This is a tutorial of how to knit one square of the cosy memories blanket. Written instructions for the square are shown below:
I cast on 49 stitches on 2.75mm needles with 4ply yarn
Knit 2 rows
Row 3:K23, Centre double decrease from the wrong side (Slip 2 knitwise seperately, slip them back purlwise separately, then slip them both at the same time to the right needle purlwise from the back, purl next stitch and slip two slipped stitches over this one. You therefore decrease two stitches on this row), K23
Row 4: Knit row
Repeat rows 3 and 4 until you have 1 stitch left on the needle. You will need to knit one less stitch before and after the centre double decrease on each repeat. So you will need to knit 22 stitches before and after the centre double decrease on the first repeat, 21 stitches on the second and so on.

Hi. I know this is an old video but just a note to OP and that is I actually go to 3.75mm needles and 8 ply yarn. Bit bigger squares but turns out great

I enjoyed seeing your method of making a square. I've never seen this type of decrease. It lays very nice and smooth and doesn't cause the fabric to fold where the center is. Have fun Ellie! Sharon xx

I love this pattern. However, I can't seem to get the center stitch to lay flat. On every square I knit it is wavy. I've never had a problem with tension before this. I've been knitting since I was 7. I am now 68. I've got 4 squares done and ready to rip them all out. I just can't figure it out. So frustrated. EDITED TO ADD: I think I figured it out! Squares are looking much better. There will be 4 and 1/2 that will stay wonky but I'm not ripping them out as they are connected and that's ok.

As always a great video, I am curious as to why you don't to the center double decrease knit wise on the right side and just purl that stitch on the wrong side to get that lovely diagonal line
@crafthousemagic

Hi Penny, I tried it the other way but I liked the idea of having the whole knit row on the right side without any interruptions, sounds silly, but that is what I prefer x

I noticed that you lever knit (I think there is another name for it too) - in some vintage footage of Queen Elizabeth she lever knits - anyway, I tried that way of knitting and I liked it on small squares and such but couldn't get the hang of it once the piece started getting so big it draped over my thumb - you do lovely work

Oh fantastic! I did not know it was called that, that is really interesting! I feel all royal knitting like Queen Elizabeth. I have got used to knitting wider things but I am not a fan of knitting with very thick wool. I have adapted my knitting so I can knit with my hands over the needles but I find this method more comfortable x

Try changing your knitting technique? Perhaps try and relax a bit any enjoy the process as well. I know what you mean when my husband knits he is super tight and it makes it difficult to knit. However changing to hiyahiya sharps helped him as well. As they are slicker and sharper than other needles. I hope that helps x x

Great way to use up left over scraps of yarn. If you use thicker yarn and larger needles do you still start with 49 stitches?
@crafthousemagic
@crafthousemagic 3 жыл бұрын
You can. Or if you want smaller squares you could always reduce the number of stitches. Keeping an uneven number for the the centre decrease line x x

Wow, the reverse center decrease looks fiddly but I love the tidy looking knit stitch the forms!! Have you ever done a “Surprise Jacket?” I wonder if you could use this for the double decrease??

Hi! Thanks for the video I’ve already made one of these blankets and now I’m starting a new one. I knitted the first square just like you do and as God as my witness I cannot remember how to get the second one going. I have a 49 stitch square and I picked up 24 side stitches because I want to go off to the left with the row. But I can’t remember how to cast on the other 25 -does it matter? Feel like I’m losing my mind. 😆 Do you have a video for the next step? Thanks again!!

Hi, Ellie. I loved this project and have started a project based on this. Depending on the amount of yarn that I have this will turn out to be either a throw or an afghan. I tried linking this pattern with your name on Ravelry but could not find it. Could you help me out with this?

I enjoyed your video. I do have a questions though. I have seen the regular center double decrease and now your reverse center double decrease. Is there a reason why you use the reverse because it seems that there are more steps involved for the same result. Does it look different? Thanks and I love your blanket !!!
@crafthousemagic
@crafthousemagic 6 жыл бұрын
Sandra Polichino I found it easier to do the reverse sentry double decrease because it means that on all the rows that are on the front side it is just plain knit. If I did it on the right side I would also need to include a purl on the centre back. I would end up knitting past it all the time. That means I only have to remember to do the decrease on the backside and just plain knit everywhere else x
