In this video I show how I made a drag lure for my hawk. Making a drag lure was a lot more fun than just buying one, and it is going to be an important aspect of building fitness with my hawk.
I used a hare pelt from a hare I fed to the birds and as I have never done this before I enjoyed earning along the way!

I think you did a great job of making your lure, not easy sawing anything. I personally like making equipment, although we can buy many things it’s rewarding , I even made bells out of sheet copper and brass during the moult.

Hi. Good video. If you sew unworked leather, it will be torn at the sewing site later. I'm afraid to use glue - chemicals. Have a nice day

Hi, I have a shed, about 400 square feet that I intend to turn into a mews. I have been working with other people’s birds of prey for a while and have also been keeping reptiles, fish, game birds and a hornbill for 6 years. I think I am ready to get my first bird of prey and I’m debating between a common buzzard and a Eurasian eagle owl. The mews provides lots of space for flying and I am currently in the process of adding adequate ventilation and perching. There are very few falconers in my area and none are taking apprenticeships so I will not be able to actually practice the sport although I am still interested in keeping one and working with it. I noticed you keep both owls and buteos and was wondering what you think is best for my situation.

It depends what you want to achieve with the bird, an owl and a buzzard are very different with how they are raised and how they fly, are there no falconry centres near by you could do some volunteering at?

@@MercerFalconry I have volunteered at a native wildlife center for about a month. They did have some birds there but they where unfortunately mostly red tail hawks and peregrines. I did work with one saw whet owl there for a limited time. The main thing I am trying to achieve is a bird that I can train to fly to the glove and I can watch in the mews. Of course I will use telemetry for any time the bird is out of the mews.

While it’s good you are going out to try and gain experience I don’t think a wildlife centre will give you the experience you need, you need to find a falconry/ bird of prey experience

I believe they eat a lot of insects on the wing, but a standard bird of prey diet will suffice, if you are unsure what that would consist of then you shouldn’t have the bird in your possession!
