Great video and information Dan! I've proven to myself that I can not only live on a 10ft jon boat, but live happily and with a budget of less than $50 a month. Less than that really, especially if I fish more. Since proving to myself that I can live with so little and be happy in such a small boat, I know that when I get a sailboat I will be even happier. As long as she is solid, floats and sails, it'll be a dream come true. The rest of features I consider luxuries that I will gladly improve over time.

Also, if you're handy with electrical appliances, you could make a dehumidifier for the cabin that would collect water from the atmosphere at the same time. The compressor, condenser, and evaporator are pretty easily harvested from cheap old beer fridges or mini fridges.

Very nice video. Well done. My wife and I did this lifestyle for over 25 yrs. And yes, tho occasional visits ashore with family, or having them join us was great, just for a little while. Provisioning and cooking on a boat is an art. My wife was an expert at it. We ran charters for the “cruising kitty” a couple of months or so a yr. That meant semi gourmet meals 2-3 X a day. She was amazing at it. We also offered SCUBA diving so that kept me busy with diving and filling tanks, and running the passages with clients. We treated them so well that they didn’t want to go ashore all that much. Ha ha. We had a KP 44 center cocpit cutter. Before this we had an Alberg 35. Hurricane Andrew destroyed it, so we upgraded to the Peterson, with chartering in mind. It worked! And you are right. what ever it takes, GO NOW. My first live aboard cruising boat was an S&S 26. Lived aboard and cruised it for 6 yrs.

I've been binge watching your channel. I love your content and editing style! Your content is fairly different from other sailing channels, i love the photography and spear fishing. Your story is so unique as well, your boat is (from what i've seen at least) something that most people would NOT consider buying for full time cruising. You've given so much great stuff on how you've improved it. I think it kind of proves that as long as the hull is solid, put enough work in and you can cruise in any boat small or big. I own a 46-footer for last 7 years. It is an old boat from 1977 but I have improved it dramatically and now it has everything - full authonomy on water and electricity, freezer, all comfort of a home including an icemaker. Did cost me some money but considering how cheap I bought it, it is still way beyond market cost. we spend every summer on bard and I would like to move to the boat permanently. I feel so much better on the boat than on the land.

Man, that was helpful. I have planned this for years but can't till my senior rescue dog has her promises kept. Yes, going simple and small. I'll cruise my boat in the Florida Key. She has a 4 inch draft with leeboards with one sail and no motor. Two nine foot oars and not being in a hurry. I have had five years aboard at a lake marina while working a full time job and several small cruises. I love saltwater cruising. It a complete life full of wonder and danger. Out of all the sailing videos, what I like the best about your videos is your humility and showing newbies how it can be done. Starting simple small and doing it to start off with is great advice, then build up. Have you looked into alternative fuels like hydrogen to run the motor?
@handroids1981
@handroids1981 Жыл бұрын
Hello. I'm not Dan, perhaps he will answer. Unfortunately hydrogen is ... some far way off being an option. Very, very far off. That I know of it's been a "just around the corner" possibility since the 90s. All sailing vessels are eagerly waiting for the lithium replacement. As lithium is STUPID HEAVY. Generally an electric cars weight is about those thirds its batteries. Weight is the enemy of all sail craft. I hope that helps.

Amazing. The one thing I would worry about is going to sleep and waking up to a storm that can topple my vessel over. The other thing I would suggest is if you can manage the space and means you could probably set up an aquarium fish farm and store fish there. Buy a gallon of fish food and you can have ready to eat fish in there. Of course you won't raise the fish too long because aquariums can get clogged up with poop and get dirty, you can just use the sea water to replace the water. But it's just a thought in case you want to spruce it up.

We tried the sprouts while sailing in the Bahamas, but they all rotten in the heat. Lack of veggie is one the thing that got us to come back earlier, my wife got a sun allergy from too much sun and not enough green veg. Be careful with the sun, skin cancer is the sailor disease.

Love this, subscribed! Ever been to Harbour Island, Bahamas? I spearfish from there every year around New Years. Would love to meet up sometime! It’s a great place to ring in the new year as well! I’ve also got a dock, would have to see if it’s big enough for your boat though 😂

boat life is so diverse that it is difficult to explain. when you mentioned 100 of dollars per night for a marina i thought about the 200? 300? 400? dollar per YEAR i pay on the member sailclub in Linköping. of course if you go to stockholm or göteborg then it jumps to several 1000s per year for a summer / winter spot, which starts to get closer to the hotel price per night you mentioned. and yes there are marinas of different kinds (ie: the opera spot in göteborg) that also get to several 10s of dollars per night in Sweden.

I hope to carry out this one day. I'm a 16-year-old with a low wage job at Shoppers Drug Mart, but I believe that if I save up enough money say, $6000 cad or enough to purchase a good sailboat, I will do so. The only issue is how I'll make money if I stay on the sailboat. Do you work from home or have another source of income that keeps you worry free? Another concern is how to determine the quality of a boat when you have little to no experience with them?

I designed and built our 1200 watt solar system similar to yours. I am also an avid kiter for 20 years, we are also KZbinrs with an rv channel, small 24k sub channel. Had starlink for 8 months, love it love to crew with u someday, love the videos. Larry
