Okay so let me get this straight: his first (art) job was at DISNEY while he was only 19 and still in art center, to design the MAIN CHARACTER for a movie and his FIRST design was approved? I have one question: HOW?!

I think it is important to acknowledge that it was not one specific thing that led to this incredible situation. Yes, he is talented. Yes, he practiced his skills and improved his abilities. But these were not the only factors. He was also lucky enough to be in a family that could afford to send him to a good art school, he made friends with someone that knew a person involved with the film and the art director happened to like his design aesthetic and felt it worked for the movie. I imagine there are other factors I have left out, as well. My point is that it is not any one particular thing, but a coalescing of a number of things, some of which he had control over and others he did not. Like most success stories this is a case of intense preparation meeting incredible opportunity. A talented young man receiving some lucky breaks. Good for him!

@Olley Ok so while yes without practice nobody will become a master in any skill ever but at the same time talent also plays a huge part when it comes to be not only good but very good. Not everyone is born with the same talent, that is a fact. Everyone can become decent at something if he practice enough and practice it right but not everyone can become a master. Our brains work differently, our genes are slightly different. You can be good at something with talent alone and you can be good at something with practice alone but to be a master you need both.

Thank you BrokenMoonStudios, and I agree with Kram Retsel, even though doing Law feels absolutely adverse to what I'm doing, at the same time, I'm learning skills that I needed which I wouldn't have acquired anywhere else but in a law school; the irony. 😌 It has also taught me to keep pursuing soundtrack composition despite the heavy pressure of a law degree and it's made me even more passionate in it. Made me who I am right now.. I wish you the best of luck too Kram Retsel 🤜🏽💯

Hmmm hopefully. Though he does say early on in the video that he thinks otherwise. Thing is, Asian parents generally like to brag about their children to other Asian parents. That's sort of how you can tell they're "proud" of you. Other Asian parents will usually be saying, "My son's a doctor." then the other would reply "Oh well, my son's a lawyer" or something. When someone says "My son's an aritst" or "My son's an animator" no one understands that. From my experience, that sounds like "My son's a bum" to them. It won't matter whether you're a successful and very talented artist who may even be making more than the average doctor monthly. It's just not a "traditional" occupation so they just don't get it.

Personally I think ‘who cares what a cruel abusive man thinks or is proud of’ because he made it in spite of that very unkind fellow. Not because of him. So I don’t really think his dad gets bragging rights. You only deserve bragging rights if you are kind and supportive, not abusive and discouraging. If it didn’t terribly hurt and scar him with a lame ‘we are Asian so it’s okay’ excuse he wouldn’t have needed to bring it up at all in this interview.

Such an inspiration to just be yourself and find success and happiness in that while inspiring others, something which I feel is at the core of what we all truly want in life but so few manage to achieve. Ross, you're a true inspiration, never stop being yourself.

he has achieved what I failed to do, so inspiring, we had the same childhood, i couldnt pay attention to school, just drawing all the time, I got noticed by some of my teachers and I was always called up for drawing related competitions and I did get some medals for it, but life sometimes gets you and when it hits, it hits hard, I fell into depression and have lost my passion completely, I have a ton of ideas but dont have the will or motivation to put them on paper, I also have a permanent injury on my dominant arm now that added more to my depression, always thinking that I cant draw anymore...

Sheishi Games I know it may be hard with depression and the arm injury but try and still draw! Try to learn to use your other hand or find a way to work around your injury. I know this is easier said than done but art is an amazing thing that makes me so happy to see and you as it seems from what you had typed. So please if you still love art take it up again even if it's just little doodles! Hope you have an amazing time if you do! :D

I'm sorry you've had a rough time. Trying to mine creativity out of depression is like climbing out of quicksand; double the effort when you have a physical injury. I hope you find yours *hugg* Remember that your journey is far from over.

You can still learn how to use your other arm. It will take some time but it's not impossible. I once read about an artist who couldn't use her hands after an accident and she learned to draw with her mouth! I forgot the artist's name, it was a long time ago but I'll see if I can find her. edit: Her name is Joni. Also, there are other artists who don't have arms [and hands], and use their feet to draw and paint. www.joniandfriends.org/kids-corner/doing-report/art/

I'm crying, I can so relate to the whole "Dad doesn't want me as an artist." thing which is why I'm going to med school. I'm still in high school, but my future's basically about study this and that and be a doctor. I try to make this manga in secret and at the same time study for school, but it's just difficult doing the two together and I just can't dedicate myself to my passion and instead go with what my parents want me to be.
@anotherway917

Gosh! Can’t help but want to reply to this. I am in the first year of med skl as an overaged student and I dunno how the future will turn out to be...but from time to time I still try to practice drawing a bit (and have to hide it as well so I totally understand the pain. I can’t even draw with a tutorial from KZbin open so it’s quite hard to study how to draw sth). I personally like med skl but if you have already found out that you really dislike the nature of this career it’s time to secretly find sth else to smoothen the transition! Really hard but you have my spiritual support!!

Life is far too short to let your parents decide what you should do. I know that doesn't really directly help, but even if it 'disappoints' your parents, even if it's hard, you shouldn't follow a path that'll leave you regretful and drained in a couple decades.

@@anotherway917 I didn't really expect a reply from this! Thank you so much! It's been a year ago, but I'm still trying to get into med but I'm working on a webtoon at the same time. It's a gamble for success, if it goes well, I can say goodbye to being a doctor. I've yet to gain support from my parents tho, but hearing this really makes me feel better! Thank you!

@@QuincyIsCrispy That does scare me, really. Thanks for showing your concern, I'm really grateful! I'm trying to be a webtoon artist because it's what I really want even if my parents think of it as just a hobby, I'm planning on making it my career.

I like Ross, even been a patreon for a while. Didn't get much out of it, so I fell off of it. But definitely would support him if I could because he deserves it. I don't necessarily agree that his work is as good as polished illustrations from top companies, it's a much more laid back and expressive art style, but lacks that polish. He has a lot to share. I love him for talking about the abuse openly, he doesn't let it hold him back. Structure and discipline is better than the alternative, but it's too bad when it's too much.

The fact that until Ross's father left, Ross couldn't kindle his love for art makes me believe the fear he had towards his father held him back, and is therefore abusive.

Its not realyl abusive. Its just a bit old fashioned. He holds no ill will or any signs of traumatic abuse, so it wasn't bad. My mom slapped me a few times as a kid when I acted out. His dad was just concerned for his future.

Lols, it's definitely not abusive. I dare say it's more abusive to not hit your kids at all and go the liberal treatment of your kids, raising them like they're you're friends, giving them everything they want, never raising your voice or physically touching them to reprimand them. You'd just end up raising a snowflake adult that can't deal with much of anything if they don't get things going the way they want. Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating beating the snot out of your kids, but you need a balance of everything in life as with parenting. No one needs more spoiled rats running around.

I feel exactly the same way Ross does/did. I had no interest in school, and I had an overbearing father who used the "I only want what's best for you" line as a poor justification for the physical and emotional hurt he caused me. You can still make it as an artist it will just take longer than Ross. And if it takes longer, is that really a good reason to give up? Because the time will pass anyway, wether you fight for it or not. As a concept artist, I would recommend not giving up.
@liizzset
@liizzset 6 жыл бұрын
M4lum Channel I agree with +RichCarey. Don't give up. You don't have to be the best. If it is your dream then do it. If it just for a hobby srill do it. It can be beneficial to you if u want it too. I am not forcing you. Just me I am not. But if you want to achieve then believe. I have seen some people who art is not my liking and still have so many fans. What I am going to say might be monetary but I saw one a guy that doodles online. And he places them onto a shirt and sells them. People liked them and bought them. He thought no one was but they eventually did. I have so many examples that I can fit here. Evem one about a detective which paints . Like for a hobby. So don't do it for the money. If you don't want to. But do it for yourself if you want. Can do it a day at a time.

liizzset Hi again dear Liiz ! Sorry for my bad english, anyway, in my Life there are a lot of thigs totally wrong that make the road to be artist really really hard. I have a poor family ,i finish school 3 years ago, next i try to study at home ..! I haven't money for study , sometimes for buy materials..! Where i live now, art school need so much Money that i haven't. In Italy, it's hard , there isn't Jobs, you pay art school (if you Can) and they will pay you nothing like artist. It's for this that i can't do anymore, i can't belive in a dream that deal me damage every day, because no one belive in me and in what i can become if i have the possibility to study, to have friends for match, to live in a Place when the artist inside me Can find a job and people with the some passion...! I m totally unluck.... I m in a wrong place, situation and family to follow my dreams...and i do not want to suffer anymore...

Really enjoyed this interview, Ross is so natural that you got to love the guy, but you well you were amazing, and I mean it's obvious you admire the artist Ross is, but the way you react to his answers is so full of acceptance without exaggerating the feeling, not like most American KZbinrs, always overexcited about nothing, like they are on brain steroids all the time, very tiring, this remark is a bit on the negative side but is how I feel and most definitely the reason this interview stands out to me. Just love how you conduct yourself and wanted to share it with you.

We all fight our parents and what they want :) It's dificult, financially and emotionally, but eventually you'll become independent and they'll learn to be friendlier to you if they want to see you at all, too :) Don't just feel sorry for yourself for not having "perfect parents", nobody does really. (I'm sure your parents did a lot of small things for you that you can use to make your goals easier, too.) If it feel to suffocating, try to move out. You can probably convince them to pay for that.
