As a French native speaker, it's a little bit more complex for us than for Korean or Chinese to learn Japanese. But I ended up reaching the JLPT N5 level in 6 months, and I'm so frickin happy about that❤

The school you attended in Tokyo sounds excellent. Even if you aren't planning to go to a Japanese university, having lessons in maths, geography, history etc in Japanese would be so beneficial.

When i was middle of twenties, i learned Japanese very short time (3 months) just for reading technical books. So, though i couldn't speak well, i could read some reports or essays along with a dictionary. At that time, my work demanded lot of reading of many technical articles written in Japanese. Interesting enough, my reading comprehension was not good enough to understand the content simultaneously while reading. So, i had to write down the translated version in Korean, sentence by sentence while reading, so that i could read the same article again with my native language version.😂 Lastly, I am quite curious about what brought you to study in Japan. And your interdisciplinary interest across biology, liberal arts, as well as your pursuit of self transformational (?) effort through learning new languages and cultures, all look deliriously awesome to me. ❤

Thanks a lot for sharing! It sounds like you dived pretty deep into the Japanese language. I totally get what you went through. I also read some technical books in Japanese in my first month in Japan. They were quite over my head back then. But it also motivated me to learn more Kanji outside of classroom, like with the Japanese newspapers. 😊 To answer your question, I was interested in studying business and economics for my bachelor's back then. And since I was also embarking on my journey abroad, I thought Japan might be a good place to start my life abroad while studying business and economics. But now things have changed a lot. Thanks for your kind words! I just like to learn and explore. I'll make sure to share more on this channel! 😊

How did you keep retaining the Kanji? I keep forgetting them. I have the good old fashioned handwritten flashcard aside from that, I barely see them in texts so it is not stored often in my memory.

hi jun! i started learning japanese during my time in undergrad. i was too scared of taking the placement test for spanish, so i thought "i like anime...japan is cool... why not learn japanese?" the choice was.. impulsive, but ultimately, i'm really glad i decided to learn!! i have tons of more respect for their culture thanks to my professor emphasizing (tbh drilling in our brains lol) specific customs and values of japanese culture, and to not be nervous when we make mistakes

In my country there is a test after 12th MDcat which is very compulsory for all medical students not only to get admission in top Medical colleges but without it l can't get admission in any Medical college😭😭 I will always support you. You have such clean English speech, like really clean. Thanks for sharing your experience and giving us some tips! So positive story about truly hard-work time. I had to learn polish for living up to c1 in 7 months and english for work up to b2 in 4 months so I do amazed by your results, cause I can imagine what it took you. Wanna learn Japanese just for myself to watch series, anime, read articles etc. because I liked Japanese culture and couldn't drop that idea to learn Japanese. Could you please give me an advice: should I study in a way like I'd like to pass the exam, because it consists of all language parts, or to hone any specific skills? From my point of view the best way is just to study all exam stuff and it will give you all knowledge you'll need, won't it?

Thank you so much for sharing your journey. I gotta say I am also astonished by your progress! I am sure you will be able to employ the lessons and tricks to learning Japanese as well. Your learning goals are really helpful with what I am about to say below. I generally recommend people not to study for an exam unless they need some sort of a certificate or proof to go abroad or something because it's kind of stressful and takes the fun out of it. A language test like JLPT might seem to give you holistic skills since that's what you are basically tested for (maybe except for speaking). But from my own experience studying for the exam, it seems to me it does not really align with your learning goal. So I would start with getting a couple of good textbooks for grammar and Kanji etc and then make the best out of online resources, including learning apps, language exchange apps, Netflix series and movies, news articles, and animes. I think these resources will allow you to learn Japanese holistically! I hope this helps. But if you want to work on some reading or listening comprehension problems in order to test yourself or something, please go for it!

There are some questions I'd be unimaginably grateful you to answer: Have you started to learn Japanese by yourself before getting to the first Japanese school, like without any tutor? Was it difficult for you? I'd really like to ask: from your(professional already) point of view is it worth to study Japanese from zero on my own using paper textbooks for grammar and internet resources and after I got some basic knowledge(let it be approx. N5-N4) proceed with private tutor or it makes more sense to begin studying with private tutor/school? And one more complex question if you don't mind: you showed in video your very first textbooks, as I understand, at 3:25. I tried to find in Google search by picture these books but Google didn't manage to. Could you please tell me the names of these 2 books to I could find and order it and can I find in one of your video advices on which books you would recommend to use for self-studying? Thanks for the informative video! It's inspiring to know that it's possible to learn Japanese to such a good level in only 9 months. Seems like all we need for that is motivation and a lot of hard work. By the way, how similar in your opinion Japanese and Korean in terms of grammar? And how many Chinese characters did you know from the school years in Korea? I've read that students in South Korea still learning Hanja at school.

I am glad to hear that my video’s motivating and inspiring! In terms of grammar, I would say Korean and Japanese are similar to some extent. Both languages take the subject, object, and verb in order. Regarding the Chinese character, we do learn it in school in South Korea, but not too many because Hanja isn’t mainly used, but Hangeul. Some people take extra classes or go to an academy to learn more Hanjas, but I probably had known 100-200 characters (out of thousands of them to be able to read newspaper in Japanese etc) before I started learning Japanese. My knowledge in Hanja definitely helped a bit at the beginning of my Japanese learning journey, but as my level went into intermediate, the Kanjis were over my head, also because there are differences between Hanja and Kanji.

My pleasure! You are right though. Since we are already familiar with Hanja (at least the basics learned at school), we learn a bit faster compared to (let's say) Western language speakers.

I am learning piano too so will I be allowed a bit more time? ha ha. 9 months, well any excuse really as I just cannot do this. I think you get breaks and take or leave them. My japanese breakthrough was early and I panicked and stopped. I have not been rewarded again like switching off the inner understanding switch.

They are actually textbooks designed by the language school (academy) I attended in South Korea before going to Japan. So I don't think they are selling this textbook other than the school... I am sorry.
