As a DC native, yes, there are mosquitos everywhere and Ive hated them forever. There isn't enough bug spray in the stores but its sort of a tradeoff cause of all the lovely foliage we have as you've noticed.

Having lived in DC, the mosquito issue also depends on which way the wind is blowing. If it's blowing up from the tidal basin, South, se, sw, they are worse. Breeze from the northerly winds help keep them down a bit.

DC is partially reclaimed swamp land.. and bugs love humidity! I lived in DC 27 years and got bit more there than where I live now, South Florida! I also stop lots and can't drive straight through! You two should do a little VA wine country weekend drive... It's beautiful this time of year. Linden Vineyards is a favorite, great venison sausage charcuterie plate. I know you're a Cali girl, but there are some decent vineyards lol.

For road trip snacks, I love Strawberry Twizzlers and Ritz Thin and Crispy Sour Cream and Onion! And would think that with mosquito's, would think NYC may not have to many with all the concrete, but I could be wrong, even with the water! North Dakota and Montana are bad with them, at least when I lived there. Illinois can be as well, but they must not like me here!! LOL

Mosquito’s don’t like Lavender or Vodka. You can buy essential oil’s and run a defuser using lavender. Put a few droplets on your bed, the door when you go to bed and the window seal. Last dryer sheets on your person and put a few between the bedsheets. Target 🎯 has a Lavender spray that I wipe by bedroom down with. I don’t live in DC, I live in CA but mosquitoes love me!

Technically speaking DC is considered part of neither north nor south but right smack in the middle of both, but as far as swamps go and mosquitoes that love them I’ve lived in upstate NY and there is marshy land in some areas and mosquitoes there too and they’ve bitten me to my dismay :( I still would never consider DC to be in the south though
