Thanks for this FB! Two years ago I launched a channel that was something nobody else was doing (not this account). I took 3 months off of work to pursue it, I made 5+ videos per week with fairly high production value (it wasn't vlog style - I had broll, graphics, everything) but I couldn't get to that 100 subs. It was extremely disheartening considering how much I poured into it. But videos like this give me hope that the next idea can come thru if I focus on quality over quantity.

I'm thinking I'm a "ride or die" based on quickly I saw and clicked on this video :) I have a couple ideas for your Foolish Baseball channel. A couple MLB players from the 50s I have been digging into lately: 1) Minnie Miñoso - borderline HOF'r, had at bats in 5 decades in MLB and former Negro League player. 2) Luke Easter - also former Negro League player, people compare his story to the Natural and I have never seen anything presenting him well on KZbin. I'm not certain these would fit your criteria, but I think you could do an excellent job with this, and I personal think the subjects are super interesting. Whatever you decide, I'll be watching either way. Best!

Hi I know I'm a week late but I have a question, viewer retention rate, does that mean keeping people around to the very last second? A lot of KZbinrs I watch have long outro cards that pretty much always make me click away.
@FoolishBailey3 жыл бұрын
I have this same problem as well (25-30 second credit sequence at the end). If you can end the video sooner, I'd say go for it. People do tend to click off those early, but if they watch 90-95% of the video it's still a win. This becomes even harder to balance once you get sponsorships. People will skip through those or exit early, so those videos will naturally have worse retention overall.

appreciate the video man, baseball bits was what really made me want to make youtube videos so your input means a lot. you mentioned how when you started making OOTP videos you posted them to the subreddit, which I have a specific question about; reddit has strangely always had users that are very anti self promotion, and I find that sometimes when I post my stuff it gets a pretty negative reaction because of this. was there a specific way you worked through this, or did you just not really care?
@FoolishBailey3 жыл бұрын
You're definitely right about them hating self-promo. I just think OOTP community was really receptive to the help. The takeaway might be that you'll have better luck on niche subreddits, especially if they're content-starved.
@PTBNL3 жыл бұрын
yeah, fair enough. one last question, do you ever have an idea for a video you're really excited about that you know in the back of your head is gonna get way less views than average? You mentioned that sometimes you pick videos to make out of your backlog just based on how good of a title/thumbnail they'll be, so are you looking more for the numbers they'll pull or how excited you are about the topic? Appreciate the responses man

As fans, I think we don't always appreciate the intricacies and politics that happen between those two bodies and simplify it as two different groups being greedy. Not for nothing, but many of the channels that put out daily videos have an entire staff. (Or, at the very least, they are not one-person channels.) Me? I often prefer quality over quantity. It's why your channel is so great. From an audience stand point, the time invested in each video is worth the wait and worth the time between. This is true for many of my favorite channels of various topics: Nerd City, Knowing Better, Lindsay Ellis. Jon Bois was probably 20 videos a year at the most when he started his channel.
