This helped me so much! So I've been in the process or doing some deeper level upkeep and maintenance on my Toro Proline 37" commercial walk-behind. This mower is old, but apparently, you just can't kill it. I've used it to death, and she just keeps on going. The transmission on this Toro is a Peerless - Tecumseh, same as yours. I've noticed brown nasty oil leaking from both sides of the drive axles that go from the transmission to the wheels on either side. I approached the local Toro Stealership about servicing the transmission and asked about any gaskets, seals, grease/oil, etc. that I may need. They quickly informed me that it is a lifetime "sealed" system and that if it was leaking, it could only be replaced. A new one is $1,000 plus $500 for them to install it. I searched online and even used ones are $650+. So I did what any self respecting "farm kid", who grew up around a father, uncles, and a grandfather that turned wrenches and figured out how to keep their farm's equipment running, would do. I looked up a few KZbin videos about it (yours) and then proceeded to tear the transmission apart. The inside was disgusting. I've owned it for 20 years of it's 30 year life. I can only assume it was the factory grease in the transmission because I've never opened it up, until now. That means the grease was 30 years old this year! It was a milk chocolate / brown pudding color and it stunk. It was far thinner than it should be, so I assume there was water mixed into it as well, and that is why it was seeping out of the sides of drive axles. I spent the next hour getting all the nastiness cleaned out of the transmission gear case. Then, I packed the transmission gearbox about half full of high temperature red wheel bearing grease. Finally, I sealed it all back up, and then I started it up. The transmission shifts and pulls as it should, and it is smoother than ever. The leaking drive axles no longer leak because the new grease isn't the same disgustingly thin rancid soup that had brewed in the transmission over the last 30 years of use. So, $1,500 for a Stealership repair OR it is $7.99 for some new grease and 2 hours of my time. $7.99 for the win this time!

That chain would probably wear out before those gears. Look how long gears in a transmission and in differentials last, basically forever with proper lubrication, unless they are overstressed by an engine upgrade. Farmers were having problems with their variable speed engine fan drives wearing out prematurely on their John Deere tractors. Turns out that the farmers were pumping normal grease into the drives, instead of the high temperature synthetic grease John Deere sells for use in their tractors. Normal grease couldn't take the heat and pressure from the variable speed belt drive. And the heavy steel belt drives were not dynamically balanced. The new ones are, and are sealed, with the proper grease inside. No need to grease them.

maybe thats why the input shaft bronze bushing wore, allowing the grease to ooze on top of the trans pulley

Hi! What could be wrong with the Peerles 700 5 speed When the machine is running, it doesn't go overboard and shake the gear stick What could be wrong and where can I get parts ordered in Finland?

search on amazon for your model number, may be best to get a new one, think this one was around $200.
