In this video I talk about how I learned anatomy from KZbin and other free online resources as I redevelop my own figure drawing skills in my sketchbook. I hope this helps anyone looking to improve their anatomy or get started with learning how to draw. KZbin videos and online resources can be a great replacement or supplement for Art school, and I highly recommend checking out the resources down below!

Winged canvas is my favorite channel for anatomy and basically everything art-learning related. Not only do they have free videos online, but if you want even further instruction, they are an art school as well. The artist Jessie from winged canvas is my favorite, but they also have other instructors with different styles, strengths and backgrounds. You can watch their full streams for instruction and laughs, or just the stream highlights which tend to not be much longer then 12 minutes. They are very informative and helpful. And funny, too. Seriously recommend them to you and anyone else reading this.

Your art videos have inspired me to pursue art again and take an interest in traditional media too. I want to try using acrylic gouache since my art teacher in high school once said I might like gouache, but I never had the chance to try it and seeing you use it made me excited to try using it too. I want to try it soon and get back into sketching in a sketchbook and go after art as passionately as I used to. Love your videos!

when you listed out the old but gold art youtubers in the day, a wave of nostalgia washed over me (why did that make me sound so old lmao). I remember those times when I, just like you, was very eager and loving every single thing I was learning and discovering. I sometimes go back to those videos when I seek motivation and it does the trick alll the time. I'm now what you would call an "intermediate" artist, not quite there but not clueless on fundamentals anymore. And I've been really stuck for the past year if I'm being honest. I feel like I've studied so hard that I don't even remember what I was studying for. I've covered the fundamentals and discovered my artstyle, now what? And the problem isnt even the lack of choices and things I like to draw, it's actually the overflow of so many thing I want to do that everything I make isn't satisfying unless it covers it all, and ain't that just impossible? I want to draw characters, make a story, do amazing backgrounds, but I also want to animate, make portraits, do concept arts. I like all kinds of artstyles: painterly, animated and simple, a mix of both, detailed. What about genre: Dark, gritty, and angsty? Light, wholesome and bittersweet? Action-packed and adventurous? Love them all. And sure nothing's stopping me from making all of those things, but I do want it to at least be less scattered y'know? Narrow it down a bit. Like, Pick a struggle lmao. Honestly now that I think about it, my biggest problem is probably perfectionism lol.
@sketchesofshay
@sketchesofshay 8 ай бұрын
BRUH I totally get your struggle!! I feel like there’s so much I want to do too, and still feeling like my art is not quite at that professional and polished level yet. AND YEAH perfectionism is our worst enemy!! For me it makes me fixated on the smallest thing and waste so much time trying to fix and area that it ultimately just makes the drawing worse. The best thing we can do is focus on the moment, and what we are doing right now, and just create because we love it and enjoy, rather than trying to perfect it or wrangle it in. Through our exploration of different media and forms, we may find the format that best works for us, but I feel like when you’re still in an intermediate or learning phase it can be really harmful to limit yourself. It can be great to build a cohesive body of work and really great professionally to be able to show your work and be able to connect it, but that doesn’t mean you cant continue to explore different things in the side and in your personal practice!! Sorry if this was rambly, is something I really struggle with as well as an emerging artist that likes a little bit of everything!! Might make a video topic about this, do you mind if I quote you?

even though I am in art school, its been all fundamentals for a while and its been so long since ive even drawn a figure that, trying to right now is so discouraging. i dont feel i even can anymore. was assigned to fill a couple sketch book pages with figure sketches and ended up not even turning it in because i was so frustrated with my lack of ability to do it anymore. even a couple months ago i was doing fine, but now it feels so foreign and impossible> HOWEVER, this video has been a great reminder that everyone needs to take a step backwards sometimes and that its okay to need to re-learn

thank you for watching my videos, and I am happy that they inspire you! also, your art or skills are not determined by your age. so many people start earlier in life, or later in life, so try not to beat yourself up! it's never too late to start, especially if you have the passion and the drive to get better! just start drawing and making it a part of your routine again, nothing too time heavy in the beginning. Give yourself a chance to explore what schedule will work best for you and build a habit of just doing a little bit per day. I would tackle one drawing fundamental per month and just take it simple and slow. Don't overwhelm yourself with learning everything in a week. Slow and sustainable habits make for a lifestyle of learning and creating that serves you best. I mentioned a ton of drawing resources in this video so I hope they help you out! best of luck, don't stop drawing!

Dude, your art is amazing! It must have taken lots of time, practise and effort to get to this point. I’m personally not that good, but I just started seriously getting into drawing just a little while ago. Anatomy and hair have been the most difficult for me. Anatomy mainly due to its ‘complicated details’. Also, you’re soo underrated, you deserve more subs!

Hello! I love your sketches they are so good! I noticed many artist do start drawing the figure by drawing the torso first instead of the head, why is that? I'm currently taking a figure class with Will Weston, and his method is similar to yours, keep it up!🌺
@sketchesofshay
@sketchesofshay 8 ай бұрын
Starting with the torso makes it easier to capture the gesture of the pose more accurately!! Your torso twists and turns and is more expressive. When we start with the head, it often leads to stiffer figures, and is a lot harder to change! And when you start with the head often times you get caught up in the details and get too attached, therefore it’s harder to change it in the long run 👍

Omg thank you so much for replying and for the info, now I understand why and it makes a lot of sense, I really appreciate it!! I haven’t finished the video yet so I’m not sure if you’ve covered this but I wanted to ask-How do you keep your lines intentional? To elaborate, I find that one of the biggest differences between beginner and more advanced sketching is being intentional about lines and being confident. I’ve heard that just practicing is helpful but I wanted to know if you had any other tips that can help hone in on that during practice :]

In my own works I find that I struggle to know exactly where I want the artwork to go and that leads to a bunch of hesitant lines and then a lot of erasing. I want to have a better understanding of anatomy so that I can a wide variety of body types because I find humans so beautiful but I don’t think I can properly do them justices with my current art skill set. If you can, tips on how you became more confident in art would super help!
