Speed knitting style. Irish Cottage/Lever style. Less joint pain and much faster. I’m using circular needles here with a 60 inch cord.

This is how my mother knit! She swore it was faster, but by the time I learned, she wasn’t knitting anymore. Someone in the neighborhood taught me how to throw and my mom used to shake her head about it. Now I am older and want to not be throwing my fingers around so much I am going to get this one going on. Thank you.

I'm Australian and have been an ardent knitter. I hold my needles in similar fashion, with wool held in right hand with wool round pointer finger, and when wrapping the wool my right hand doesn't leave the needle - helps faster knitting. I'm in my 8th decade and have never heard of Lever/Irish Cottage Style Fast Knitting. Thank you.😊

I came to this video hoping to learn a new way of knitting, but it turns out that I've been knitting this very way for 70+ years. Who knew?! Thanks for the demo anyway. lol

Huh I've been doing this left handed for a while now. I didn't know it was a technique lol I don't think I'll try to make myself switch to my right hand. Thanks for the information! This really is a much easier way to knit! It works with crochet too

@@ATOMAThreadOfMindfulness Thanks! I am a hybrid - knitter, too. I anchor my right needle between my index and middle finger, too, my position is about 7 degrees to the other needle and I flick the right one on the downside in direction to the left one. Only for a sweet, tiny little quarter of a second. So it' s hybrid between lever knitting and flicking (English Style). Have you ever tried this? I love it! I'm badly disabled, my upper extremities shiver whole time (desease) and so when it began 7 years ago my docs told me I'd never be able to put drinks into my cub, nor cut a steak or so, nor knit nor…so many things. I tried several styles, portuguesian style, english style, lever style and Irish cotton style. Then I had to mix a bit… nothing hurts! And: I needn't put my whole hand away from the needle, it's great! The shivering is a bit better, only a bit, but better than nothing. Perhaps you can give it a try and then tell us? After half an hour I was as fast as before in my used to style which was continental style. If it is benefit for me with disabilities it might be fine for more than only me. Bye for now, I hope to read from you. Be blessed!

@@ConnyNordlicht Oh that’s wonderful that you were able to develop a style that works for you with your disability! Thank you so much for sharing that! I will have to give it a try! I have terrible psoriatic rheumatoid arthritis and it is what led me to learn the style for Knitting because I was having so much joint pain that it was getting difficult To knit and I couldn’t bear giving up my favorite hobby. This style has allowed me to knit pain free thankfully! 😍😃

@@ATOMAThreadOfMindfulness So it's very close to me: I've got Fibromyalgia, osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthrosis in all joints, thost of my cheeks, too. My upper indexfingerjoint I often have to reposition with my other hand and it hurts like hell. With „my“ style I can knit without using much of any joint, only a bit my middle - or index [ depends on which I use ;) ] and evtlly a bit osf my left thumb/ index - combination to make fit the stitch onto and through the right needle and back again, if it doesn't fit from itself if I wantso. Write me your email and I'll send you a short video to help. I'd do all I can except giving here my emailadress free. Ok? Be blessed!

Most effective on long straight needles. Also faster. I have 16 inch needles so I can tuck the right one under my arm.

This is how I knit. I've never heard it called lever knitting before. I possibly wouldn't knit quite as quickly as you because the stitches on my left hand needle aren't so near to the point, because I'm afraid they'll fall off too easily.

This is how I knit but I wrap the yarn around pointer and pinky fingers. I’m a fast knitted and I constantly get compliments on my tension which I contribute to how I hold the yarn.

This is Irish cottage? I have knitted Irish Cottage for 40 years and I have never seen it done anything like this or even done on such short needles. I was taught that the right hand doesn't even touch the needle but lightly waves passed. It is more efficient and a lot faster. But then again there seems to be many variations on one style even.

That’s so interesting! I was told it was called that but you are so right, there are so many variations it’s highly likely there a different way. I love learning about all the different styles of knitting. Just fascinating 🥰🥰🥰

When i read about lever knitting it says the left hand moves the left needle instead of the right hand moving, this just looks like regular knitting to me 🤷🏻‍♀️

Hi there☺️ yes! Absolutely I’ve done several blankets with this technique. Although I will say it gets harder with the bulky/ jumbo yarns to do this wrap.

Why do you hold them this way? I am self taught and mostly a crocheter so I hold my needles both pointed tips up, working yarn in the left hand, and I use a tiny movement with the right needle to grab the working yarn and pull through the loop instead of wrapping the yarn between /around the needle. I have no idea what you would call the way I do it, but it completely eliminates the step of wrapping the yarn around, saving a lot of time and wrist movement. Is there a specific reason to hold them this way or just personal preference? Thank you for sharing your method!

It just sounds like you knit continental. There are many different styles and which you use largely depends on where you live and who taught you. Lever knitting is the fastest kind for most people and better at keeping tension than holding your yarn continental, though there are better for purling and lace

This is supposed to be a really fast method and was used years ago by women who knit commercial items and had to get a lot done quickly. If you look up Stephanie Pearl McPhee, there’s at least one video of her knitting like a speed demon this way and explaining it to some degree.

Preference. For a some it's not about the speed but about the experience, for others lever knitting is faster, and for others this is more comfortable
