syddyvideos hi!! I had a 3.6 GPA, I took All AP courses, and I was the commissioner of community service at my high school, and I had over 200 hours of community service at an elderly home, my church, boys and girls club, my local schools etc. but I also was accepted as a college transfer, so my HS involvement didn't as heavily impact my admission decision as a freshman! Hope that helps!

ɐʎuǝ I was totally in the same position you were. I liked film, but I wasn't sure if it was a career path worth pursuing given how competitive the field is and how hard it is for people like myself to get in, however, my advice would be if you actively participate in film and do it as a hobby now and you enjoy it, chances are you'll enjoy it in film school. It's great being around likeminded peers who vary in experience too. USC does offer financial aid and scholarships for financial aid, but I would suggest applying to outside sources, as well because priority over scholarships goes to graduates in film production. Hope that helps!

Also if someone were to be going into film school for specifically video editing and not film making, do you still need to create a short film for your application? What degree or major would you reccomend pursuing for film editing and what division would you reccomend applying to if I did not want to go into production or directing a film?

Julia bellefontaine Film production includes film editing. Film production at USC introduces you to mainly directing, screenwriting, producing, cinematography, editing, sound design, but there are many other fields. The program is very well rounded; you learn a little of everything even if you only have the intention of doing one thing. Many people in the film production program only want to be one thing and some are figuring it out, as they go. I’d suggest you go for a BA or BFA in film and TV Production because that seems the best suited for you, and you can eventually take more film editing classes specifically throughout your time at USC.

Quick question-did you go to another college before applying to the USC film school? and if so for how many years? I would love to go to film school there, but I live in Chicago and the tuition for out of state is crazy there in California. I have a huge passion for film editing in particular, and the whole idea of manipulating clips as a creative outlet. I am a senior in high school this year, so I’m still unsure of where I want to go. Unless I get a shcolarship, I know I wouldn’t even be able to pay for USC until at least 2 years into another college. Do you have any advice for someone like me who lives out of state but would consider transffering from another college? Thanks!

Julia bellefontaine yes! I went to two different schools before USC, one year each. The good and bad thing about USC is that tuition is the same no matter where you’re from, but it’s also very expensive. What’s also good about USC is that they accept students as early as Sophomore year. USC is great for film editing! There are not a lot of people that want to be film editors in the program that I know of, so you’d be filling a much needed field of expertise! As far as affording to go, USC’s financial aid is very extensive. There is an option on the application if you’d like to be considered for SCA specific scholarships. Besides that, I’d suggest writing to USC about your situation, if you are admitted and, of course, apply to scholarships outside of USC like online or locally.

mattchu_chow For usc, at least, we were in the computer labs for all our projects. As long as the computer can download apps or has a basic editing software, that’ll work fine. A film school should have the technology you need already. I, personally, had a macbook pro more-so for other classes. For small projects, I used Final Cut Pro because I already had it and google drive and Final Draft because I tended to use those frequently.

mattchu_chow Definitely! I also edit on Adobe Premiere. It’s really a personal preference. Adobe Premiere has more you can do with it, and it has a student discount. I already had Final Cut, and I prefer the simplicity of it. It did what I needed for my small class projects. Any larger projects, I did in the computer lab.

Sage Park no that program is for graduates. I’m an undergrad, so I just applied to the regular film and television production program. The only difference is I am set to graduate in two years instead of four years of the program. And yes the Peter stark program does.

Hi! I’m a rising senior and am considering applying for film at USC. I make videos with my friend, and she always holds the camera and I act, however I come up with shot ideas, the plot, script, etc. In submitting a video for USC, do i need to be the person behind the camera even if the concept of the video is my own?

Aditi S Hi! And no. For my video, I did everything, including acting. However, there are a lot of people that only desire to be behind the camera, so most submissions the director does not act, and it showcases your directing skills. But I’m an example that that it isn’t the only way to make a film. Do what you think will make a better film.

hi! this comment might be super duper late but it's so great to see somebody who got into SCA from a UC! I'm trying to transfer from Berkeley but I feel totally hopeless about it :( since admissions officers tend to look at community college apps more, do you have any advice for how to really spice up an application coming from a UC?

harmonica I feel like USC tends to look at everyone with a clean slate, despite where you come from. But I used my experience from UC Davis in my short film submission. I think the best way you can spice up an application is to be transparent. Don’t cover up the fact that you went to a UC, explain how going to UC Berkeley has impacted you (good and bad) and why you want to transfer. It’s nice to see another UC student applying to SCA. Hopefully, I’ll see you around!

The application process is a holistic examination. So, your creative examples, film submission, and script all come into mind, as well. You can always transfer, as well, and work on your grades in college. Schools will always look at your most recent grades first.

The amounts of money people have to pay for Uni in the US makes me feel sick to the stomach...for that amount of money you could just shoot two small scale movies(or over a dozen short movies) that you could use as a way to promote yourself to clients/festivals/other filmmakers...because in the end,major in film is really kinda worthless on it’s own unless you have somewhere to go to right after you finish the school...

Hahaha I have no idea why classes start so late. When you find out, let me know lol. I transferred as a junior so Inonly took upper level sca classes, but I’ve heard from my peers that CTPR 290 was a lower level sca class that was taken.

@@vedant3030 shishh man, it's not about major tho. Genius Directors like Christopher Nolan and Tarantino haven't studies at Film Making school but still we see their magic every 2 to 3 years. I have seen some of the USC students who have studied filmmaking. Their short film quality is still trash to the point where I believe that even I(a 17 years old Afghan)can make a better movie with my own Galaxy J7 pro phone😂😂. Never lose hope mate

The criteria is to be able to tell a story. It costs around $70,000 dollars, but chances are you'll get financial aid, and there is scholarships from SCA.

Great question! There is no minimum amount of credits but it's best to have more than 30 semester or 45 quarter units to transfer, so they don't focus only on your work from high school.

Tuition is high but that tuition doesn’t change depending on whether you’re in state or out of state. And for international students, the tuition price is the same, but International students do not get US government aid. I could elaborate more in a video. Also, I don’t think your nationality status affects your likelihood of getting in or not getting in.

Undergraduate film school is for the naive beginner who will feel foolish after graduation 4 years later and after lots lots money is given to the university, when they’re making wedding videos and online infomercials to pay the bills.

What a waste of a ton of money. Do you really need to go to usc to make movies? Films are made by self managed self driven artists who don’t wait to be told what to do. Better to major in a business related or finance related professional program, and, produce your own films all the time. If you need to go to undergrad university to learn how to make films then when you graduate you'll either be an assistant making photocopies getting coffee, or you'll be making wedding videos, or you'll go back to university to become a school teacher.

No, but it's not necessarily the education itself that's important to many of us (trying to shoot a feature with little money and NO connections (as in, none of your friends want to help out) is a colossal pain in the ass!).
