3:14: quick tip! When wa is used as a particle (like it is after eki) we do not use the hiragana わ instead we use は but still pronounce it as wa! Takes time to get used to lol!!you will fully understand once you learn particles! 幸運を！(こううんを) ɢօօɖʟʊċҡ!

@@_suika_ In words like こんにちは and こんばんは they always use the hiragana wa, but for わたし it is wa or the kanji for it.(私) However, when you start to learn about particles, the particle は is pronounced 'wa'. Oh my god, i'm so impressed. I've been studying Japanese for almost 1 year while living in japan and it almost feels like we're the same level of speaking. I'd even say you're better than me on speaking. My listening is kind of good at the moment, but my speaking is horrible.I get very insecure. I will use you as inspiration and study harder. In 1 month i've been in japan for one year, and my goal is to start talking before that. If you manage to learn this much in 4 weeks i should definitely be able to start talking in a month lol.

Hi love, it isn't a competition! Everyone learns at their own pace, and as I mentioned in the video I've had experience learning other languages (including Asian ones!) so it may have been easier for me to learn compared to someone who has only ever spoken English. With regard to speaking, I would suggest you not be insecure and just go and start having conversations!! That's the only way you will learn and get better. Trust me, people in Japan love it when you speak to them in Japanese, no matter how broken it is (speaking from experience)! Take advantage of being in Japan to really immerse yourself in the language and speak. You can do it! :)

Go places you know foreigners won't be and try to meet people that way. The more you expose yourself to people who don't speak English the more you'll push yourself to try and talk. I've learned more from Japanese people who don't speak English than ones that do. The app HelloTalk is also really good for talking with Japanese for language exchange. I stopped using HelloTalk though for Japanese once I could understand more. And stream on a Japanese streaming site called Twitcasting.

I'm currently studying Japanese as well but I'm kind of struggling with the grammar :( Looking at your notes they seem really well organized (So envious XD) ! Do you have a structure or tips on studying grammar?

I would advise to get one textbook and stick with it! What I did was a bit disorganized. If you really can't find / get access to a textbook, would suggest following the JLPT syllabus closely here nihongoichiban.com/home/jlpt-n5-study-material/ (this is for N5, but pick whatever level you're at!). read through the concepts that are tested in the JLPT and then study the concepts you aren't familiar with through youtube videos or blog posts :) I would also suggest practicing verb conjugation! We all learn differently. Some people learn a language by focusing on grammar first, others just listen to hours and hours of audio cds/podcasts everyday. There’s a good ted talk about polyglots/people who learn a lot of languages you should check out. Me personally, I noticed I started focusing on grammar when I began learning Japanese. I’m a bit of a grammar nazi when it comes to English, so this made sense to me. Make it fun and make it consistent. I’ve only been learning Japanese for 6 months but I’m pretty confident in the small amount I’ve learned. I know it’s going to be several years of consistent study before I reach my desired level of Japanese.

The problem with most textbooks, and 90％ of other material out there is they teach japanese in the context of a european language, which messes up your understanding of the fundamentals. You need to find someone who teaches japanese AS japanese. Genki, Japanese from Zero, JapanesePod101, are all guilty of teaching it as if it's a european language.

I’ve been trying Japanese for I think around 4-5 months... I’ve been doing pimsleur courses which I like, + a Japanese dictionary app I use to save words I hear watching anime lol (I use the premium subscription for the pimsleur app, they are 30 min recordings + flash cards,etc. but I spend probs around 2 hrs on each lesson) It really helps with pronunciation and speaking and gets you to really remember simple words and grammar/sentence structure. I’m almost done with 3/5 levels, and I plan to buy a grammar textbook once I complete all 5. I struggle to study more complicated grammar still because I still don’t have much vocabulary. I end up getting confused by sentences full of words I don’t know. I’m hoping in a couple months I’ll have enough to really be able to get into grammar. That’s just my personal and limited experience so far!

Here's my study plan incase someone needs any ideas: Part 1 40 minutes of Japanese from zero. (Or less but I have to cover two topics) 10 minute lecture from easy Japanese website 5 minutes of JLPT5 listening practice 5 minutes of childrens book reading practice 30 vocab words flash cards (I don't try to memorize them instead I rely on repetition) Break Part 2 Flash card revision 1 video of let's learn Japanese basics from youtube (i gives me confidence to know that I can understand what natives are saying and it's good revision) *btw now that my summer break is over and uni is reopening, I've simplified by routine.* 40 minutes of JFZ (when I wake up) 2 episodes of Sailor Moon for listening practice (after uni) Memorizing all vocabulary that has been mentioned in the chapter (before I sleep or anytime during the day)

I think Japanese grammar is not that complicated. But the speaking part really takes a long journey. I mean you can easily read Japanese sentences, but when you write or speak, it's a different case. It's harder than you thought it'll be. I suggest if you are practicing a foreign language, you converse it with a native speaker a lot.

With アメリカに vs アメリカで, で is used when you're talking a bit more about where an action takes place. コンビニで水を買いました。(I bought water at the convenience store.) に functions a little more like giving additional information, but can pretty much cover all the bases. アメリカに住んでいます。(I live in America.) When in doubt, use に, but you'll get more familiar of the nuance as you grow more familiar with the language. There's a similar thing with は and が. Don't worry too much about it, because you'll be understood even if you say the wrong one.

Glad to hear you're starting to learn Japanese, it's a really fun language! In my opinion, being able to write it is the biggest hurdle, so don't feel bad if you don't have hiragana and katakana down yet! As long as you can recognize the characters, you'll be fine! 頑張って! Just a small tip: I noticed you used わ as the topic marker in your sentences. While it is pronounced 'wa', the 'ha' character is used to mark the subject. は Same thing when you used え as a location marker. It's pronounced 'e' but the 'he' character is used. へ Often, people just use に anyway. And once again with お. It's said 'o' but 'wo' is used. を

Ahhhhhhhhh. The amount of pride but pain I feel knowing u learned so much in 1 month. I started learning it again about 6 months ago (granted I was still going to college) but I managed to make it a habit and studied mindlessly everyday, just taking in words. Currently I finally have a summer break so I hope to structure my learning now.... But I have no idea how to really organize anything 😂😂 but this video has helped me be a little more decisive and less scared or hesitant to just... structure what I'm doing. It's true, that it can be so I overwhelming but you did so great!!!

Either one you learn it’ll become easier to learn the other in terms of speaking and listening as the grammatical structure is the same. However learning to read and write is easier in Korean as the alphabet is really really simple.

Well you probably shouldn’t speak until you’ve gotten tons and tons of input in Japanese, I tried to speak recently and I was not really that successful. Remember to get lots of input everyday, even if it’s just passive listening.

There is a “learn all hiragana” and “learn all katakana” video by japanesepod. When you learn a new row of letters you can also practice with realkana (it’s like a flashcard website)

I'm a student in college rn and I was lucky enough to have more free time as this is my last semester. I just started this sem 3 weeks ago and that's when I decided that i wanna start teaching myself Japanese (One of my goals is to study abroad in Japan). Watching this video gave me the inspiration to work harder to learn the language. I'm amazed by how much you were able to learn in 1 month and that made me look back at how slow my learning pace hehe. After this, I'll try harder :))) Good luck on your language journey!!

I love watching how others learn their target language! I wish you luck on your Japanese language journey! Im learning mandarin and i definitely need to get better at it. Currently studying and reviewing grammar and i need to practice my listening skills. I will practice my speaking later since i know i will not speak to any chinese people at the moment (plus its so nerve wracking!!) Finally, HUGE thanks for the language extension! personally I think learning on our own is better sometimes, It worked for me with english. (I'm a spanish speaker) I know I still have things to improve but I can read, listen and speak english with others and having friends from around the world has helped me a lot. I've been trying to learn korean and japanese for a year but I haven't gave them the necessary time. I also love learning lenguages, since I had access to internet when I was a child I usually spent my time learning phrases in different lenguages, french, italian, english, irish, but I been more interested in Japanese and Korean and lately chinese. So cute you take your note in spanish btw. I take mine in engish while studing from spanish and english hahaha I hope by this time you've been improved a lot ♥ I hope to do it by the end of this year, I neither have a specific goal but I want to be able to watch programs without subs at least XD
