Thanks! I made the cutting board for the same person that I made this chess board for last year (kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6GmqqWOnNdoiLM), so I figured I'd put together a video to show how I went about doing it.

I really appreciate channels like yours where you're creating beautiful, professional pieces in a shop that seems designed for building things. You obviously have some nice equipment mixed in but it's nice to also see some tools like the Delta miter saw and lunchbox planer in there. Content that focuses on the art of building something rather than one big Festool & Sawstop ad. Love the videos I've learned a lot from you !
@Woodumakeit2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Yes, I try to be practical when acquiring tools and try not to go overboard with spending. For example, I use my miter saw primarily for rough cutting lumber, so I prioritized space saving vs. precision and that helped keep the cost down.

I'm new to woodworking, and I'm quite a bit in awe after watching this. I'm not ready by a long shot to make anything like it, but I'd love to be able to. I'm saving for a larger shed that I can turn into a shop, then my next purchase will be a sawstop. I'm just looking to have a small shop, though. I own a lot of hand tools, but as it is now, the only tools I have that I saw you use were the miter saw and random orbital sander. I can't do everything you're doing, but I love watching the process as you do it.
@unclebob87462 жыл бұрын
Sawstop is a great tablesaw. Save your fingers by being careful and safety aware whenever you work with tools that have sharp edges. Spend the money you save on not getting the Sawstop on a good drum sander. Woodworking involves a LOT of sanding! Best of luck.

Interesting piece. Only comments are maybe I will make one some day, but a lot of work. Probably a better gift than some thing to try to market. Also, for a finish for them, walnut oil is far better than mineral oil because after penetrating, it actually cures and hardens. Mineral oil never cures. There are a couple of brands made for wood bowls. Dr's Wood shop is one, Mike Mahoney's is another. Store bought walnut oil in the salad section isn't the same thing, some of it cures, some doesn't. The walnut oils are heat treated to break up the proteins that can cause nut allergies.

very cool. question about the thin strips. Are they face grain? Are all your pieces face grain to face grain? I am confused about putting face grain to edge on cutting boards. is that ok over time? I know not to ever mix end grain with face or edge but I can't get a definitive answer on face to edge glue ups. both long grain so should be ok?? anyway your boards are beautiful and definitely going to try one.
@Woodumakeit Жыл бұрын
Those thin pieces are end grain so that they expand and contract at the same rate as the rest of the board, with the glue applied only on the long grain. The difference between face grain and edge grain really depends on how the tree was cut, but it shouldn't make too much difference when gluing face grain to edge grain.
