You kept running your fingers up and down the stalk to make it look clean but...why? Does it grow back? I'm sorry for the stupid question but I'm new to the gardening game and I want to start growing greens and need to know what to expect. One more question.....How do you have such perfect greens? There are no holes or tears in it from snails. Just curious!

Hi! I really enjoyed your video. The technique you used to harvest your collards is called cropping. I was looking for a video to show to my students using this technique. As long as you don't crop off the new growing leaves in the center your collards will continue to grow. However, If it gets hot they will bolt by flowering and go to seed. Once they bolt the seed making process takes the energy from the leaves and the leaves turn bitter to taste. To prevent bolting pick off flower shoots as soon as they appear. If its too late now you have plenty of seeds to sell.

I Didn’t know they were called tree collars I got six of them at Home Depot when they were little baby starters and I put them in containers my patio and they’re just growing like weeds and now I know how to harvest them thank you again so much for this video showing your techniques of cutting or breaking off the stems and keeping them relatively even all the way around for continued growth this is truly a blessing for me this learning experience as I was just letting them grow grow grow and scared to touch it because I didn’t want them to die and I think you so much

Thank you! You helped me so much more than you know. ❤ I just learned how many collards to plant, how to harvest them (or, crop them 😊) and how many to pick for a mess of greens. One question. Why do you plant collards in front of your tomatoes? Is it for pest control, shading, companion panting, space, or is there another reason? Your collards and tomatoes look amazing!

Oh no reason I was a first time grower back then and that was my only raised bed at the time so I was just trying to squeeze everything in there lol

Next time don't use scissors...hold them firmly at the base and twist them off. It's actually better for the plant when you do it that way and it triggers the plant to produce more leaves. You don't get the same effect when you use scissors.

Quick question, this may sound dumb. Now if you let your collard greens keep growing will they turn into a collard green tree? Also, will the bottom were the stalk is, keep replenishing leaves? I'm so lost and Google is not answering questions like. 🥺

Hello and it’s not a dumb question, we all have questions when it comes to gardening. No not all collard green plants will grow this tall, it depends on the variety and how you take care of it/feed it. When I had my plants I just got small little leaves towards the bottom before I removed them.

The longer you grow and harvest the greens they will continue to grow and soon or later you'll see them grow taller and taller if you stop taking proper care of them they will bolt, as soon as you see them bolt (growing yellow flower) ✂️ them off.
