This is just how i’m currently feeling and things are on the up now. I’m now striving to find a way to pursue KZbin more and figure out visa stuff. I think the school life isn’t for me, but there are so many people who enjoy it and can either dedicate all their time to it or go on a more relaxed program. (my next video is about a company who can help you find the right language school thats best for you). Also there are more visa opportunities than what i mentioned, you just have to look and work really hard to find them.
ANYWAY the big message is: I’m gonna be changing some things. Much love to you all, and don’t let what im saying discourage you in any way when it comes to Japan and school. If you want something, fight for it and do your best and you can achieve it. Love to all of you!
(I'm rewatching the video and blep. I can see how i look like i'm just whining a lot, I know there are so many people out there who are working harder than me and have it tougher. I'm just trying to say personally this is my limit haha ok ok im donebye)

"anyway, I'm hungry. I kinda wanna go home so I can eat.. but then I need to buy vegetables. Ugh being an adult is like rough. You have to just keep cooking all the time and then you wash up and then you cook some more." I relate to this so much LOL sorry your going through a hard time, its important to have a break no matter what. Your mind will explode otherwise, stay strong, hopefully when your bf comes over things will improve :) good luck x

People have different thresholds for what constitutes as a hard time and what makes people unhappy. They are all valid, allowed to feel that way, and are allowed to vent and feel better so they can move forward and overcome them.

HEY!! Your not whining, your expressing how your feeling and struggles etc. I'm a soldier in the army and I stumbled on your channel and been watching it ever since and it has been amazing! I've always wanted to go to japan and study but I won't ever get a chance and I'm fine with that. I get a look thru a small window and see you and how things are down there and that helps me see how things kinda are down there. keep your head up and stay positive! your fans are here to lift you up whenever you need us.

Don't be hard on yourself. You are doing so much better for yourself than I am currently and I am in my 30's. I am in a terrible job that I hate with little to no other options. I am slowly getting myself into stuff that will lead me to better options but I feel like it's so late in the game or I could be doing more. I think you are doing great for your age,you are working hard and living in a country I can't see myself visiting until I am too old to truly enjoy it (Japan is my dream travel destination)

I feel ya Emma, school was definitely not easy! I was like you in the beginning but I stopped after 6 months, I’m sure you remember my frustration haha, in the end I did the bare minimum and sent more time on fun. But yeah working in Japan is even less easy :/ happy I still have the working holiday option but that will only last me a year as well hnnnnn! Keep fighting for that visa! Or do whatever makes you happy

Why purposely fail tests to go down a level? Can't you just admit to your teacher that you don't feel you're excelling in the coarse you're in and just ASK to go down a level? I'm sure it would be less stressful.

I'm also trying to figure it out some life stuff on my own and is taking me years (over 2 so far) and I'm 17! My life is calming down now and I'm being able to think a little clearer. One thing I'm trying to see is if I'll be able to go to Japan next year as an 18th birthday present!( you're not discouraging me so don't worry 😂) I always thought pf how calming and active the country can be and how beautiful too. It would be a good place to get my head in place and think what to do. I haven't been going to school since 2016 due to me getting too anxious to stay in a room full of people for hours everyday . I also had family problems. But things are starting to get in place really slow , but one thing I learned in this past 3 years is DON'T RUSH! I tought i was good to go back to school (as my psychiatrist said) but I wasn't. They rushed me and it made me go to square one again. So take your time to figure things out, ok?

that's what i'm thinking. it's awesome to be able to experience the city for a bit, but once it starts to get stressful and weigh on your emotional state, it's time to find a place out of the city. she might have to wait until school's over, though.

Being an adult is tough, man. I'm 30 and I still don't know what I want or how to get what I do want and all of that. Literally, we just kinda fake it till we make it. My early 20s were very hard, trying to find my way in the world, learning about who I am, etc. You're exactly where everyone else is at your age, and you are not alone! You are sweet and bright and you have the drive! You can do it!! ❤️ Hang in there and don't stress if you don't have all the answers. Anyone who says they do is a liar. ;)

Honestly just hang in there! It’s so hard in the beginning but you can do it. I feel like the biggest struggle is just getting used to the workload and once you get in the rhythm it really evens out. What I do is I just do all of my homework the weekend before classes start and then I can relax more throughout the week.

I REALLY appreciate you posting this video and I'm glad to see you're feeling better (from your recent comment). :) I've never lived abroad (though I've traveled solo and did take an immersion Japanese class that left me crying everyday in frustration). I can relate to feeling done with adulting and feeling like I don't know what the hell I'm doing. What you're doing is amazing and takes a lot of courage. I have a lot of anxiety issues for wanting to be a perfectionist in order to achieve “success”. But what is success? Is success really getting great grades, but being mentally unhealthy and not enjoying life? It’s hard to prioritize having a good time when society keeps telling us the right thing is to work/study all the time to make more money/better grades. But deep down we know living an unhappy, stressed life is pointless and we’ll regret it.

I relate to this so much! I was on a scholarship and was studying at a university in Japan but in the end I had to go back home because my mental health was getting so bad that it was starting to affect my physical health as well. And it wasn't like I was failing, I was doing pretty good but I'm sort of like you in the way that I'm really hard on myself. So if I'm not up to my own standards I get really frustrated and down. I'm still really appreciative of the experience I had though but studying or working in Japan can be so tough!

This really spoke to me. I had a very similar experience as a uni exchange student in Tokyo - the pressure, the constant must-be-perfect tests, never quite feeling relaxed, all of it. Do what you need to do to look after yourself. At my lowest point, I went to Okinawa for a weekend just to get out of the city for a bit and breathe. Maybe even consider transferring language schools to a city with a less intense lifestyle - in hindsight, that's what I should've done. At the end of the day, work out what you need to do to look after yourself and follow that gut instinct. Japan is a wonderful place and I will always love it, but it can and will wear you down.

I don’t know how but somehow feel like despite being on the other side of the planet (England) I’m always in a similar mood/confusion/uncertainty as you. I don’t know, maybe it’s just being 22, but I’m sending some love 💛💛💛 Don’t be hard on yourself but also don’t be too slack on yourself either, it’s trying to get a good mix of both (I think, who knows). I’m hopefully heading to Kyoto next year to study Japanese, I lived in Kyoto for a year on a working holiday visa from March 2015 to May 2016 and I’ve been dying to be back since. Your videos always remind me how much I love it there and how much the pain of getting visas will eventually be worth it! Anyway, if you end up reading this then just know if you want another 22 year old buddie to chat to about all the feels, then please message me 💛✨💛✨

I've been watching your videos for over a year, and I watched them up until I moved to Japan myself (for a full year), and because of things you are precisely saying I'm back home. As an American, we don't have the working visa option, so you're incredibly (!!!) lucky to have lived the life you have lived this past year and a half. I also recognized Japan was very enjoyable, but because of my job I couldn't enjoy it to the fullest and I almost started resenting living in Japan. I often look back on my videos and my photos now, and I wish I could have enjoyed my free time (when I had it) more, but I was constantly tied down and being suffocated by my job. So I guess what I'm trying to say is.. be thankful for what you've had, and do your best to move forward. Kudos to you if you make it through and can be truly happy, but I think it's also important to accept that Japan is an overworked society and to not separate the good parts of Japan from the bad, accept it as a whole.

ah i feel a loooot like this too. i wake at 6am or earlier, drag myself to two hour+ classes until 4pm, then come home to do 3+ hours of homework and assignments. it's terrible that most school systems are designed this way now. i'm merely in high school (secondary school), but everything i do is always pressured to be some kind of important step to get into uni and towards your desired career. it sucks that i have to sacrifice my social life, my mental health, and honestly, my overall well being just to focus on school. let's hope it'll get better for the both of us! soon we'll be out of school and not have to deal with this mundane routine. hope you get plenty of rest soon love. :) x

This video actually really helped me to not feel like I am totally crazy. I have been living in Japan for 8 months on study abroad, and I AM THE EXACT SAME WAY. My Japanese teacher only gives us about 3-4 tests per week, but I feel as though I am constantly cramming and not understanding as well as I could, and I feel like an idiot to say the least. I want to learn more, I want to improve, I want to be fluent in Japanese some day... but sometimes I feel so discouraged. Japanese IS difficult and honestly I feel like I cannot catch a break. For so long I was feeling like there was something wrong with me because I am always so overwhelmed and have not seemed to fully adjust even after 8 months, but just listening to you talk your feelings out helped me feel like I am not alone, because I truly am feeling THE SAME WAY. So, thank you for that! I wish you the best in all your endeavors and hope that things become less stressful. From one anxious foreigner living in Japan to another, YOU GOT THIS.

It sounds like you just don't fit with the community. Even if you do make it through school, you're stuck in the same workforce you don't enjoy. Liking the culture and being the culture are totally different, so maybe Japan just isn't the place for you. I do enjoy these videos, and I probably wouldn't care if you lived somewhere else. Quit school, move, health is much more important than learning. We love you! Keep it up.

Jacob Jones yeah if you don't like the work culture then Japan is just not for you. Sadly a lot of people only see Japan through the anime lens thinking it's some mystery country full of wonder. I mean, it is a beautiful place but maybe it's time to think that it's a better place for a holiday rather than living.

I know you love being in Japan, but I really appreciate you keeping it real. Living abroad is hard all the time, but it's even more difficult when the language and culture is so different.

Hi Emma, I really like how you articulate your feelings on how to go about getting a visa and living in Japan. I have had/am having similar experiences and feel similar frustrations. I have been learning Japanese for 8ish years including studying at Saitama Uni and am not at N1 fluency (I still feel so far from it) but will get there one day. What you are doing is awesome and I love watching how you go about your life in Tokyo. I find it such a shame that creativity is not encouraged in Japan the way it is in Aus. You are an amazing gaijin :D

You always do very thoughtful videos. I like that lippy color on you. Good luck getting school sorted. Four hours a day in a foreign language sounds really tough. I took French all through jr high, high school and college, and I took Portuguese in college, so I know one hour a day in a language is taxing, much less four!

I worked at NOVA Eikawa for a couple of years before their collapse and then at a small private company for another year. Great time, great experience but I did enter that head space about learning Japanese. It's fun, you feel like you're learning a lot until you reach a certain point and suddenly learning the language becomes overwhelming and you think to yourself "I'm in Japan. I study all day, everyday. I'm not having fun". At this point I stopped studying hard and just lived. Suddenly the stress levels came down. 10/10 would eat convience store bentos for dinner again! Enjoy your Kentucky Christmas

Despite dealing with different things, I really feel you! There's so much being expected from me these days and I'm giving myself such a hard time by not wanting to deliver any less than 100%. I'm honestly overwhelmed. It's good to hear you talk about it and still be positive :) inspires me to reconsider my own situation. Thank you & stay strong! :)

Pro-Tip: If you want to work and live in Japan, work for a western company! The only exception for Japanese companies would be NTT DOCOMO (specifically Ventures - used to work there) and/or NTT Group (only R&D) department. They are more westernized and much higher salaries. (Softbank works as well but once again depends on the department.) And generally it's good to come in with an engineering degree of some sort. Visas are indirectly granted based on the value you provide to the workforce. (Also it's good to know conversational level Japanese.) Edit: This is purely based off of my experience and interviews across various companies in Japan.

I'd like to go to Japan, but I'm minoring in Spanish and should probably go to Spanish speaking country. Anyway I things'll get better for both of us I'm sure :)

20's are so hard. So many transitions and so many stalemates. When nothing is happening and you get the urge to cram for a new plan instead take a minute and get comfortable in the stillness. When times are slow its when we learn the most(in hindsight). I promise you will live the life you want! In the mean time be good to your body and mind- wear comfortable clothing, exercise everyday and do one thing to set yourself up for success for the next day. Look up "no zero days". Best!

Came from the 8m2 apartment video lol, I was like "wowowowowow" 8ft2 is so small. Crazy lol. Anyways hi :) In order to succeed fully whether in a foreign country like Japan or even your own country you need to find relaxation time. I know and understand it's difficult to keep up grades, exams and stuff. Failing sucks but don't try to get into that habit, trust me. I'm failing in second year university in Canada lol but I enjoy people's company and such as well as my own. I would love to be a free-bird without restraints but that's not an absolute possibility. Be strong :) You got this!

I know I'm nothing but a stranger on the internet, but I'd always be happy to meet up to practice Japanese with you! I'm in Tokyo until the middle of next year on exchange, and I'm always looking for more opportunity to practice the Japanese I'm learning. I also feel that being able to use what you're learning (instead of cramming it constantly) helps, so I find speaking with people really makes a different as well. Anyway, good luck with your studies!! Learning Japanese is no easy feat for sure :(

It is really weird how we haven't met and living totally different lives but your words is really similar to my confusions. I'm not even sure if I can handle the things I wanna achieve, not only in the forward 10 years etc but also now, this week, this month.. I try to stay positive and try to look from positive side haha you know. And about all housework and more, I feel you like I want to stop this adulthood :D , I hope everything would be great (couldn't find the right word) for both of us. Take care Emma!

It can be a big bummer and downer when we think of ourselves as the same skill level as someone and they surpass our skills seemingly exponentially. It is a big blow. I was 5 years old and my sister was 7 when we started acrobatics on the same exact day. She made the team the following day. It took me 2 years to make the team and the only reason I made it is because some girl quit and her partner needed someone fast and I had been in the kid’s class the longest... I felt so mediocre and that stuck with me for a long time. I know it’s not the same exact thing but I wanted to give my story to show you that I know it can feel pretty shitty to have someone you are close to surpass you and sort of leave you behind.

As an asian what you described feels normal to me but i understand from a western point of view. I studied Japanese for 4 years and is still currently studying. Just this year i took 2 weeks off from work and just went to Japan to study full time Japanese language and oh gosh it's pretty tiring. If you feel like studying everyday is too much for you go for part-time lessons (1-2 times a week) i feel you will absorb and learn better.

I totally get you. I've been in a university since October and sometimes it's really hard for me to even go to classes. I kinda feel bad because of this, cause it just sounds as if I were lazy, not depressed. I think there are people who can't really do 9 to 5 and it's all right. Just because most people say ,,this way is correct" it doesn't mean it's truth.
