Hi everyone! In this video I briefly mention that I prefer language projects over language goals. If that's something you're interested to learn more about, there's now a whole video about language projects where I also share the template for my Language bucket list in Notion: kzbin.info/www/bejne/injWZKusiqh_ppI ✨

Learn languages advice - Don't start two languages at the same time - Settting priorities, how much time do you want to spent in every language - Pick your languages style and what work for you - Define your goal for the language - Schedule my study session - Search for a course or something like that - Set some projects for every language - Don't forget any of your languages

Incorrect you can learn two languages at the same time as long as they are not similar languages ie Spanish and Potuguese, Dutch and German etc.

The two students’ race In order to better illustrate what I mean by “managing one’s time,” here’s a story I call “The Two Students’ Race.” Two students (both Italian) decide to compete for a challenging and ambitious goal: learning ten foreign languages. The judges give them a ten year “time budget,” and the rest is up to them. Student A decides that he will pick up two languages every two years. He starts by learning English and Spanish. At the end of the two years, he picks up French and German. While learning French and German, he enjoys conversing with native speakers in both English and Spanish, languages he now speaks with a certain level of fluency. He also loves reading books. By the end of the fourth year, he is relatively fluent in German and French, so he starts learning Portuguese and Swedish. At the same time, he moves to Pariswhere he gets the chance to use the four languages he learned and continue to actively learn Portuguese and Swedish. At the beginning of the sixth year, he decides to learn Mandarin and Romanian. Two years later, he finally picks up Japanese and Dutch. Then ten years later, when time is up, he speaks English, Spanish, French, and German fluently; Portuguese, Swedish, Mandarin and Romanian well; and Japanese and Dutch decently. He has weak languages, but he reached the admirable goal of building a core in more than five languages. Moreover, he will never forget these five languages. He could get rusty in them, but they will quickly come back to him.

Learning several languages at a time is a very, very bad idea. I'm talking from own experience. Learn just one language at a time. Learn it till 6000 words (that will be B2 I suppose) and start a new language. I'm excluding English from it, because English is that important you need to learn English entire life.

Loving your channel! I'm studying both Ukrainian and French, however French has been mostly lots of conversation practice. As for now, I'm gonna try to just reach advanced levels on both languages and then I can move to another language. I feel like social media helps me a lot to maintain them, with English I don't study it anymore (besides some mandatory lessons at my job) but I consume a lot of content. Great content, Tanya. Loving your channel! I am also studying 6 languages, 3 of them are languages that I studied at school 20yrs ago and 1 I studied while living abroad 12 years ago. Much of the learning has been reviving things I used to know so the learning has been quick. And in 2 of the 4 I have managed to get to a higher level than I used to be! I started Arabic dialect learning last year and this year started European Portuguese. I can really relate with the way you learn languages, it’s intensive and passionate and at times chaotic but the spurts in few languages at a time bring proggress and don’t get boring. Looking forward to seeing more of your content ❤️

Very sound advice. I'm currently learning 3 languages, and am doing so very close to your method, 3 hrs per day devoted to these languages, 1 hr. each: 1) KOREAN is totally new to me (but I already speak Japanese C2+ and am at a upper-intermediate, B2, level of Chinese), my "project" is to take TOPIK 1 this year and finish TY Korean Stories 2) CHINESE, which I have been studying off and on for more than 20 years but I'm finally getting more confident and comfortable with. I'm planning on taking HSK5 this year. My Projects are short-term study trip to Taiwan, HSK5, and read 20+ books (graded readers) 3) ITALIAN, my third Romance language after Spanish and French, so it is relatively easy for me. I have Assimil's Perfectionnement, so I'm now studying Italian via French. Projects include finishing that textbook and reading 10+ graded readers (I've read four already). 4) My problem is not having time to maintain my other languages: namely Spanish, French and German - all which are B2 level, so I'm not that worried about it, but it would be nice to consume more content in those languages. Japanese is my language of work and life so I don't lack for any opportunity there.

From that I went to Arabic Hindi and Chinese mostly because they were completely different from Roman based languages. Hey there, first of all, the video production is fantastic! I also really like overall pace of the video. My native language is also Russian. I've learned English just by watching KZbin and playing video games for 5 years. This lazy method allowed me to acquire English to about C1 level and actually make content and hang out with people. And now I'm doing the same thing with French :). I think the hardest part about learning multiple languages is actually NOT to learn them all at the same time but to niche down to one specific language and focus on it for the next whatever-you-decide amount of time. Coz I'm also in love with Polish and Japanese and it's soooo tough to not switch my attention to them. As for advice about language learning: Immersion is key. You can never ever speak or write in your target language but watch and consume as much of it as you can and eventually you'll start outputting naturally. "Refold" (A language learning program made by Matt vs Japan) is also a great source of understanding how language learning actually works. If you don't know anything about language learning I definitely recommend to start with this one.

Just clicked on the video. I want to learn more languages. I think learning languages are great for self development. When I jear a beautiful language I can't help myself, I want to learn it. I know Azerbaijani (it's my native language) , English abd Turkish. I plan on learning new languages and I would like to share my plan. Now I'm working on my German skills and after 4 month I'll start learning Russian alongside German. I actually understand it because everyone in my family speaks it and I've been hearing it all my life so it's not a completely new language. So many people know it here and I feel ignorant since I don't know it well. Then I plan on learning Spanish (in 2025-2026). Again it's also not a new language for me I've been a fan of this language since I'm a kid abd it's not veey hard to understand for me. I love it very much and everything about Spanish makes me feel home. I love every single thing about this language. I tried learning it before but that year I had to take university entrance exam so I stopped. After I'm done with Russian and German hopefully I'll be able to learn beautiful Spanish 🩷 Then I wish to be fluent in Korean. A reason for this is because I started learning it years ago for fun thanks to my love for K-pop and kdramas. I stopped at some point again because of my laziness and I regret stopping because I was way younger back then and I believe it's way easier learning languages as a kid. My wish is to be fluent on these languages. Thanks for reading this far

This was great. I am for sure that person that has to study multiple languages at one time. But putting space in between them is a must for the sake of not burning myself out. I have a bad habit of overwhelming myself at times. I decided to just focus on Spanish for now and a will pick back up on my Japanese in a few months. I will start another one later on this year. I was studying greek for awhile, but stopped, but I will go back to it. But having goals for each language is good, because some don't necessarily need to be for speaking.

What I find works well for me is having one main language that I study everyday, and two others that I alternate every other day with. Once I reach a satisfying level in the main one, I will move it to maintenance mode, then bring another one to the forefront, with two others I alternate with. If I study only one language all the time I will burn out. It's interesting how we are all different in that respect. :)

Thank you for your sharing and these inspirational videos. I watched many videos of your Russian channel to learn Russian and I just found your English channel, your English is really great, just sounds like a native American 👍 I'm a native Cantonese speaker who is fluent in Korean, Japanese and Mandarin. As a language lover I'm also learning 6 languages at a time, they're Russian, Vietnamese, Turkish, English, Spanish and Taiwanese Hokkien. Last year, I focused on only one language for 1~3 months, and then moved to another, but from this year, I've been learning 6 languages everyday because I'm trying to find which method works for me😺 I also dabbled in some languages such as Hindi, Thai, Indonesian, Georgian... etc. In the future I also want to learn Polish when I get B2 level in Russian, using the "laddering" method 💪 Русский является самым сложным языком среди языков, которые я до сих пор учила. 😥

I love your channel 🥰 anyway.. I'm italian and I usually use English to study others languages. I'm improving French and I'm learning Russian from scratch... but you know.. I find it so difficult.... 😊 I love improve languages by listening... usually I do French grammar exercises on Duolingo and I usually use Busuu for Russian. I'm trying to use French to study Russian too... at the end of next summer I'd like to add Spanish to my list but 'd like to achieve a good level in French first before doing that!💪🏻👍🏻🤞🏻🤩

I am planning to make a video in Spanish soon, but to be honest, I am a little torn when it comes to making those "polyglot speaks X languages" videos (if that's what you meant). I don't focus on conversational fluency, so i feel like a video of me speaking all of my languages without preparation would be a torture to watch. I could, however, write a script and memorize it, but then it wouldn't be representative of my actual level 🤷‍♀️

I don't believe that you are slowing down your progress if you focus on more than one language. You're only reducing the time for dedicating yourself to only one language. However, you might distract your efficiency if you are learning more languages from scratch that are similar. I had that issue long time ago when I used to learn French, Italian and Latin at the same time...Great video, Tanya!😊

much like you, I also study languages primarily for consuming media (in my case, literature) so it's not as urgent for me to make fast progress. I don't like the idea of trying to talk to someone with a very low level in a foreign language so I try to learn very quickly in languages I'm going to be actively SPEAKING. but I can translate a word with a dictionary if I'm just reading. that's how I can justify studying multiple languages at once. 😊 also, I find studying multiple languages at once a way to not get burnt out by switching things up all the time!

I’ve heard the advice that you should avoid similar languages if you don’t want to just study one and I get that you will confuse them but at the same time the huge problem of just acquiring new vocabulary would be alleviated if you can cheat and just make words sound French or Spanish etc.
