are there any optimal settings in terms of how you use anki?How many repetitions for new cards, etc? What is the reason behind showing the word first? Am I supposed to just try picture the character in my mind after being prompted with the word?
@pabloroman16 жыл бұрын
I didn't change the defaults in Anki for the interval of repetitions. The reason for showing the word first is that experience shows that it works both for recognition and for production, however showing the character first works for recognition, but you'll have a hard time producing the character from memory if you are not used to doing the step keyword->story->character. You can just picture the character in your mind as long as you make sure you go through every primitive every time. If you find yourself slacking off or would like to get practice to be able to write the characters fluently I recommend you write it down once, or use the whiteboard function in Anki on your phone.

3:53 As for Chinese, 2000 characters is the absolute rock bottom to not be considered illiterate (as a native speaker) and the minimum characters you’ll know after finishing high school would be around 3500-4000. Most people with a higher education fall in the 4000-6000 range. While 3000 is ok for starting off, it is not nearly enough “to read anything”. For example the last Harry Potter has 3221 unique characters. The widely popular 天龙八部 has 4118 unique characters. Plus knowing characters won’t help you when it comes to the tons of cultural references and a lot of Chengyu or premodern interjections. Knowing characters is only the beginning, keep pushing forward! :)

By far the best method to learn writing Hanzi, I remember by speaking coach saying always follow the greatest example of teaching when speaking - use parables. Pablo's method takes this concept to characters. Before using this, I used simple one sentences to try to remember characters, this worked better than anything I had seen in class, Rosetta stone, Pimsleur, learning radicals. By increasing my one sentences to related stories, incredibly increased the ability to remember the characters. I wish I had come across Pablo's video ten years ago!

First of all, Japanese and Chinese are two different language families. I don’t like him constantly confusing the audience’s cognition. The study of Chinese characters emphasizes the trinity of "sound", "shape", and "meaning" to help learners truly understand the meaning of Chinese words. The Chinese character "learning method" in the video will only waste valuable learning time for learners. It is not very helpful to master Chinese. In addition, he mentioned that the pronunciation and writing of Chinese characters are not related to the Chinese language. A large part of Chinese characters are "phonetic characters" 形声字. The systematic study of Japanese is another matter. I would never recommend my students to use this "method" to learn Chinese!

I'm studying Mandarin now, and I've studied Japanese around 7 years ago. I've studied kanji the heisig method back then, and it works to learn lots of characters, however it's a wasted effort because you don't know how to read words which is what matters the most. Learn words, you'll also learn he characters they're made of. Right now I don't remember much of Japanese because I used that method to learn around 400 characters but then I quit studying and left the actual language learning behind. The only useful skill I got from that is that I can easily write any new character after shortly looking at it due to my mind breaking it down into radicals.

The problem for Chinese learners with the Kanji Koohii site is that it does not follow the RSH or the RTH books. Some of the keywords are different and the ordering is considerably different. Ok, we can admit that each head(=脑袋) works differently, however as a hyperpolyglot, i deem THESE videos sheer nonsense. This is like memorising the colours & numbers of studs on 2000 different pieces of LEGO w/o being able to assemle them into anything meaningful. I contend that common mortals must get an in depth understanding & knowledge & learn to use the lingo thru practice. Even if U may superficially remember the characters, U will never be able to use them correctly and fluently in 50 days, unless of course U be Daniel Tammet the savant who's brain ain't from this world. Take it from a hyperpolyglot: let the two unwise sloppy piglets AND the clever third one be a lesson to us. You cannot built anything lasting without laying & consolidating a good foundation. I rest my case. Amen.

I found this hard to listen to because you don't know how to use the mic properly; it's one long plosive.

Ch 3000 characters - 5 months (150 days) = 20 characters per hr. 1 character @ 3 mins. This is basically the stupid crappy ‘Chineasy’. Brexit all the way

Huxter either way yeah. I'm kinda sceptical that these characters so rapidly remember actually remain in his long term memory. You know how using memory palaces you can remember 50 cards in any given order right. But how long will you retain that cheap bar trick?

@3hornthrasher I'm around hsk5. I don't regard this method of mass memorization out of context as any way to effectively build vocabulary and am a polyglot.

@@QuizmasterLaw i don’t think it’s meant to be a way to learn vocabulary right? In the video he said it’s a way to learn characters, then after that proceed with normal learning, only with a lot of characters now already familiar to you.

@@RyanPhung 3000 characters in 5 months is entirely unrealistic. 1000 is possible.
