I have made a number of end grain boards, two different patterns, for my family. A total of 9 boards. Mine is the only one that has been touched by a knife. All the others are on display in the various kitchens. I freaked one sister out when I had her board on the counter and asked her for a sharp knife. I wouldn't have actually done it, it's her board. I'm pleased they are so happy with them.

I absolutely LOVE this board and I’d love to try to replicate it as much as possible. I think I can get the dimensions of one of the boards when you put the tape measure up next to one of the boards. But even with relative dimensioning I can’t get the widths that make up the second board. You don’t know them do you? It would help me out a lot to recreate this whole cutting board. You are truly a craftsman.

Dude...you are doing some excellent work. Would love a video of your shop and the different things you have there. Loved to see you kid, dog, and the area surrounding your shop. Beautiful! One question. Never seen someone use the planer as a jointer the way you do. How "successful" is that technique for getting straight 90 degree sides? Thanks and keep up the fantastic work!
@thewoodplank4376
@thewoodplank4376 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words! My enviroment definitely lends itself to the work I produce, nature always keeps me connected and inspired! Ive had good luck using the planer as a jointer, I try and cut my strips a little long to allow for any snipe but otherwise its great way to get a clean edge. You just want to make sure your workpiece is close to 90 beforehand, and don't stick a wonky piece through, hope that helps and thanks for watching!!

Thoroughly enjoyed your video!! I’m just starting on my journey of woodworking. So much to learn for sure. Where does a beginner like myself find lumber for making these types of projects? My problem is finding seasoned wood. Should it be Kiln dried or can lumber be used that has been stacked for a period of time? Thanks for sharing this very impressive video.
@thewoodplank4376
@thewoodplank4376 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks John! With cutting boards you want to only use "hardwoods" like walnut, maple, cherry, and ash. I would do a google search of Harwood suppliers near you and see what comes up, the wood should always be kiln dried. The other option is to shop online, you can even order cutting board kits. All the best on your woodworking journey!!

For anyone asking for sizes of each board prior to gluing, I believe he is not saying because he probably doesn't want you to make the exact same one. It doesn't really matter anyway, you can make them any size and it will still turn out great, just difefrent. Once you make one, you will see what I mean. Then you can start to plan them so they turn out similar to what you have in your head.

It is really great piece of work, even some can say piece of art. It looks great and when you watch this you want to make something similar yourself. I have one small question: When you oiling the board do you reuse excess of the oil for next projects?
@thewoodplank4376
@thewoodplank4376 2 жыл бұрын
I reuse the oil until its all gone, endgrain boards do get thirsty. They act like a sponge and drink a lot of oil but whatever is leftover is used on the next one.

Hello Jacob, I've done wood working for 30+ years and have begun doing smaller projects (they are easier to move around) and really enjoy the work you do and the results you produce. I made the walnut and padauk end grain cutting board and it looked pretty good... until I added the mineral oil. The board turned VERY dark. I can now barely tell the difference between the two types of wood. Any suggestions as to what I did wrong? Thanks, Gary
@andypiszcz6583
@andypiszcz6583 Жыл бұрын
I had a similar problem years ago. I think it is the density or weight of the piece. Some walnut is heavy and dark and will turn darker with oil. Padauk can be heavy also, but if you get a little sap with it, it will be lighter in weight. Just my idea. Good luck with it.

One of my favorite combos is Paduak and maple together, great contrast! The bleed-over is a problem that I can relate too! My best advice is to sand with a little less pressure where those sections are, and gently hand sand to finish.

I just used Paduk for the first time as well. Lots of bleed over. I definitely agree with using less pressure. Also, I'm thinking of covering maple with painters after I sand it first (I'm experimenting with edge grain "Cleveland Browns" boards so my maple is straight down the middle so I can tape it off easily) then moving into the Paduk last. Not sure if it will help, but hoping so.

THANKS. Very Nice. I made a padouk cutting board and the padouk still rubs red on a cloth…is this normal?

is titebond 2 approved for use in food contact applications? I thought only the third one has such properties

beautiful work! watching your video, I noticed you use Titebond 2. Titebond 3 is more waterproof. just wondering why you don't use that product instead?

I use titebond 2 "dark" for all of my walnut boards, it hides any remaining glue lines. Tiebond 2 is water resistant (titebond 3 its "More" water resistant hence waterproof) According to Titebond's website food safe and can be used for cutting boards. I've never had one fail.
