I had the genius idea of buying a Spanish language cookbook to pump up my skills. Basic directions, one main subject, and good food for my reward. What could go wrong? Every recipe in every book (I have 3) requires something not available here in Michigan. I went to my Mexican friends and asked them where I could get some of those items and got a lot of dumb looks and open mouthed stares. These folks own Mexican restaurants and said they had never heard of those dishes. SMDH.

Hi James and Yolada, I know this question might be odd and maybe a difficult one, but it might be interesting to know. So I'm American but of Hispanic decent ( More Spanish than Latin American) and I've been wanting to travel to Spain to see that side of my roots. I'm curious, how do people in Spain, if there even is an opinion on this, view Latinos or Hispanics from outside of Spain? Are there general views of Spanish spoken outside of Spain and do either of you have thoughts on this? The only real statements I've ever heard from people here about Spanish is just the different pronunciations of words or even vocabulary. Love your channel!

Corrections: When I was in Seville last month, I was sitting in a pretty empty cafe. Ther server was so patient with me and my Spanish - she'd let me finish what I was trying to say and then repeated it back to me. Correctly. She was just so helpful and gently worked with me. I'll go back and see her again someday.

They do try to help speak as well as possible, if don't mind Spaniards correcting doing so. I'll never lose an accent, but it's an accent that they all accept very well, and can't pinpoint where it's from, unless know that I'm an American. For example my children have to really think about it, that I have an accent. That's how it goes for all others there, which they'd have to constantly remember that I'm an American, which obviously it's not that way at all every day. That's why some would say that I wasn't an American anymore, that I was one of them all. I thought that was cute, staking their claim on me. Spaniards staking their claim on The American. Historically cute, but accurate. I'm much more historically from Spain, that's why. I have a who knows how long ago family ancestry history there, because of my mother. That's where my self esteem has always come from. Not allowed to have any in Zombieland USA today, about anything at all. It's all about the ZOMBIES, that's why. Have to be so proud of how much darkness wickedness instead. Those who don't know history, are doomed to repeat it. Sarcasm. Works to the favor of Spain. Then again have to be unconditionally illuminated to clearly see that one.

My tip: I have a Spanish TV channel and watch the program Espanya Directo Mon-Fri. I only understand a fraction of what they say, but I understand much more now than I did a year ago. Spanish is my third language (Swedish first and English second). I think it is a bit harder to learn a new language when you are older and I am over 60. So I try to be patient with myself :)

Love you two!! I STARTED learning Spanish when I was 39. I'm 57 now and I have a basic conversational level. My best friend when I first moved here was the Weather Forecast on TVE1 at 4pm because everday you can hear a really small set of words repeated over and over again in different formats which that was a big help. Also I'm a musician so I learned a few songs with Spanish lyrics and I found them really helpful - one has to squish down the timing of the words to get them to fit which aided pronumciation. The third thing that helped was getting to know the Spanish neighbours who were super-helpful and seemed to have endless patience. I can't imagine folk back in England being so welcoming and understanding of foreigners. Spanish people are just so nice and friendly!

Indeed it is a long haul. I once met someone who had become "fluent" in three months! I did a degree back in the 80s and have spent time in Spain, Peru, Chile and Argentina and still have times when I have to smile and nod. Currently live in Sevilla and there is a guy I see at the bus stop on my way home after teaching and we chat. Before Christmas we were chatting and he asked me if I was going back to the Uk for Christmas and I said that my friends there come and visit me and my sister (only family I now have) lives in Arizona. He then started saying something about the time he went to La Vega and I smilled and nodded before realising he was telling me he had been to Las Vegas. They don't do the final "s" here!

I took Spanish for four years in high school and became pretty good at conversing, thanks to a young Cuban refugee who had been accepted at Georgia Tech but took a year out and enrolled in our school to improve his English. My best friend and I helped him with his English. and he helped us with our Spanish. Now the only thing I remember is the dirty words he taught us.

I took a year Spanish when i was at uni at 19.Never spoke the language .I am 47 now with a daughter student in Madrid.She will stay there 4 years+.I visit quite often and though i understand a lot i cannot speak.It is easy at restaurants,supermarkets and stores,as always someone speaks english.Her flatmates and their parents dont speak english but i manage. Non comfort moment:Alone at a bus station with 2 old ladies.The bus was late and i had the app for buses timetables.They asked me if i knew when the bus was coming .Had to respond.Also started a conversation .Felt so proud of myself!!! Grew up with German and Swiss German (it's a bit like Castelano and Catalan, close but not just a dialect), learned French in a belgian Kindergarden at the age of 5 in 3 Months, English by reading Mags about Scale Models at the age of 12 without any effort. And now I'm close to 60 and try learning Spanish for more than a year with a LOT of help from my spanish friends (live a good part of the year in Valencia) gracias Amores! My Castilliano was poor and, surprisingly for me, no-one spoke Catala. My advice; even when you feel comfortable in a language, don't be complacent. keep practicing!

Llevo prácticamente 4 años "estudiando" inglés, hace como 15 años después de pasar el examen de inglés y conseguir un título oficial, me atreví a ir a Inglaterra solo, no me enteré absolutamente de nada de lo que me decían e(intentando) leer un tabloide me eché a llorar ¡ni 1 sola palabra! Cuando era estudiante en el colegio o instituto aprendía más de 8 años inglés y después apenas pude hablar. Solo después, en la universidad, cuando aprendí ingles por mi cuenta mi inglés mejoró mucho. Muchas años más tarde empecé a aprender español. Ahora mi nivel en ambos idiomas es más o menos B2.

I’m a Spanish teacher here in the USA and I try to keep my language skills sharp by listening to Spanish TV/radio everyday. I wish I had a native speaker to converse with on a regular basis to keep my pronunciation as close to native level as I can. SpanishDict is a great resource, but it’s tough to say without sounding awkward. 🤣🤣🤣 Side note: My family and I are traveling to Spain this summer and a Devour tour is high on our list of things to do. We’re looking at the Huertas Neighborhood Food and Market Tour. It would be awesome if we got to meet you and Yoli! I live in Los Angeles, CA Never thought I would need to learn/speak Spanish. I was wrong! I go through periods of trying to learn and then not. Here most of the servers and workers in restaurants are spanish speakers. I've learned a little. I was talking to a coworker and we were talking about how hard english is to learn. Too many words sound the same but mean different things like read, read, red. Never thought about it but it's so true and the slang doesn't help either. I really need to learn spanish, moving to Mexico soon I think. I really enjoy your channel, found it through Spain Speaks.

For me, a really important principle in getting through the intermediate phase of language learning is repetition. I find podcasts that are interesting and where I can understand at least some of the material on the first listen. I then go back and review, ideally using a transcript, looking up words and phrases where necessary. I then go back and listen to the material again, now understanding everything I am hearing. I will then listen to the material several times more over the next few days. At this point I often try shadowing, that is, speaking aloud along with the podcast. This combines listening and speaking practice at the same time. Through this I have been able to internalise the language and just speak - I do not need to think that much about grammar rules. I am simply repeating the patterns that I have heard, understood (and spoken) many times before. I believe that this kind of intensive approach is more effective that say, just watching lots of Spanish TV and only only understanding about half of what you are hearing. To really improve you have got to be able to go and tackle the bits that you are not getting on the first listen.

Vivo en California en un pequeño pueblo “ciudad” en el desierto de casi treinta mil habitantes, y aquí no hay escuelas para estudiar el inglés y por ese motivo siempre estoy buscando vídeos para aprender más; escucho vuestros vídeos y me ayudan mucho a entender este idioma, aunque ya vivo aquí hace cuatro años y mi esposo es de NY pero en casa no hablamos en inglés porque el no se quiere olvidar el poco español que sabe y cuando le hablo en español el aprende cada día más palabras, lo mismo me pasa a mi en mi trabajo ya que yo considero mi trabajo mi escuela de inglés ya que allí aprendo cada día más palabras. Cómo trabajo en un hospital en el área de la nursing home. Aquí he aprendido mucho inglés, me acuerdo la primera vez que llegué allí para trabajar de voluntaria, llamaron a una persona para que me tradujera y me introduzca a la que iba a ser mi jefa; trabajé de voluntaria ocho meses y después me dijeron que si quería trabajar con ellos, al principio les dije que no porque estaba aprendiendo el idioma, pero una semana después me dijeron que lo estaba haciendo muy bien y que yo trabajaba con ellos más horas iba a aprender más el idioma. Ahora os puedo decir que ya no necesito traductor que puedo entablar una conversación con los pacientes, y cuándo no les entiendo ellos me ayudan cambiando el vocabulario y explicándome con otras palabras. I love to work in this job, make my live happy.

Your point about immersion is very true! I am insecure with my Spanish in the states because many of my family and friends are bilingual and fluent in both Spanish/English, thus if I'm not sure of how to say something in Spanish I will resort to English. However, when I am fully immersed in Mexico or Spain, there is no room for doubt! It forces me to say what I've been thinking because saying it in English may not be an option. My vocabulary/pronunciation/grammar is then reinforced with positive responses from the community, which is why it is also important to be corrected if a learning Spanish speaker says something wrong!

James, your Spanish is great! I wish I would speak Icelandic (in 17 years living) as well as you do speak Spanish. I made the mistake of not trying to speak Icelandic with my (now) husband, and that was my perdición. I never studied English, as we learned French in school (but I was a brick as a student), and when I was 18, I wanted to leave the country, so I searched the lyrics of the music I liked, and bought a huge Collins English-Spanish dictionary, and that's the way I started learning English. Left to France, and forced everyone to speak English to me (yeah, was a tough thing to do in France), but going around with my huge Collins, I learned some more English. Now, even though my grammar could improve a lot, I even dream in English. As a child, I would not have imagined how far I got, with my life, and speaking languages, but now I do speak Spanish, Catalan, French, Italian, English, and 1/2 Icelandic 🤪 . Anyway, I think you both are great speaking languages that are not your mother-tongues. Kærar kveðjur frá Íslandi! ☺

What a great and harmonious couple; brilliant! Speaking of the tip on 'getting outside of your comfort zone', I recall some advice that when you speak to a stranger or in a formal situation that language attempts are like a tennis match . . your attempt at saying something is like the serve in a tennis game . . . you fire the ball across the net and with luck the native will hit the ball back with correction, ie he or she will repeat your meaning back to you in correct grammar. I always thought that was not only mainly true but indicative that most natives you try to speak to are just delighted you're trying and thus only too willing to help.

Been living in Spain for 3 years now, with my Spanish wife and surrounded solely with Spanish family and friends. Immersion is definitely the way to go. I make mistakes all the time, but persistence is key. I hate irregular verbs in Castellano as much as Yoli hates them in English, and I hear you when you say you hate por y para!! Grrrr! Conjugating verbs is just the hardest thing!

One way I found to improve my English vocabulary, and the grammar, I hope, was to volunteer for writing articles in an on-line folk music magazine. I new about the subject, as a hobby and mostly in Spanish, so that forced me to find the right translations for the specifics of each topic, as well as reading about them in English books and texts by British or American authors. I have been doing that for almost twenty years, without earning any money for It. I just get some CD, books and concert tickets for free. But the most rewarding is the learning opportunity, mostly when I have the chance to interview an English speaking musician.

Wow! Southport! I’m from Liverpool (The Wirral, actually) and had many summer visits to the beach at Southport, perhaps the longest walk to the sea when the tide’s out anywhere in the world! Many people there have a Scouse (Liverpool) accent, so I understand how daughter might sound like doctor!

Love what you have done with the house! That "terraza" makes the apartment to feel like a house, I would create something like a "salón comedor" outside, the area where you eat, and the area where you relax afterward.

My wife is spanish and we are going to settle in Spain. My first language is french from Geneva and german from Switzerland. I'm learning spanish with Duolingo, it's good and free. I can recommend it to everyone.

I began with Rosetta Stone prior to a trip to Argentina. I spent ten months working through that as well as attending a Spanish class. I used and use Spanishdict all the time. I liked Rosetta Stone because it combined visual learning, listening, reading, writing and speaking. Also you can fit a 30 minute study session in at your convenience. I also found language partners on italki and Tandem. Ahora, llevo estudiando español por más que dos años y hemos viajado a Argentina y España. Vamos a regresar a Madrid pronto porque nuestro sobrino está enseñando inglés allí. También estoy luchando con el malo subjuntivo cada día como el Señor Blick. Muchísimas gracias por los videos.

Just take it as if it was a condition. For example, if you want me to speak, (condition) first go get a coffee --> this could also be said this way: in order to make me speak, first go get a coffee. Translation: si quieres QUE yo HABLE, primero ve y trae un café. 2nd translation: PARA QUE yo HABLE, primero ve y trae un café.

This video is from 2020, so a bit of a late comment. But I am returning to Spain for vacation for the first time in almost a decade. Your videos have been great. James, I too try to read “easy” books in Spanish. Dan Brown and Harry Potters were fun page-turners. Originally I bought paperbacks. But one SUPER helpful thing was to buy the Kindle version instead. The Kindle has a built-in Spanish-English dictionary, so you can literally just click words you don’t recognize, and you immediately have the translation. Plus, you can highlight the word and at the end of the book see a list of all the words you highlighted, to help ensure you remember them. This has really been a profound tool for me.

I have to see the word, see a picture, and hear it slowly. Sometimes if I'm learning face to face I watch how their mouth makes the word and I try to mimic it in hopes that I make the right sound. I love listening to a song that moves me and then I look up the translation of it. I've also watched a lot of Spanish Dramas on Netflix. yeah Por and Para sometimes gets me too. I live in San Diego very close to the Mexico border, so I am doing decent with how Central and South American Spanish is spoken, but I'm trying to get into practice the Spain Spanish, so I always trying to be mindful of the different in sound etc.

Oh my gosh Yoli! I learned English pretty much the same way you did! I started at like 6 I think and went to the UK when I was 15 stayed with a family for 2 weeks. Ha awesome! I'm Romanian btw I keep seeing similarities like this between Spain and Romania. Awesome :D

I moved to London 6 years ago with NO english at all. I never went to class to learn English as I am a bad student. Now I am fluent speaking English.. What have I done? I have been going out every weekend meeting new people in pubs and clubs and my english has been improving quickly. During my second year I was able to have a simple conversation. If you want to learn a new language.. Dont be shy! Don't be afraid of making mistakes! and as you said in your video.. let other people correct you.. I like when people tell me.. oh that is not right.. you shoud say this way... etc Your videos are great.. I have watched most of them and it is also helpful to keep improving English.. All of this makes sense for me. I have been learning Spanish for nearly 5 years. I suffer from periods where my interest/motivation declines usually because I feel like I am not progressing. I get weekly private classes where my teacher only speaks spanish and that’s great. I find my comprehension and reading are quite good, not saying fluent but good. However my weakness is definitely not enough regular spanish practice, tbh due to the feeling of sounding stupid, totally silly I know. This year I’ve signed up to do a DELE B1 exam to motivate me to improve. I personally find having a challenge works well for me. I know I need to visit Spain more frequently, easier said than done.

Don´t worry about feeling unconfortable, we in Spain LOVE anyone trying to speak us in spanish. We fell just the same when trying to speak in english, so we would empathize with you. Keep on trying to comunicate. Comunicating is somethig far beyond just words.

One thing I do to practice everyday is follow a few Spanish Twitter feeds including El País. I read the tweet out loud in Spanish first, then hit the "Translate" button to confirm or learn. Sometimes it's *really* tough because newspaper headlines use a very formal syntax and words, but I love the challenge. My late father was trilingual and he always told me to read out loud to practice. It sticks better that way.
