Mike, Watched this video years ago and started making for the awesome women in my family. Wife got the first two, one of field stone and other from New York slate my buddy gave me. Next were aunts and cousins. So wish my mother was still around to give her one. My dad and brother were both masons and I worked summers with them as a tender so I can appreciate the hard work you do. Just a simple thanks for turning me on to this craft. The women love them. My wife asked me tonight to help her find a birdbath at Lowe’s tomorrow. I told her, “ instead of buying some plastic garbage, let’s build something we can take pride in” so this video helped me convince even myself to start the build. Mike, thank you for all of your videos and expertise. Im making an uncle Joe birdbath as a Christmas gift. Following your technique with a couple differences. Im in Southern California so Im using stones from the beach. They tend to be rounder and smooth with lots of colors, designs and sizes because they came from all over to end up here. Also, i used an old head from a 22” bass drum for my form. The bottom base will be a 16” tom tom head. Ive never made anything with concrete before but im pretty crafty with most everything so thanks to your old school teaching methods, im learning alot. Figured the uncle Joe birdbath would be a great project for a first go. So far I have the top done and it looks great! Working on the bottom today. Thanks again.

Thanks for the reply. I'm having a heck of a time finding a barrel with a lid. Lots of burn barrels.....no lid. Could you tell me what is the diameter of the top of the barrel/your birdbath? Any suggestions on where/what type of place to get a used barrel with lid? It looks great cuz the barrel seems like a good height, too, so you don't break your back bending down. I'm pretty excited to find your birdbath here. Thanks so much for making the effort to do a youtube. You've touched my heart.

Hi Mike from England, I hope that you are well. I made one of your uncle Jo style birdbaths last spring and it’s still going strong during the last few winter months of frost and snow. I wish I could of added a photograph for you to see it, but everyone’s impressed by my DIY. (I used 3 large metal L brackets that I cemented at the top of the base column, then I balanced the top of the bath on these. I did this so I didn’t have to drill) Keep safe and thank you for helping me, and giving me the confidence to make my lovely bird bath. Julie 😊

Surprised you did not include reinforcing in the rock layers, must not be needed. I'm in Kansas and will use found stones maybe other stuff. Thank you for the video. I just ordered some solar water pumps for Bird baths to include. Mine will be shallower and I am thinking about using some found concrete slab cut outs from a demolition for the base, square cut slabs 3" thick @ 12-16" squares, stacked up.
