I think that Spanish is super simple compared to Asian languages. Of course I grew up hearing Spanish and I still hear a lot of spanish living in San Diego. But I'm still not close to fluent in spanish. I'm just trying to learn Viet -- because my wife is half Viet and half Chinese -- and I think that it is MUCH easier to learn than Chinese because it uses basically the same alphabet. Chinese seems impossible to me.

I just went on HelloTalk a few days ago. It is just amazing the amount of people I have already met on there. I'm quite addicted to it and really enjoy helping others learn English as where I'm learning Chinese. I was in China in 2013 for one month and saw many cities from Shenzhen to Beijing. I'm going back early in 2019 and am looking forward to meeting some of the people I have met on HelloTalk and go practice my Mandarin. Thanks for the tip laowhy!! I watch your videos quite often seeing as my wife is from Shenzhen. I thought the Pizza Huts were better there than they are in the USA.

props for actually using a dictionary and learning properly. it's harder but your understanding is definitely going to be better. Tomas Av. False.. Half of the countries on this world are very homogenous, even in Europe. I live in Eastern European, I only grew up with my native language, until I decided to study English and to watch English TV shows at 16 years old I became bilingual. Now I can speak Romanian, English and French fluently.Plus, learning Chinese is very special and deserves to be preached for an occidental. Learning a new language with different characters, tones and from the different family is very challenging
@yowe4549
@yowe4549 5 жыл бұрын
@@mironadriana actually no, I'm 18 and I can speak 5 languages. I've been fluent in 3 of them since I was 12. Learning french and english is mandatory here since elementary school and then you have to choose yet another language to learn in high school. Besides those three and my native language, I've been studying another one on my own. Most people do speak more than just their native language.

It's possible to overcome the language barrier with love and determination. I saw a programme of tv. An older English guy married a younger Thai girl. A typical "gold digger" storyline. Except during the interview, they don't communicate to each other very well, but that hasn't stopped them fro keep teasing, looking at each other tenderly. He talked about how she gave up everything in Thailand just to work as a cleaner in England. She talked about how happy she is to have found someone with a gentle and loving heart. Every time when I have doubts in people, I always remember their faces, their strong bond and love for each other. Suddenly I feel so much stronger.

A family friend married an "import bride" from Thailand. Perfect loving couple since over two decades. I think some men just find it hard to find a new relationship after a failed marriage when they are already a bit older (women have the same problem of course). And in turn most western European men are gentle and loving dream men compared to the average Thai guy. There are many couples like that who are genuinely happy with each other.

Hahaha I had to comment as soon as I saw the sketch with what would have happened if your wife didn't speak English when you met. I find it particularly hilarious because that actually is the exact scenario my partner (soon to be wife) and I had to go through. I met her in Spain and I didn't speak much Spanish and she spoke little English so we actually had to heavily rely on electronic translators and when that didn't work we used good ol fashioned charades. Now I speak fluent Spanish and her English is getting better everyday. It is definitely tough. I wish you both the best and your new daughter is inconceivably adorable.

Love it. My wife could hardly speak English, myself hardly speak Chinese 9 years ago. Now she talks to me around the house in Chinese and I answer her in English. I also started the same as you. Not a dictionary but a phrase book and a small note book. Write it down and ask my translator (yes, I had a translator for work purposes) the next day. Great job mate. My wife has also lived in Australia for a couple of years and can dish out the Aussie slang pretty well. I know a bit of Chinese slang but changes every where we go in China. Universal language of motorcycles has got me by in China, also doing exactly as yourself. I get out there with random people and have a go. Certainly not an easy language to learn. Hats off to you and Vivienne.

Actually, if you learn Cantonese, it will help you to learn Vietnamese, Korean and Japanese as well since the pronunciations of these three languages are much closer to Cantonese pronunciations than Mandarin pronunciations. Cantonese is a little harder to learn because it has 6 tones instead of the 4 tones in Mandarin.

I have used HelloTalk in the past and I think it's a great for finding natives to speak to with ease, and without it being awkward. I used this app before the started charging for translations and such, so when I picked it back up to help me with my Chinese studies it was amazing however with the limit it gives you to use certain tools, learning a non-European/romanized can be tricky when you can't even get a quick translation. The uses it 15 per day; however, with the amount of native speakers you can find and the tools it offers, paying a small fee lower than 10 bucks per month is a really REALLY good deal. I mean look, if you're learning a language you buy books, some going up to 40$ or so. So with HelloTalk, offering everything you could need for practicing Chinese with a real person and the tools is a very GOOD deal. Think of it as buying material especially with those cheap cheap rates. Besides, it's still pretty good as a free app.

1:16 That's pretty funny: Michael writes "cuales son" and Gisel (almost certainly Argentinian) corrects him but uses the wrong accent and on the wrong letter! She writes -cuales- cùales (it should be cuáles).
@Nilguiri
@Nilguiri 7 жыл бұрын
I've just noticed Gisel's national flag. Turns out she's Colombian. I assumed she was Argentinian because "Gisel" is a very common name there and Argentinians have notoriously bad spelling! I lived in Buenos Aires for a year. Great place, lovely people, fantastic food, beautiful women! Cheers C-milk.
@MichelGarciaH
@MichelGarciaH 7 жыл бұрын
Not as bad as Chileans; their spelling is the worst. They write as it sounds to them and not as it's supposed to be. On the tilde thing, I blame autocorrect; since its introduction nobody seems to care for their spelling anymore; they just write stuff, let autocorrect change it, and send it off. Sometimes you must re-read something to actually get what people mean. And let's not talk about the absence of commas...
@Nilguiri
@Nilguiri 7 жыл бұрын
Hola Michel Yes, I've also come across Chilean spelling... it's not great! But as I lived in Argentina, I have first hand experience. Many Argentinians and Chileans get totally confused between the z, c & s. They would often try to "correct" my spelling, with their feeble attempts! I remember I once wrote "normalización", and was asked to "correct" it to "normalisasion"! hjaja! I had to get out a dictionary to convince them! On the autocorrect thing, you may be right, but I do not believe for a moment that it would change "cuales" to "cùales"! Not even my old semi-literate Argentinian work mates would use that, especially as "ù" doesn't exist in Spanish! Cheers.
@MichelGarciaH
@MichelGarciaH 7 жыл бұрын
Oh, the autocorrect "learns" from you. If the person spelled the word wrong (even if it was a quote), that's stored on its memory and is what it uses. It's a sight for sore eyes when someone lends you their phone to send a text message and you see what (as we say in Venezuela) "would make Andrés Bello cry".

中文或英文都有難學方面 When it comes to learning Chinese or English both languages have their tough to learn aspects. Examples: 一把剪刀 (One pair of scissors). 剪刀英文是複數 中文是不分單數複數.(scissors are plural in English but we don't have distinguish plural and singular in Chinese). School of fish (一群魚) : could be mistranslated into 魚學校 餅 (Cake, cracker, or Cookie?) ->fortune cookie (籤語餅), Scallion Pan Cake(蔥油餅),or saltine cracker (蘇打餅) Similar sounding words but different meanings. 桶 (bucket, barrel)vs 捅(to poke) 撿東西vs剪東西 (to pick up an item vs to cut an item) 豬vs租(Pig vs Rent) meet vs meat (肉vs見面) flour vs flower (麵粉vs花) offal vs awful (內臟vs討厭)

I’ve only been following you for a couple of months and really enjoy these videos as they pop up. This video is terrific and timely to find as I’ve been wanting to find out how you were able to learn Chinese so well. I love seeing the two of you together and am glad you’re family is safe in the US.

Looks similar to the Lang-8 website where I met the one who would later become my wife. Though, as she was looking for primarily spoken English practice, we took our conversations off that site and went to email and a few VoIP options (this was before the GFW started getting silly with SIP). Good on you for wanting to learn Cantonese. I'm trying to learn it too! My difficulty is trying to remember all the vocabulary - and it's all too easy to revert to English as my wife's English is really quite good, unlike my Cantonese.

Good job! It's so interesting hearing your Chinese - because you have stayed in the south for so long you have a strong southern accent. It's still clear and easy to understand though! Keep studying, you'll get there! I'd say you're at about a lower-intermediate level right now, which is already pretty damn good, better than most 老外。 :)

This is cute as hell - for a self-considered traveler, language barriers are a ton of fun for me. I've had some really difficult situations and also some very good experiences despite a language barrier. Just using hand movements and objects, sometimes even drawing as an impromptu quasi-game of pictionary, has lead to so many fun and interesting experiences. Would love to learn an Asian language myself. Thinking about picking up my japanese books again!

IMO Scritter is hands-down the best way for learning characters because it corrects your strokes in a detailed way. I'm not trying to toot my own horn but my Chinese friends have said that my character writing is beyond what would be expected of a Chinese student, although I write quite slowly. Skritter is expensive though. Another app I use is lingq as an unlimited source of podcasts, all with transcripts. Finally I use traditional social media to set up language exchanges wherever I'm living. This is the ultimate combination.

ah no. no. no. I started using HelloTalk three years ago, and stopped using it shortly after. I did give it another try about a year ago, still couldn't handle it. Most people will not want to talk Chinese, and they only want to practice English. People will FLOOD your in box. I had over 300 Chinese people trying to talk at once. nope. just nope. it's impossible. And sure, you can give some people your wechat and talk over that, but then there is always the risk of them turning into a creepy stalker. Like, good job for getting sponsored, C-milk. But this app is nothing compared to real learning from books. anyone that wants to learn Chinese, do it the real way. apps like this don't help much. especially with learning how to read and write Chinese. because you're just going to end up translating something you don't understand and not truly understanding it.

But at least you learned some. That's a miracle in itself. It's remarkably easy for someone to take four years of Spanish and still say "quesa-DILL-a" or not even be able to conjugate a basic verb in the present tense. Pues.... Espero que las escuelás enseñarían buenas pronuncias en Español. Casi toda la gente, quiénes aprenden español en las escuelás de los Estados Unidos, no tienen buenos accentos. Now on the other hand, when I started learning Mandarin, the lecturer had us take a month or so to make sure we got used to the sounds and how to say them. They should do that in every language course.

People don't mind a sponsored video every once in a while but FULL info and clarity is a MUST. On a scale of 1-10 for a sponsored video, this one scored a 2. It's a paid app, you really should state that when talking about it. That said, most apps have a free version to let you check it out but when I tried to download the app it requested my CC info before even telling me how much it was going to charge, nor gave a free version. TOTAL DEAL BREAKER... these are things you should be mentioning in your videos, otherwise you just get labeled as a sellout.

Actually, I am in that first situation. I am german and I doesn’t know chinese, just very few things which I learned during my china stay where I met my boyfriend. My boyfriend is (obviously) chinese and he doesn’t know English or german. But thanks to wechat, we can translate while we are chatting, because it has a translation function. It’s very tiring sometimes and not very fast with talking but because we love each other we figured it out. And we help us to learn each other’s languages. We are improving a lot because we are each other’s motivation (: I can’t wait for that day where we can finally have a normal conversation..
