Congratulations on your career this far Alfie, it is inspiring to watch. Man I would've loved to stay in the industry but unfortunately it is just too rocky at the moment, to the point where keeping and landing a gig at times seems impossible. I have switched careers into one that is a lot more lucrative and stable, however, VFX will always be what I am most passionate about, but the instability of it is just unbearable at times :((
@jamminjosh13Ай бұрын
I definitely agree with you man. I loved working in Montreal, i was able to move away right after college and be on my own, but the strike happened and the industry was already feeling a lack of work cause of that year of covid hitting everyone. I am curious what career you were able to switch into, if you don't mind me asking? I've not really found something other than small media creation/video editing gigs, but nothing that pays hardly anything.
@AlfieVaughanАй бұрын
Thank you! I'm sorry to hear you had to make a switch but glad that you're stable and hopefully happy in what you're doing now :)
@AceSfxАй бұрын
@@jamminjosh13 Totally! The industry hadn't really recovered fully from Covid then the strikes felt like final nail in the coffin. I was lucky I had completed a Construction Management course prior to my VFX career, so I am working in that field right now here in Australia...It was a totally opposite career change haha!

Hey Alfie, thanks for sharing your story. I'm also a compositor and have prior experience working remotely for a studio, but I wanted to know your opinion about moving to the UK for work, I know its kind of tricky due to inmigration restrictions, but yeah just wanted to know what you think. Also, the industry is still recovering from what happened last year, so it makes it even more trickier 😅. I'm in Spain. Cheers!
@AlfieVaughanАй бұрын
I think it depends if you want to work in film or commercials. Some of my friends in film have been out of a job/ trying to get their first job for years. But a lot of artists I know that are good and have worked at good studios in commercials are hopping around all over the place doing really well and getting loads of work. It all depends on your experience and the companies you want to be at I think. Generally I think London is doing better than America at the moment for work availability

I'm a davinci user. Should I learn fusion or nuke. Will I miss out something? i dont wanna work in the industry but wanna have the best result. what's bothering me is the workflow as i might have to switch between both softwares to do minor things. or should i learn both? moeny is not a problem?
@AlfieVaughan7 күн бұрын
Personally I'd recommend nuke if money isn't an issue. But if you're not working at a level where you intend to get into the industry then maybe nuke isn't necessary. It's only really worth it if you're doing the more complicated stuff. For smaller shots at a consumer level fusion is totally fine and at that level it's more about the artist

What would you do if you weren't in the right place I'm currently working for a company and have been stuck in roto and cleanup for 9 months I'm fighting for opportunities in compositing and I'm getting some but they're few. What's your advice?
@AlfieVaughanАй бұрын
I think I was in the right place at the right time eventually but leading up to that I was just proactively applying for things, constantly working on personal projects to improve my skills etc. I think the best thing I can advise to do is just make as much work as you can so you improve quickly. And once you get good people will want to hire you when you apply so it will be less of a battle to get their attention like when you're new / a junior

do you suggest to switch from blender to maya if I have the time and money for that? Will I get something more out of this?
@AlfieVaughan3 күн бұрын
There's not really any need to switch unless you want to work at a VFX studio. That's the only time id say it's worth it almost all studios use Maya and Houdini for all their CG
@zczjj2 күн бұрын
@@AlfieVaughan but people say Maya is better. That's why I was skeptical
@AlfieVaughanКүн бұрын
They're very similar. The advantage Maya has is that it's already used at a lot of studios and they're not likely to switch to blender

I'll have a think. Blender doesn't have a tool for it so it's more manual. Jacob showed it well in that video. I do it in nuke normally with the proper colour chart tool
