Speed knitting tip number 1: Learn picking or flicking
A common misconception is that you need to learn to knit continental to knit faster. Sure enough, knitting continental can be fast - especially if you learn how to pick. And a lot of beginners aren’t even aware that there are different knitting styles across the globe. But if you google flicking or lever knitting for only a sec, you will find tons of tutorials to speed up your English throwing as well.
So knitting faster is not about changing to a different style - it’s about optimizing that style.
Tip number 2 on knitting faster:
Use metal needles. A lot of beginners start on bamboo needles, and that’s just fine. But if you are using some slick coated metal needles, you will instantly notice the difference. Here's my review of the best interchangeable knitting needles.
nimble-needles.com/wool-and-t...
Tip number 3: Bunch up stitches on your left needle to knit faster.
So, what I always do is, I bunch up quite a lot of stitches here on the left needle. And this gives me a nice reservoir of stitches I can easily push forward without constantly taking a break to push more stitches towards the tip.
Speed knitting tip number 4: Turn your fingers into a conveyor belt
If you look closely at the video, you will see how my left middle finger and thumb is constantly pushing the next stitches forward. My middle finger only pushes the next stitch, while my thumb transports more stitches forward from further back. And my right index finger is transporting the stitch I just finished further down the right needle.
Tip number 5: Knit looser
The tighter you knit the harder it will be to insert your needle and pull the yarn through. So, by forcing you to knit looser, you can speed things up with practice.
Personally, I don’t like knitting with such a loose gauge. It creates a different kind of drape and stretchiness I actually don’t like to see in my projects. But this is a personal preference
Tip number 6 for faster knitting: Knit closer to the tip.
The further up the taper you knit, the farther you need to move your needles back and forth. And that takes time. Not seconds, obviously, but if you want to knit more than one stitch per second, every millisecond counts.
Tip number 7: Tension your yarn the right way
I tension my yarn by wrapping it around my pinky finger, then bring it across the back of my hand and let it rest on my index finger. For me, this works quite perfectly. Others only wrap the yarn around the index finger, etc. I won’t be able to tell you what works for you. However, if you constantly need to take breaks to adjust your tension, than this is a sign there is room for improvement
Tip number 8: Use both hands
So, when I am knitting stitches, you might see that I am moving both my hands. My left hand isn’t still, it moves up and down as well. And that shortens the distance my right hand has to move. And likewise, I can do all the leveraging with my right-hand, or I can support that with my left hand for a similar effect.
Tip number 9: Practice in Slow-Motion
When you try out new techniques, do it in slow-motion. Don’t try to knit as fast as possible, instead exaggerate and go slowly, and once your mind and muscles learned the new motions, increase the speed one bit at a time. Because if just try to knit as fast as possible without the proper muscle fine control, you will only end up with very sloppy stitches in the best case, and in the worst case you will injure your joints.
Tip Number 10
It’s very important to work. A lot of people slouch on their couch or favorite armchair when they are knitting. To avoid injuries and pain, it’s very important that you find a nice posture, that you take breaks, that you stretch out your hands and shoulders ever so often, and stay dynamic. The muscles in your eyes will welcome a little bit of change as well. They were not meant to focus on one spot for 4 hours straight.

As a professional editor by day, I have one suggestion for you: WRITE A BOOK. It'll be a huge success. You're an exceptionally gifted teacher. Your instruction is perfectly balanced by practical demonstration and technical analysis. And all in clear and concise language. You don't use words just to make noise.

@@NimbleNeedles Every teacher is unique for a specific class of students. You will attract an audience that will respond to your style, and I've a feeling that it will be a fabulous variety of personalities and ages. An all-inclusive audience for an all-inclusive teacher. And if you add components such as exclusive videos downloadable only after purchasing the book, perhaps international seminars around the world, etc., I'd bet they'll be queueing around blocks for your book/seminar. I'd pay to be in one of your seminars and I've been knitting for 30something years.

I agree 100%. I knit a lot into my 20's, but having children and a job meant that I didn't have as much time for hobbies. Now that my kids are older I have started knitting again, and I have watched a lot of KZbin knitting tutorials. Yours are among the very best. Not only are your tips technically good, but you also give options for different types of knitters and give gentle guidance which encourages us to remember why fell in love with knitting in the first place.

I'm usually a flicker,, but I can knit Continental style as well. In fact, I use both when knitting colour work. I carry one yarn in each hand, and work the individual stitches in the requisite colour, either flicking or picking as needed. Much more efficient than constantly dropping one colour and picking up the other.

Knitting is an art. The creation of that art should be what gives you the pleasure and not so much having an end product. So enjoy the trip more than the destination. My son once asked my why I keep spinning more yarn when I haven’t used much of what I have made so far. He thinks it’s a waste of my time. I enjoy the process of spinning and watching fluff turn into yarn which I could use. I really like washing my winter creations in summer and seeing all the lovely stuff hanging there. It gives me a sense of pride. Nevermind that it’s not as even as it’s’supposed’ to be. Wasted time ? No! The joy in the process and the glow inside at the lovely hanks is worth the clutter in my cupboard :)

Thank you so much for such an informative video! I really enjoyed it! I am an English knitter but recently tried knitting Continental style in order to speed up a bit. While it has certainly helped me with stranded colour work, I found Continental knitting quite painful for my arthritic hands so decided to stick with my throwing. Your video has reminded me that although my to do list just keeps getting longer and longer, I prefer to enjoy my knitting rather than speed knit my way through a sweater in under a week. Thank you Norman 💜

I learned knitting the English style, which caused me a lot of pain in the hands and wrists, after a decade. I tried Continental knitting, but never managed to get the tension right. When I discoverd Norwegian knitting (through Arne & Carlos videos), it changed my knitting life, at least for the level of pain. If you have arthritis, maybe that style could help you. In the end, no matter what styles were knitting in, the important thing is to be able to enjoy our passion and have happy knitting time :)

Hello from the tropical island of Puerto Rico. Between May and June I decided to knit a couple of things for my son. Because I have not knit nor crochet after I learned years ago, I started watching knitting and crochet videos. I subscribed to a couple of them that I liked but nothing like your channel and Barbara Benson's channel. I have learned so much from you and her that you have no idea. Both are knitting channels but a lot of the information applies also to crochet like the advice to make a swatch, to block the swatch and the pieces, what type of needles to use, to enjoy what you are doing and to not compare yourself with other knitters or crocheters. Thanks!💜💙💚

I learned the very basics as a child from my mom, but had to relearn once I became an adult. I subscribed to you, cuz it looks like your videos will really help me improve, since I no longer have my mom.

I discovered the pleasure I get from knitting is the actual doing, not just the wearing when it’s done. I have anxiety and knitting is my fidget spinner. If I knit something that doesn’t turn out I immediately rip it out and start over. Twice the pleasure no pressure.
