Great idea! I remember my grandmother sewing two sheets together and sliding a wool blanket inside and tacking the opening closed, essentially creating a duvet cover for a scratchy wool blanket .

Mum would often sew my clothes when I was little (born 1965). Mum would sew my school uniforms or get them from the second hand uniform shop. Mum also knitted me a poncho. I remember mum buying me an eiderdown quilt for winter in Sydney and I know it must have cost a lot as mum looked after it very carefully.

You can buy the most lovely linens in charity shops. Just having the eye to see the good fabric between the worn. As a knitter and crocheter. I also look along the knitwear. Sometimes you can get really lucky and find wool items that are so old fashioned in style no one wants it but it will have you enough luxury yarn to remake something lovely from yarn that will last for years I also make summer dresses from vintage sheets they are one of a kind, have been washed so many times the fabric is soft. Lovely. This is our grandmother's mentality and is true home MAKING

I learned to sew in junior high - yes that was some years ago! I have made lots of clothes, curtains, etc and have done so many repairs! I wish they still taught sewing at school.

The three generations of women in my family before me that I had the fortune of knowing all sewed. I wanted to learn to sew as a very small child, so they would give me the big plastic needles, yarn, and loosely woven cloth (it may have been Aida cloth) to play with as they worked. By the time I was five, I wanted my own apron so badly that I went into grandmother's stash of fabrics, got a needle and thread, and holed up in her bedroom one afternoon making my first apron replicating one from her collection. None of my seams were pressed or anything, but I was on the last stitches of the tie at the waist by the time they found me. I'm still very proud of having figured out the construction and making it all on my own. It was a pink gingham half apron with a pocket on the righthand side and started a lifelong love of aprons complete with a hearty collection of vintage aprons of all styles! Thankfully, I inherited what was left of her fabric collection as well as much of my mother-in-law's, but still have a hard time walking away when I see beautiful vintage fabric. Thank you so much for rescuing that lovely linen and bringing new life to it!

I have a wee bit but it is so precious it gets saved for Altar linens.This weekend I have been truly 'under the weather' so I have turned a collar, darned pillowcases that are not quite bad enough to give up on and blanket stitched and old blanket that had lost its hem. What a wonderful use of this beautiful fabric. Linen is my absolute favorite fabric in the whole world. If you have ever processed flax into linen thread, then wove it into fabric, you know that it is a very labor intensive process. The final product is one of the strongest fabrics ever. Linen does not really wear out; it just gets thinner and thinner. The thinner it gets, the softer it is. I cannot bear to throw away even the tiniest scrap of linen. Diane in NC

For cold Canadian winters I prefer to buy old flannelette sheets to use for pillowcases, large handkerchiefs (no red noses), and ladies 'napkins' and doing a French seam for durability on the pillowcases. Recently picked up a few queen sized flannelette sheets to make workshirts for my 3X sized son. Over here I use my Ott light for all sewing. Love it.

Good day! When my daughters were young I would buy white communion dresses from thrift stores. I would then sew jumpers or beautiful aprons to put over the communion dresses, and my daughters would wear them to school. They loved them. Inexpensive and fun.

Great idea, Jane. I have lots of beautiful old sheets stored in the basement, and I've been waiting for inspiration. They're too nice to go into the rag bin and too threadbare on the edges to keep using routinely. Yes, I have saved old sheets for binding the edges of old towels and washcloths, and I also use the fabric to line homemade purses.

I use a bar magnet set with the edge at the seam depth marker on the plate of my machine that acts as a guide so I can finally sew straight lines! My dressmaking teacher was in charge of quality control for one of the well-known fashion brands and showed me that trick. I have been forever grateful for it!

Brilliant! I actually looked up at amazon and linen pillow cases are between 26 to 35 U.S. dollars for 2. I am not handy at all, I don't do any DIY projects but I have joined a 'buy nothing' local group and have gotten many items for free. When I need work around the house or garden, I hire 'task rabbit' where I can find affordable local taskers. I have my hands full with cooking, cleaning, taking care of the house and our finances, working my 2 businesses and homeschooling :) I dream of one day learning to sew (I crochet), maybe when I retire.

My aunt made Linen pillowcases and she taught how how to it when I was 5 years old They were very old linen sheets she used. She would do beautiful embroidery on them and sell them. I do them as gifts and yes Jane the older the linen the better the quality and feel of it.

I find this very interesting. Here in the states I was taught for a regular pillowcase. 3/4 yard for the body of the pillowcase and 1/4 yard for the top part so you can do things that can match. Or just 1 yard if you want one all same fabric. Then you measure from there if your pillows are bigger. I like your way. I am going to try it next month.

This is such a coincidence. I just picked up a linen/cotton tablecloth from our local friperie(second hand store) for .50 cents in order to make some dish towels. I was on the hunt. Why? Because my daughter wanted some linen tea towels, due to their great absorbency, as a Christmas present and I paid $20. each for them! That’s the going price for new. Now mine will cost less than .10 cents each. I do want to save money but it’s more to repurpose and keep things from going to the landfill. Thanks!

I do remember my Mum making my first sleeping bag for Brownie and Guide camp out of an old heavy eiderdown bed cover. It was very warm and I was sad when I eventually grew too big for it.

I have found a use for those king-size pillow cases that come with my cal king sheets. I take two and use the finished end as the bottom, and I make them into pj bottoms. Lie out and place a pair of pjs on top to cut out patterns, leaving margins for sewing. Then sew up the sides, put some elastic at the top and voila! Pjs. Sheets are usually high thread count, have a soft feel, and the pillowcases make long wearing, soft and pretty pj bottoms. Of course I'm short, so they come to my ankles, but would make capris on taller gals. Some of my favorite are the flannel ones. Hello from oceanside, california 😀

Oh, and because they are sewn already on the sides, you use one for each leg. Then you only have to sew up the inner legs and crotch to fit your frame and put in the elastic at the top.

When we moved into our house twenty years ago my MIL gave me a huge stack of linens from my FILs side of the family. They were downsizing and she was happy to get rid of that heritage, still having enough linens from her mother and aunts. I found a beautiful, beautiful white half-apron - (waistband downwards!) It was stitched, there was a band of crocheted embroidery an embroidered edge - half a dozen techniques, elevated level! My husbands grandmother must have been doing it for some kind of school! It was perfect, and to this day, it adorns my guest-WCs window. It was just wide enough - so I removed the waistband and sewd (?) a tunnel. It is beautiful, it serves a purpose and we remember her effort! Btw, her art deco linen towels (0,50cmx1m) serve as tablecloths. I lay them across the table to serve as two sets of plates! I started to do that in the garden, but why not on the dining table as well? It looks beautiful and IKEA suggests the same idea!

So I have to repurpose standard new (80x80) pillowcases to (40x80)ies to match their bedding, and sew cases for their (smaller) Swedish pillows out of old linens! So then there are naturally scraps to make mittens/hot water bottle covers etc. etc.

I use sheets and pillow case fabric to make clothing for my granddaughters and their dolls. My grandmother told me that her aunt would cut a worn sheet down the middle, top to bottom. Then she would flip each side so that the outside edges were together and run a seam, making a new sheet. The worn part would now be on the outside edge.

You might start with a top/blouse type of thing! I inherited some art deco towels with a damask pattern! If you mirror sich a pattern with a seam in the middle/center, a simple top looks just amazing!

yes, always recycling usable fabric. last year made pillow cases using worn sheets. Linen, real linen, a rare find here, tho sometimes in antique shops at surprisingly affordable prices, but way more than your find.cost. I have a bit of a stash on hand. Also fortunate to have family woven linens from 1800’s that are used respectfully as table cloths and runners...most of these little used in their time..also a couple of sheets. Nothing like the real thing. Love seeing your sewing projects. Susan

To my shame, I am the granddaughter of a gifted needlewoman and milliner; she passed that gift onto my father, but unfortunately it didn't reach me. I love to upcycle. My Aunt gave me a king sized duvet recently which I resized to a queen and used part of the leftovers to make a tote bag which also incorporated an old tshirt that had a hole in it and the other part I used to make a top for myself. Nothing goes to waste in my house.

I do lots as with yourself up cycle or diy. One difference with pillow cases is that I sew the sides with wrong sides together then I turn it wrong side out and sew the sides to enclose the raw edges.

Thank you for the tutorial. I'm going to try to make a curtain for a non standard sized window and there is no pattern. Your tutotial showed me how to cut the material so i dont goof up on the size to sew.

I love old sheets, too. I made kitchen curtains from red checked tableclothes, rice bags from flannel sheets, and pillow covers from sheets. On the video the hem on one side looked narrower. Is there a reason? Thank you, Jane for the inspiration
