps :)

Majoring in math is brave!! I barely survived my two calculus courses haha! I can't tell you how likely you are to get in because there are sooooooo many variables when it comes to admissions each year. The average changes, the number of students they accept changes, the number of people that apply changes... there is no magic formula for it. An 85% average and a strong personal profile is great! If you apply, you have a chance!

Hi Crystal! I mean, I can't guarantee that you'll get in but you have pretty good odds. Strong academics are very important. And extracurriculars are too... I guess it depends on how you frame it in your personal profile. Don't worry too much! Hope that helps!

Hi Ty! AP's don't show up on your transcript, but if you pass an AP exam (get a score of 4 or 5) they can count as university credit. I can't tell you exactly what will make you look best. What my school offered may be completely different than what yours does. Pick something you actually enjoy doing - that's my tips to you! Hope that helps :)

This video made me feel more confident about my chances of admission. I know I did a lot in both grade 11/12 but still stress myself out :) Have a 95% average in grade 11 and 98% in grade 12. Did 2 years of garden club, environment club, peer tutoring, volunteering for 3 different organization at the same time, rowing, rugby and basketball. And in my gap year I'll volunteer for the Canadian ski patrol. Took overall 5 languages, did all the sciences, dance and outdoor Education. For the AP classes, do they factor into your average that you mentioned - or are they separate? I uncertain if it make sense to take AP course and get a lower average or just the non-ap subjects instead and likely get a higher average.

Whatever grades are on your transcript, AP or not, they will be considered in your admission average. Taking AP courses is a great idea for many reasons, and hopefully the discrepancy between what you would get in a regular vs advanced class isn't too small. Taking AP does not necessarily give you an advantage in your application, but it certainly demonstrates your ability to challenge yourself (very great quality in a university applicant).

Hi! BCom is a little higher - more like the mid 90s. UBC doesn't look at your grade 10 grades so do your best in grades 11 and 12. This average does fluctuate a little bit each year depending on the applicants though.

Hi Amina! Thank you so much! There is absolutely no hurt in applying. If UBC is a school you would love to go to, apply and see what happens! I don't know what your situation is like but if attending UBC is an option, and you've always wanted to go... I don't see why you wouldn't :) Another thing to consider though is what you plan on studying... keep that in mind when making your decision! Getting a job isn't necessary. If you've shown commitment to other activities (which you clearly have) and have a well rounded experiences, you will be totally fine! Maddy A

If you intend to work near Saskatchewan, then you don’t need a UBC degree. The university there should suffice. After your first job or two, they don’t care about where you went since you’ve built work experience. But if you want to work perhaps internationally and venture out of Canada or into another province? Then UBC will most definitely be of much more use than UoS. Also, university experience is another big thing. I don’t know about UoS, but the campus life on UBCV is very bright, so that’s another reason to want to come here. Hello Chelsea! That's very exciting! UBC typically looks at your grade 11 and grade 12 grades. I am not sure if it is different for international students, but usually there is a way to have your grades/exam marks automatically sent. Definitely something you should look into! Hope that helps :)

Hi! Yes, UBC usually bumps up the average of Albertan applicants... let’s just say your standard of high school education makes BC’s look real sad haha. It’s usually a couple percent but I’m not sure how they decide. I would say you have a great chance!

Hi! Thank you so much! Yes - you do need to pay an application fee but in most cases its is not more than $80 CAD. Although I am not sure if it costs more for international students. Its different for every school but generally it's not too expensive. There will be an early admission period and you can apply at any time within that period.

Hello! I didn't dedicate the time to study for chemistry and english. I was really passionate about psychology and was far more motivated to study. The content that I was taught in class also didn't quite align with what the exam was testing (except for psychology) which made it even more challenging. Overall, I think it really came down to what was most important to me! Sure I could've worked harder, but I was more focused on doing well in the courses UBC cared about :) Hope that clears things up a bit!

Hi, I'm doing the British A-Levels at my school which are MUCH MUCH harder than AP subjects. Do you know if I can apply and get in with A-Level grades, considering we don't have % averages (or relatively lower averages because of the difficulty) and GPA. Hi! I have heard about the British A-Levels before although I don't know too much about them. I do know that UBC accepts certain A-levels. Check out this link and scroll down until you reach "British Patterened Education" as it details the acceptable A-levels and the grade you need: you.ubc.ca/applying-ubc/applied/first-year-credit/ This is a list of A-levels UBC does not offer credit for: you.ubc.ca/unacceptable-a-level-courses/ I personally do not know anyone who has exclusively been accepted based on their A-levels. I do not know many individuals who studied A-levels, but you are not the only one and UBC has seen many students like you before! I'd say if you are worried, email admissions and ask! They'll be able to help you more than I can :) Also, not sure if you have already seen this link but if you haven't, it will show the A-level requirements and non A-level requirements for whatever degree you plan on pursuing. This might be late but I am from the UK and applied with A-Levels. I got in solely off of my grades from A-levels and my predicted grades weren’t particularly high. I think because British schooling is a bit more rigorous than in north america (as in we learn content in a lot more detail), they take that into account. I think it’s impossible to get a 90+ average in the British schooling system lmao but trust me they know that. Don’t get too caught up in GPA and averages because admissions know that’s not how our grading scale is, and calculate our ability through other measures! Best of luck

hi! what are my chances of bsc at ubcv? i have a 92.4 core average in grade 11, and i currently have completed two courses in grade 12 (physics 12 and precalc 12) with an average of 96 for those two classes. i also have a 95 in ap calculus, but that was my term 2 mark, and i have it full year, so i’m sure it will change. i also have an okay personal profile. i’m only saying okay because i genuinely don’t know how good it is compared to what they’re looking for. one more thing - will ubc be looking at your interim semester 2 marks during your admission process? or will they just look at your final semester 1 grades when giving you a conditional offer? thanks :)

Hello! I can't tell you what the odds are. I don't know what the competitive average this year is - I know that's probably no exactly what you want to hear BUT you seem to have set yourself up with great academic standing. Science is fairly competitive but they also accept a lot of students each year. UBC only pays attention to the grades you apply with and the ones you finish with... I don't think they consider interim grades. Hope that helps a little bit!

That's a pretty impressive average! I'm not totally sure how admissions works if you're transferring from a university outside of Canada. I guess I would say as long as you meet the requirements for whichever faculty/program you are planning to apply to then you would most definitely have a chance! Hello Mary-Joy! It sure is! I am really enjoying the B+MM... honestly a lot more than my other science courses. I personally do not find it that challenging. The content itself (at least this year) is pretty general and comprehendible. In terms of course load, it was a bit much at first, but once you figure out how to balance everything it is all okay! I am also only taking 4 courses right now because I didn't want to overwhelm myself. Hope that helps! If you have any questions feel free to email me :)

Hi Laavni! I can't tell you exactly what your chances are. There are so many factors that influence admissions each year. I'd say you are cutting a little close with your grade 11 scores so do your best in grade 12. The great thing is that the personal profile and video essay give UBC a chance to see you beyond your grades, but even still, you need to be competitive.

Hi Maddy, I’m currently in the ending of my grade 11 year! My biggest question is: does it matter if my extracurriculars aren’t directly related to the program I want to go into (sciences)? I also don’t have AP classes available at my school, and I’m not sure if I should sign up for some online. I have been involved in the dance team at my school since grade 8 and I plan to coach next year for grade 12. I had also participated in band from 8-10. I’m passionate about dancing and performing arts and I’ve been putting in effort in leadership roles as well. Currently the average for my grade 11 year is around 91%, but I’m hoping to bump it up to at least 93% by the end of the year (in 1.5 months lol). My biggest worry is that I’m not doing any extracurriculars related to sciences! I’m planning to do all three gr12 sciences, pre-calc, and calculus all in senior year. UBC’s my number one dream school and I want to do my best to get in, but at the same time I don’t want to over-fill my plate!

Hi Kelly! Your extracurriculars do not need to directly relate to what you are pursuing... mine didn't. In fact all of my extracurriculars had to with music, sports, theatre, and business. As long as you can make connections between what you've learned and how you're going to apply what you've learned to your studies then you're good to go. Don't overwhelm yourself too much :) It sounds like you have a really good sense of direction and how you're going set yourself up for success! I hope that helps clear some things up for you?

how did you manage to balance everything from high academics to several extracurriculars without getting stressed or burning out? also, what program did you choose because I want to do a program in science but I feel discouraged because of how everyone's saying how competitive it is.

I did get stressed out... more often than I wanted to be. But such a huge part of why I was able to manage it all was because the things I spent time doing, the clubs I was a part of, etc, were all things I really enjoyed. So as much as it all overwhelmed me sometimes, that was offset by how passionate I was about them. The other thing too is that for me, I cope with stress by keeping myself busy... it sounds really weird but for me it works haha! Everyone gets tired, has their "bad days"... its a part of the journey and figuring out how this all works! I transferred out of the faculty of science into Land and Food Systems. It had nothing to do with competition because I quite frankly didn't feel that it was all that competitive... to be fair, I don't really care about out-competing people. There is competition, but I don't really feed into it. I'm there to work at my pace and study what I love. That's why I transferred into LFS. Don't be discouraged. You have the same opportunity to study what you want as anyone else on in that program. There are some programs with limited seats, but there are many opportunities to get into it if it is what you really want!

Babar Masood UBC is one of the top schools in Canada for Sciences... not sure if that’s changed recently but overall a very amazing program!! I don’t remember there being any specific provincial requirements, but you would apply as a domestic, but out of province student. Check out the UBC website for those specific requirements!

Hey Maddy, I'm in IB and recently moved to this curriculum a year ago. My 10th grades are average but I wasn't doing IB then. I'm in my senior year now (grade 12) and I want to apply to UBC for history, or English (primarily arts) but my math and french grades are not the best. I got a 3 out of 7 in both, but my HL subjects are not as bad, and I have been a 5-6/7 student in all. I have done a lot of extracurricular activities, but I was concerned that my math and french grades might drag my result down as I haven't been the best at these subjects. Do you think I still have a chance at getting into UBC with average grades in my 2 of my SL subjects?

Hi! If you apply to UBC, you have a chance. I'm not sure if it is the same for IB as it is for regular curricula, but usually they take your top 6 courses (of what the required courses for your program) I think... and thats what is used to calculate your average. Hi! It could come across as repetitive if you don't create a bit of a storyline. You can totally mention both because those are two amazing experiences. If there is connection between the two projects/clubs, you can use that to your advantage! If you choose to only use one of those experiences, choose what is most meaningful to you and will give you lots to talk about!

Hello! That is amazing to hear! UBC is a wonderful place to study. I don't have much knowledge when it comes to Masters or PhD applications... I haven't quite made it that far in my academic career just yet. If you are eligible to apply, that is the first step. I'd say from there it would be important to make sure that you have a competitive average, as UBC is a very competitive school especially when it comes to its graduate and doctorate degrees. If you plan to spend a year doing something, and then write about it in your personal profile, make sure you actually love it and that it is relevant to what you want to do. Hi Maddy, I really should have found this video earlier🥲 I am currently in grade 12, and have already applied to UBCV Science. My grade 11 academic average was 97%, but considering the art classes I took (which I am terrible at) my average is 96%. Last year COVID was striking everything and I pretty much had to quit every extracurricular I had, and starting fresh in grade 12. I also wasn't a fan of "politics" where people run for presidents and all, so I don't really have anything to talk about for in-school activities (except for STEM clubs where I rarely show up maybe once per two weeks). Therefore, I don't have a very consistent activity like you mentioned. My grade 12 average is 95%, including 4 interims and 2 finals. (I have finished Mandarin 12 and Pre-calc 12, getting 98 and 99, and I am currently on Phys Bio Chem and Eng 12) I'm quite worried about my extracurriculars since I either quitted or just started recently. However, I did manage to tell some inspiring stories during the time I was there. Do you think I still have a chance of getting in early admission? I'm somewhat confident of my grades since I know it's gonna go up as my science teachers omit our optional labs, but I am super stressed about my extracurriculars since none of them are very consistent.

Hi Alex! While UBC does look at your grade 11 grades, I think they value your grade 12 ones a little more given that they are more recent and reflective of current abilities. A strong personal profile always helps and high average too. Do your best in grade 12 to maintain high academic standing and you will be okay! UBC science is very competitive - I'm sure you know that. But aside from grades, they do look at what you do outside of school. Think about what else you might be able to bring to the table :)

You still have time to get involved in your community! UBC wants to see commitment to something other than your academics. Of course, they want to see you can get good grades, but they care about what you've learned from your other experiences as well! It is a relatively significant part of your personal profile, not specifically volunteering or working, but the experiences you typically gain from commitments like that.

I wanted to ask how much do Grade 11 marks matter? As, I didn't particularly good in Grade 11, I only took 5 University courses and got an 80% average in those 5. Though, in Grade 12 now, I have a 92% average based on the three courses I have taken till yet and I have loads of extra-curriculars. Do you think I would have a chance of getting in? Hi! There are specific grade 11 ad 12 courses that they look at, and to my knowledge, they are considered to be of equal importance. I think they only use the courses that are required by your faculty of interest to determine your admissions average. I am not 100% sure though. I can't tell you what your exact chances are but if you apply thats definitely a step in the right direction haha. With Fine Arts, so much depends on your portfolio, but overall, I think you're on the right track so don't worry to much! I don't know how they weigh everything so I don't think I can help you there. It;s safe to assume that it is all very important. They ask for it for a reason!

Hello! An average of 92% is well above the required average to be considered for the Faculty of Engineering (85%) and most definitely something to be proud of! Keep in mind, she will enter the Faculty of Engineering and then specialize in 2nd year. There are so many things that contribute to a successful admission to UBC, and a lot of it has to do with how you connect it all and deliver it in your personal profile. I don't have the perfect answer. I don't want your daughter to compare herself but for a baseline, I have a couple friends in Engineering currently and as grade 12 students, they both took AP courses, but one had a 97%, few extracurriculars and no community involvement, while the other had a 95% average, worked part time and was heavily involved in their community. She needs to believe that her hard work is enough. There is always that feeling of doubt, but she can not let her doubt control the way she thinks. I hope that helps! Thank you Brenda! I'm glad you found it helpful! From my own personal experiences, where you go to high school isn't of particular importance. I went to a public high school. I know just as many people who attended public high schools as I do private high schools here at UBC. Keep in mind I had a 94% average, lots of extracurriculars, and what I think was a pretty good personal profile. The prestige of your school means very little, if not nothing to UBC, so don't worry. Strong grades and a strong personal profile are all you need! Hope that clears some things up for you!

I’m in grade 10 going to grade 11 in September and I’m planning to go to UBC arts faculty but I don’t know what program yet. I am a very good student with a 91% average with a variety of good extracurriculars, but I am bad at math. I took foundations and precalc 10, but my teacher recommended me to do foundations 11 instead of precalc 11. It says in UBC that I only need either foundations 12 or precalc 11 for admission requirement. Can I still get into UBC if I take foundations 11 and 12 instead of precalc 11? Also, my school doesn’t offer AP classes sooo... I’m kinda sad I suck at math. I don’t know why I suck at math. My parents even took me to Kumon and I didn’t really improve. Now I think my life is over because my teacher recommended me to take foundations. :((

If UBC says they accept it for the program you are interested in, then it shouldn't be an issue if you take Foundations 11 and 12. Double check though with the program you intend on studying. Your life is not over... not even close haha! Math is not the be all end all of your existence! It might seem like a big deal but trust me, there are bigger things to be worried about. You will be just fine taking foundations - just make sure that it is accepted by the program you want to pursue :) Good luck to you!

Hi! UBC looks at your academic average. Depending on what schooling system you follow will play into how they assess you/how things convert to the percentage system. Hello! Commerce is a fairly competitive program at UBC, with the admissions average hovering around 93% or so. I did not receive any scholarships from UBC... UBC Scholarships are, not always, but usually awarded to students with averages above 97% (that number is based off my friends' averages who got scholarships from UBC - they all had about 98%). I'm sure there are many scholarships beyond UBC that would consider your extracurricular and academics. I hope that helps :)

If she is interested in pursuing a bachelors of Arts in Psychology she can and in her third year she would then begin to specialize. Hi Ben! International fees are very high... all I can recommend is applying for as many scholarships as you can. There are also lots of bursaries available too. There’s lots to consider when making a decision about going to school away from home. The cost of flights, living, schooling, etc. It can be a lot! Good luck!

Hello!! I would say so... Arts isn't as competitive as other programs nor does it require reallllly high grades. High grades are helpful there's no question, but it isn't the be all end all for your application if you have "lower" grades. I can't guarantee anything but you most definitely have a chance! Hi! Everyone has a chance. It is just a matter of how strong that chance is. Psych is a pretty competitive program so I would recommend doing your best to attain the best average you can in grade 12. UBC isn't concerned with what you do as much as they are with what you learned from your experiences. Does that kind of answer your question?

My dad works at my school and he has told me everything counts since you are in 9th grade in order to apply for a scholarship, and to college in general. (I wold be applying as an international student since I live in Honduras) I love my dad and all but he puts a lot of pressure which makes me stress a lot. The thing is I am nervous about entering high school. Not because of the people but more because of grades and other things that would help me to get into UBC. My point is do you have any tips to maintain good grades while being a part of various things. (MUN for the last three years and want to continue to do it for as long as I can, soccer, GIN, and a few other clubs) I am also known as a big procrastinator and sometimes have trouble paying attention. I am sorry for this very long message I just wanted to know if there are any tips you could give me and a few pointers. Thanks so much for reading this! By the way I won't only be applying to UBC but schools around Canada and Europe mostly, also some in the US but I really want to know a lot about UBC because that is definitely my first choice of school and dream school. I did watch your tips videos, but I want to know more if you have more tips, especially since you actually are in UBC and have already spent a year there. Hi! UBC Science is a fairly competitive faculty. Usually, the admissions average hovers around 94-96% but it very much depends on the year. Keep in mind it's not all about the grades! Grades are important but your personal profile is on par with your grades. Hope that helps! Maddy A

Hi Adia! Psychology was its own course. It was not a part of any specific department, it was its own elective. At my school, we had 5 required courses and then you could take up to 3 electives that counted as credits towards graduation. So even though psychology wasn't a required course, it still counted towards my graduation because it fulfilled the credits I needed. Hope that helps! Hi Emma! UBC doesn't actively consider your junior year grades. They only consider grade 11 and 12 in determining your admissions average. If you apply to UBC, you have a chance. Depending on what faculty you apply to, those chances might be higher or lower, but it really depends from year to year on so many different things. Each year, the admission average changes, the competition for a certain program changes, how many people who might apply will go up or down... so many variables to consider! Remember, your personal profile is almost just as important as your grades, so give yourself plenty of time to work on that!

Hello Nardin! From what I understand, 6.5 is the minimum grade required by UBC on the IELTS to be considered for admission. Ensuring that all your other grades are as high as they can be would be very helpful, as well as writing a really great personal profile. You can most definitely apply, and you should!! Depending on what faculty you are interested, it may be challenging. Best of luck with your application!

Hi Juhn! Thank you haha - its been an awesome journey this past year and a half! UBC was close to home and I was specifically interested in the Integrated Science major when I applied. I applied to the Faculty of Science so you don't apply directly into a specific program, rather just general sciences. You declare your major at the end of your first year.

Hello Sonia! Science and Arts are very different. If Science is what you enjoy most, then maybe consider faculties that are similar to science. If you are passionate about Arts, that should be your first choice. It is completely up to you! It is your education :) Hope that helps!

Hi! You don't need straight A's but a competitive average is very important. It depends on what faculty you are interested in. Keep in mind your personal profile is a VERY big part of your application and often, gives students with a slightly lower average an opportunity to share their other strengths!

I am planning on filming an application/personal profile tips video - that one is coming soon!! uni just kinda knocked me off my feet BIG time (more vids to come about that too) so I’ve fallen way behind OOPS I haven’t declared my specialization (which is basically a major) yet, that happens at the end of first year. You have to apply to it, and depending on whether it’s competitive or not, you may or may not get in. All I can tell you for your personal profile is BE TRUE TO YOURSELF but add a touch of formality. So Im contradicting myself a little bit but proper grammar, no slang, etc. Generally essay style is the way most people go but the responses are fairly short so there isn’t really the room for a full essay. I’d say there’s no reason not to get creative, unless that means you’re not able to effectively answer the questions. Hope that helps! Once the video is up you should definitely check it out! They continually pass on information about research, volunteer, or job opportunities! Not all profs do this but the most passionate ones do!

Hi Rachel! From what I’ve heard it is a really competitive program to get into. There is no specific minimum LSAT score or GPA but the higher your scores the better your chances. Averages range from about 76% to 90% and LSAT scores from 156 to 180, but the personal profile/statement is weighted equally to your grades. For me, I come from a really strict and reputable high school so my average is slightly lower (92%ish) than other ubc students who got accepted to engineering. Our school actually prepares you for university. For ex, calculus 12 class we go over some of the calc 2 units, which I believe is going to help me a lot later. For english class, teachers push you very hard to get used to writing a lot. Also, we had been achieving the highest averages on provincial exams in the past. My counsellor also told me unis regard our school highly. Even one of my friends who are at mid 80s got accepted at sfu beedie which is really hard to get into like ubc sauder. Guys if your average is low, dont worry cuz your school might be a reputable, rigorous school. Ask your counsellor how your school is perceived by unis. Question. I heard that I would be taking 6 or 7 courses per semester in first year engineering. Can I cut the courseload down in first year? 6 or 7 is too much for a freshman I think. Thanks in advance

Hi there! Learning calculus in high school will DEFINITELY help you later on! 6 or 7 courses is standard for engineers. Having prior knowledge about one of the topics will for sure ease the load a little. Of the engineers I knew, it was required that they take all the courses listed in their first year. I am not sure if exceptions are made, as engineering is very intense and a demanding faculty. 6 or 7 courses is a lot of courses to be taking in one term, but the expectation is that, if you are at UBC for engineering, you are taking the full course load. Going to a high school that does a great job of preparing you for university benefits you. UBC does not actively consider what you school you go to in your application. They strictly look at your grades and your personal profile. In general, please be careful in thinking that because you went to a highly regarded high school that UBC will disregard a low average because you went to that school. It's important to work hard wherever you are and make the most of the education and opportunity you have! Thank you for bringing this up!

Also some schools are very rigorous and only a small percentage of their students can get past 95% for example or be around that. I think it does matter. Or at least it should.

I don't know the small details and considerations UBC makes when admitting students to their school. You're right though! Some schools are very rigorous and demanding of their students. While this varies from school to school, UBC can't choose students based on what school they went to. Let's just say if that was the case I most definitely would not have gotten in. I'm sure you can imagine how many issues that would cause :(

I'm confused about something though. Their website says they send the acceptance letters in May but isnt that when school is supposed to start? @@mvp5332 Best of luck to you as a transfer student! UBC runs two winter terms and two summer terms. It is most common for students to begin in September, complete their first winter term, then begin their second term in January and end in April. So the main school term(s) doesn't begin in May. You would be accepted in and around May, have most of the summer to figure out housing, and you begin attending UBC in the fall of that year.
