Das kommt leider hin und wieder vor. There is nothing wrong with trying to lose a strong foreign accent when speaking English, as generally it will make you far more understandable to both native and non-native speakers alike. a certain amount of an accent can be charming (as long as the pronunciation is correct): I personally like French and Russian accents. But the danger is when the accent distorts the meaning of words: I'm thinking of Peter Sellers in the Pink Panther talking about a 'bemb'.

I just wanted to mention one thing regarding the 'er' section. if you were speaking to someone from the north east of England then you would pronounce it 'mista' and not 'mister' - not sure if Germans just naturally speak our northern way in English or if we copied English speaking Germans in our way of talking :)

+Geordie Si Well we should learn British English but our books mix up the American and British English. So that's not really helpful if you want to know the difference between the British and American English. And we don't speak in a northern way, it's completely different. We just pronounce the 'er' in German like an 'a'. It's not 'Fernseher' (TV), it's more like 'Fernseha'.

Robert Bert Ja, da stimme ich dir ebenfalls zu. Mit amerikanischem akzent klingt man schnell wie ein hysterischen college girl. Stichwort: 'Awesome'. Meine lieblingsserien kommen aus England, kuck mal was auf den BBC sendern so an comedy läuft. Ist definitiv ziemlich unter der gürtellinie und hefitger als deutsche comedy in jeder hinsicht. It's so easy to do accents of other countries in your native tongue but to do accents of another location in a second or third language is just amazing. The more I'm learning German, the more I'm learning other ways of speaking it but I lived in Otterbach and the german there is super weird to begin with haha but wish me luck :)

Mein Englisch ist ja leider nicht besonders gut und da müsste ich noch stark dran arbeiten. Aber Deine Tipps sind gold richtig, man sollte dann wirklich viele Filme in org. engl. gucken, weil mit dem "Schulenglisch" kommt man nicht weit. Learned a few words from my grandparents while they were still living and took 2 German courses in high school, but that was oh so long ago. es gibt mehrere hundert deutsche synchronsprecher (; ich würde zum englisch trainieren übrigens sogar noch eher serien, die sich va drinnen abspielen empfehlen, wie How I met Your Mother zb, weil der ton da irgendwie besser ist als bei vielen filmen und die leute auch nicht so zum nuscheln neigen. und weil hier ein zwei leute meinten, dass du tatsächlich einen englischen akzent bekommen hast. also ich würde wetten, dass man, wenn man es nicht wüsste, von ganz wenigen kleinen fehlern abgesehen nie darauf kommen würde, dass du wohl vor allem englisch sprichst. einen akzent hast du wirklich nicht. wär übrigens cool zu wissen, ob du dich anders fühlst jenachdem welche sprache du grad sprichst. verschiedene sprachen sollen ja bei einigen menschen unterschiedliche aspekte ihrer persönlichkeit mehr zum vorschein bringen. naja, danke für deine tollen videos. Lost... Nice title for a great video! I wouldn't be able to tell if you've lost your german because i don't understand german ( i really apreciated your subtitles!) but if it's anything like having a word (in the language you're learning )that comes to mind for another (from your native language) it would make sense to me. It happens to me exactly when i would have wished it didn't wich lead to the most akward situations sometimes. This little bugs are so annoying, often i wonder if i'm losing my native language... it's a shame german have such a bad reputation. i'm still hearing people making fun of it and saying it's the worst language in the world when i'm sure sometimes they've never heard the real language. Most of the time they've heard a caricature and that's enough for them to spread their ignorance. German sounds great to me. French also have its detractors.Apparently in other countries it sounds "dumb", "retarded", etc. Like someone said:"people will always be people". It's funny, we also have about 8 persons to dub movies and tv shows ! It was a national tragedy when they've decided to change the dubbers for three of the main characters in the tv serie Friends. I guess that is another good argument in favour of VOST. I feel like when you've tried the original language with subtitiles once, it's hard to come back to the dubbing. So many things pass trough the language , not to mention that sometimes it's difficult , especially in comedy, to adapt the "flow" of a joke in other laguages. I think british and American comedy is part of what made me want to learn english ( i love to smile). I'm getting better every day and i can vouch for you secret tips! they've also worked for me! (i can't really say for english highschools but it seems logical and for those who didn't have the oportunity like me , i have a secret tip too... if i may... i find out that i was reading a lot of things in english while browsing the internet and i thought that maybe reading the article and else out loud would help me improve my accent (the enlish accent is particulary difficult when you speak french( i think the pronounciations are too different) and reading out loud works for me!(Probably , like you've said,the exaustion of passing from one language to another). Well sometimes i get some baffled looks ... but it's worth it! You have an incredible accent in english (it's inspiring) but what impresses me the most is the amout af vocabulary you master! Probably more than a lot of native speakers i would dare say. It was really interesting to learn about the differences in pronounciation beteween german and english (the cat would work in french too!) This comment is turning into a novel and the chocolate addict that i'am is hearing some gentlemen chocolate... and it's calling with a delicious accent! ;) ps: other secret tip for language learners out there: writing long comment helps a lot (but only the nice ones...)

That is intriguing how you speak German for the whole video. I am curious about German. I am glad there was subtitles so I can understand what you are saying. I noticed that the short a sound in English can vary by accent. Americans have their "a" sound. The British have more of a "ah" sound. It is hard to describe in writing.

Gutes Video :) aber deine Tipps sind sehr auf amerikanisches englisch bezogen. Ich bin deutsch aber in Südengland aufgewachsen und im britischen hört man zB bei "mister" und "minister" das r am Ende nicht. Und auch das r in der MItte zum beispiel in "word" hört man bei mir nicht.. keine Kritik an deinem Video, du sagst ja ausdrücklich dass du amerikanisch sprichst! Nur als kleine Anmerkung für andere zuschauer vielleicht ;)

Gosh I wish I was taught German then I could have been fluent. I'm quarter German myself so I felt my Grandmother should have taught my mother more German. :(
