Great content as always John! One of the first ever jobs we did ended up severely overloaded and should have been a $650 overage bill for me to collect at the end, but ultimately the bill never got paid. I was very frustrated with the client for not honoring our agreement, but even more so frustrated with myself for not being better. I ultimately ended up writing it off, but the lesson learned will stick with me forever. All we can do is our best, and learn from our mistakes to not repeat the same painful process. Keep up the great work!

Hey. Your videos are really inspiring to me. I like your attitude about dealing with customers and just the general vibe. No bullshit. I apologize about not watching all your vids but what do you do about invoices? Handwritten - Mobile printer? I had a dumpster customer that was a real dick about not getting a paper invoice because i email invoices normally. He said he didn't have email account but he had an iphone 14 so yea. Anyway any thoughts on that?

I email all my invoices. It's 2024, your customer can figure out how to receive an invoice thru email. I appreciate you taking the time to watch my videos, very much appreciated Mike.

Thank you John. We have been watching your videos for about a year and followed your idea of putting out signs. 75% OF OUR RENTALS ARE BECAUSE OF THEM!! We never would have thought of doing it that way if it was not for you, so thanks again! Do you take all your payments online and then bill for overage? Do you bill after dumpsters are picked up for the whole deal sometimes? We only take cards on file and feel like we are missing out on a lot of money so decided to try taking zelle, apple pay and transfers. What do you think about running a card for a very small amount just to be able to save it for dump fees above what is included?

Love the fact the the yard signs or bandit signs are working so well for you guys. Sometimes it's the simplest ideas that can have the greatest impact. Everyone pays online for the initial dumpster and delivery as well as any add-ons. Then once the dumpster is picked up and emptied, I send a bill for tonnage charges and extra days, and any specialty items. I don't keep cards on file because of higher POS rates and lets face it, if you charge a card on file and the customer didn't want to pay... you now have a charge back which increase fee's and charges to the business. I try and keep it as simple as possible. Happy NEW YEAR Bruce, keep making waves in your market, you guys are def having an impact. Proud of you both.

@@samedaydumpster Ah! That makes sense. So you're not just running the card after having it on file. You get the initial payment up front, send a bill for the post paid tonnage, and they pay (most of them anyways) once they get the notification of the payment due after the service is completed. Are you including a photo of the weigh ticket or just the quantity?

$1000 is nothing vs your gross, but I don’t like losing or letting people get over on me. I learned a $2500 lesson my first year in business and that definitely stung. Learn from mistakes and improve. 3/4 mil for basically one man show is impressive. Congrats on the success!

I'm with you, the principal of someone not paying eats at me pretty good. But I also need to take a moment and step back and realize that the amount I'm going to take a hit on is incredibly low for the total revenue I did this year. The lessons we learn in life that have the biggest impact are those that cost us money. Thanks for sharing your story and here's to 2024 my man. Let's all have a safe and growing year.

Thanks John makes me think more about my clientele profolio and my exposure . I always have a few invoices I end up eating at end of the year. One thing I just thought of .. do you know if you can send them a 1099c for forgiveness of the debt ? I'm going to have to ask my attorney and my CPA.

Isn't having a "credit card on file" illegal? Here in Canada we can "have the CC in our computer system if we cannot see it. We cannot have a physical record of it anywhere.

That's a very good question for your guys in Canada... I have no idea! I choose not to keep a credit card on file, because I still feel that trust is the most important part of my business relationship with my customers. Call me crazy, but I still believe there are good people in this world that keep their word and promises and will pay the money owed. That's just how I prefer to run my show.

John after the Lawyer's letter you were wrong... you have to go against the property you serviced mechanic's lien ... yes even if the owner of the property didn't hire you a mechanic's lien against the property

It's the principle, lif you don't make them pay for service rendered then they will try the same con game with another business and another and another because nobody is going to make them pay up! Try filing for a Mechanic's Lien if you can, it's usually for builder's and contractors who do improvement on someone's property and land and customer refuses to pay for: service, material, and labor cost. It's a lien on customer's house and land and it takes TOP PRIORITY with the judges in court! Time is of the essence, file a lien within 90 days of job completion

I think that's solid advice for anyone wanting to go that route. I prefer to keep it out of court, not letting it get to that point, and keeping the potential problematic rentals on a close leash sort of speak. If you do enough rentals, you're going to eat a few here and there as there's no such "fool proof" system. I try to constantly improve mine and keep the loopholes to a minimum. It's always changing, but it def takes a lot of work for sure. Thanks for sharing your way with all the guys looking for some help here. Much appreciated.
