Also a good way to save money on a vehicle is go to a auction on a rainy day. Less people to bid against,get a vehicle for half or a third of the dealership price, and no car payment! Have common knowledge and sources to diagnose vehicle issues after purchase if any . Then sell for more than you spent to upgrade the vehicle process later.

Its easy to live off the pay. Its only hard if you have terrible money management. I thought i was living like a king, coming straight out of high school. We made way less back then too. Almost all of your income is disposable. You dont have to worry about rent, utilities, or even food at the start. It only really gets hard if you have a family. Especially if youre just starting out in the military.

I'm glad we feel the same way about credit cards! I use it for everything I would otherwise use my debit card for. Take advantage of cash back, welcome bonuses, improve your credit score and never have to pay interest. The Chase Freedom cards recently had a promotion I took advantage of where you get 5% back on gas for the first year, I think they have the same promo but for grocery now. Another perk for military personnel is the annual fee gets waived for EVERY card! That means the Amex Platinum, Gold, or whatever other card is FREE! I recently found this out and wish I knew sooner. Good luck to any other soldiers on their financial journey!

Great info and tips. Took me many years to get to a good financial point in my military career so definitely like seeing and helping others get there faster. One recommendation have for you with the TSP is you go 100% in to the ROTH and not split it with the Traditional. When you retire you want to know exactly what you have sitting in there and not estimating how much taxes will get taken out

I got $110 a month on pay while attending school after graduation. Mess hall was free. Sometimes we did Whopper runs for burgers. Base theater was 25 cents.

Bro! You live in the Barracks with no utilities, and you can go to the chow hall for free. If you can’t survive on that I don’t feel bad for you 😂 You’re right just buy a beater car. If you want not a beater car, get a car loan from Navy Fed or USAA, DO NOT TRUST OTHER BANKS!! I’ve had USAA since I was in the Marines and I’m perfectly happy with them! 🤣I had money out the ass as a young e-3, but I also had to pay for my own food, because I was a Crewchief.

this all GREAT advice!...alcohol will run your plan off course quickly so beware. The credit card is good advice...I use 1 card for normal fuel and fun and pay it off on payday. When the markets tank don't rush to the G fund...buy low, right? that saving bit is TRUE! That $1,000 in the 90's isn't poop today. I go to sleep with a dollar on the nightstand and wake up to 85 cents...it happens but I keep trying. Thanks for the great advice!

Survive off military pay? While base pay may look measly, the military pays for your housing, gives you clothing allowance, gives you allowance for subsistence and, the greatest benefit, free health care. This additional benies are non-taxable as well. With that said, while the pay is not great for what you have to give in return, military personnel are paid well.

I’m definitely doing this brother, when I go back on active. I was on COADOS order which is active orders for the reserve for a year, I made 30-40 according to the IRS. I only had 5k to show for it. Than transition back to a civilian,A year in as a civilian all the money gone, life kicked me in the fucking face and boom. Now this kick is forcing me to change or to continue to be a bum. I know for damn sure I ain’t going to be a bum anymore, my girl and daughter was affected so badly because of my dumb spending on alcohol

Gi bill and some tax exemptions are good, but besides that all my friends in the marines and some others in army/air force told me its a waste of time, paid in pennies, toxic leadership along being treated like a child, contract makes it hard to have a saying in anything. Don’t get me wrong i wanted to join, but as I spoke to veterans it was more of a “if you don’t know what you want to do; join” type of deal. They lost so much and get no benefits worth their sacrifice. Not even top secret clearance is good, you can get one by going through certain jobs. I could not live off 2k a month. I am doing 1200 a day working along service men, and they are overworked, and under appreciated. Elaborated enough?
