I had a customer who kept saying she only paid £6 to have her lawn done with her last gardener so when I upped my prices she has stopped using me. She wanted to pay the price of half hour and I have a minimum charge of an hour because it's not worth my while otherwise. The same day she dropped me I had a new client booked in for 2 hours. I am always saying if I knew what I know now how good would that have been . You have provided excellent advice and you listened and is a credit to you , something new starters should consider. Yeah the perfect round i’ve been chasing that for 35 years and I guess that is the one thing that motivates me . Sometimes I nearly get there but they either sell up , ride on ahead or retire . I find good customers like the lady you have just quoted consider the cost the lowest priority, it’s the reliability the professional approach and giving a superior service . Great Video Rob and congratulations to you for unlocking some parts of key to success.

Good video Rob. You also tend to find that when you have charged a good rate, you enjoy doing the work all the more and are more likely to give it 110%. If you get paid what you feel you are worth, you feel appreciated which is sometimes worth more than the money. There is nothing worse than being on a job that you have under priced and to top it all off, there is no appreciation for the service that you provide. You are doing the right thing, there are loads of great customers out there, it's just finding the buggers 😂

Hi Rob. I'm sure you've heard the saying 'don't be a busy fool', but when you're a one man band, its easy to fall in to the trap, especially when you're looking for work. I know that having an almost military mindset to work is good from a discipline prospective, but maybe not so good when building a business. I don't know, what do you think ? Anyways, I'm loving your videos. Cheers Rob
@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices2 жыл бұрын
I agree Kev, having a military mindset can sometimes be a hinderance. There is a need for flexibility and sometimes I worry about not getting to job because of weather etc. I have learnt that these things happen and people need to understand. If they don’t well, they get replaced. As long as you communicate and try your best I think people on the whole , understand. I was far to ridged with the amount of cuts per year, I have learnt that its weather permitting and a need for flexibility. In short, we keep learning and moving forward. All the best.

Great vlog. Some customers think they are doing you a massive favour. They forgot it’s a mutual agreement that benefits both parties fairly. You often find these types work for an employee ,know their rights and imagine that there employee could not do without them. They know their employer couldn’t negotiate their wage down each year with the threat of getting a cheaper person to fill their roll or bully them verbally because they know the law prevents this. When those same people expect you to be cheaper and talk down your business , then we should be glad we don’t employ them and let them go .

Hi Rob , just like to first thank you for the sharing your knowledge. I've learnt a lot in half an hour already watching your channel its great 👍🏽. I also have a gardening round myself and all I want to ask you is how do you manage pricing for shrub pruning etc . Would you class this as additional work if you already maintain lawns and do a separate quote for pruning. ? Keep up the good work 👏
@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and your comment Sean. I price for a lawn cut only. Then a price for garden maintenance which includes shrub work. Up to a certain height. For example, a 50 minute lawn would be £30, approximately 40 of maintenance is £20. That would be £50 per visit , approximately 16 fortnightly visits per year , maybe more weather permitting. It’s not a timed visit , some are longer than others. Every visit you keep plugging away. I hope that helps.

Great place to be Rob. I started last year, I started way to cheap. I did put my prices up but still feel I'm not charging enough. I'm currently overbooked, most of my work is weekly and large gardens. I've been considering dropping a few clients, the fortnightly few. However, I think I've been too keen to give discounts to the large jobs, so I'd be interested to know how you deal with the large jobs. Do you give discounts? If so, is it based on a percentage? Or do you charge a price on the big jobs as well? I offer discounts if it's weekly and 3hrs or above. I currently do 4 that are 5hrs each per week (& yes, I've been doing these based on time/hourly and not price). If you have just taken on a client this year, would you still drop them because you have taken on another job or would you keep them on till the end of the season?
@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices2 жыл бұрын
I never give an hourly rate. It’s a price per visit, approximately £30 per hour. A three hour visit £90 , tell the customer an approximate time on site, some visits longer some shorter. Never give discount, stick to your price. I would try and see a garden out for the season, however if I have under priced it, I would message the customer and be upfront. If the customer was a pain, yes I would drop them. We are running a business not a charity. I hope that helps. Good luck.

Hi Rob just thought I'd ask for your advice. I've switched from charging by the hour to quote work which has been brilliant. I've lost a few customers and I've just lost another as they still go by the hour even though I told them I don't do hourly rates anymore. A customer asked me to get rid of some old gravel boards and stakes push the stones back and put in new gravel boards that I'd have to cut to the size she requires and new stakes. I charged her 20 for picking up the materials 100 for labour and she would foot the cost for the materials... Do you think I'm asking to much? As she just plain blew me out and said I'm charging way to much per hour 🙄 thanks in advance

I haven’t. I find that the self feed heads aren’t always as good as it says on the tin. All the best.

I'm intrigued as to what hours you do in a day? I'm limited with childcare currently so do 9.30-11.30 and 12.30-2.30. Once childcare isn't an issue I'd be interested to look at how best to work the hours

I start the first lawn at 9am and the last approximately 4 pm , then travel time home. However you can work around childcare, that’s the beauty of being self employed. All the best.

I take a week off, and put fortnightly customers back one week.

If you’re busy, put your price up slightly. It’s a business, not a charity.

Remember my mantra. You never lose customers. You just replace them with better ones. We run our businesses very differently. With different goals and ambitions. But that's okay. Personally. I have a set amount I earn every day. Sometimes I'll go over that by 20 - 40 quid. But that's it. I'm off home then to enjoy my day. I have a customer whos in his final throws of life. I don't charge him. And on one estate where I have 50 customers. Each time I'm around one of those customers gets 50% off there bill. Just as a thank you. I better shut up now before I give you a heart attack!!

Agree with everything you say mate. I’d be a bit worried/paranoid with letting a customer go that they will not be so understanding and would put bad reviews all over the internet etc.

If that happens, sod them. We run our businesses not customers. If you want rid of a customer just do it and move on.

How do I price Gardens I thought about £20 per garden that's back and front but I don't know if that's too high or too low
@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices2 жыл бұрын
I start at £25. For 45 minutes work. £30 for an hour and so on. Don’t give an hourly rate, work out how long it will take and give them a price for the job that wants doing. I hope that helps.

That’s one way of doing it yes. I don’t want to sound like a smart Alec because I am not. Still learning. After time you will look at a lawn and know whether it’s a £25, £30 or £35 etc. I hope that helps. 👍🏻

If you're not losing a few customers because of your price you ain't charging enough.
