I do have a small question about the toe but I feel sure that if I watch it again I will understand how to complete. Nice! I found and old Auto Knitter "Made in Canada" at a garage sale recently. It's missing the mast and a few other bits and bobs that I am in the midst of sourcing, so I can I play around. The one thing I have concerns about are the longevity of the socks that come off of these machines. When I hand knit socks, I like to use a rather tight gauge to ensure the fabric I produce is as tough as it can be. The stitches on CSMs, although lovely and even, definitely looks to be somewhat loose in structure and I fear will not hold up. This, I suppose, can be mitigated by manually going in and reinforcing the heels and toes, but it's something I think about. Anyway, just rambling for the algorithm.
@PineappleYarn3 жыл бұрын
What a great find! The tension on mine can be very tight, but then the socks aren't as comfortable 🤷🏻♀️ One idea is to knit a tube on the machine, then hand knit the heels and toes for strength. It will be interesting to see how they wear in the future, but so far so good 😊
@dfblake73 жыл бұрын
Hi, thank you for your video! I purchased a vintage Auto Knitter and have managed to crank a few tubes. I haven't tackled heels and toes yet. So far I do those parts by hand. The main issue I have is figuring out the tension. I'm wondering how many stitches to the inch to aim for? The other thing I need to figure out is how to pick up a dropped stitch when it has already become a ladder! Thank you!
@PineappleYarn2 жыл бұрын
If you have hand knit socks, then you can measure how many stitches per inch feels comfortable for you. If there are too many stitches per inch, or the tension is too tight, your socks will feel uncomfortable. As far as a dropped stitch, when I see it happen, I immediately take my weight off to stop it from unraveling further. I then use a hook, or even a needle/hook from the machine, to knit it back up. Unfortunately, if you discover it too late, there's not a lot you can do to fix it 🤷🏻♀️

38 videos later and now I"m convinced that I need a vintage machine to make socks like I want. The plastic jobbies just aren't that capable. But with the scarcity of vintage machines, and the cost of new metal ones (thanks for leading me to those), I may just have to get needles and do it the oldest-fashioned way. Toques though, the plastic ones look fine for that.

First, amazingly well done video. Clear recording and instructions and no senseless chatter. The knitting machine company should contract you to make instructional videos! Thank you for posting this. I have been making socks on a circular hand loom for several years. The short-row process for heels and toes is basically the same. Unfortunately I have developed tendonosis from hand loom knitting and your video has given me great hope that there may still be a way I can knit socks despite my disability. Two questions. First, I was confused by the bonnet. Where does it come from (chicken and egg -- wouldn't you need one to knit one?) and why doesn't it unravel as soon as you take it off the loom? Second, do you know if there are top down methods as well - in other words, some kind of kitchener weave across the machine when you start that lets you begin knitting at the toe and then pull the weave together to close the toe seam when you finish? (I am sadly terrible at hand grafting toe seams)
@PineappleYarn2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks for your kind words. The bonnet was included with the machine when I purchased it, though there are other ways to cast on without it. I have seen other knitters do a toe up sock, but unfortunately I don't know how to do it!

Love this video Marina!!! Hi Nakia, I have seen an old CSM manual from the early 20th century that had flap and gusset instructions (it required placing open stitches on "hold" on bobby pins or something similar and removing them from the hook needles and then replacing them as needed). I also saw a video of a gentleman doing the same thing but I can't remember where to find either! The instructions are out there...keep on searching.
