Sam Wilde is a new designer for Free Spirit fabrics and I was fortunate to receive his new collection - Florescence to work with. I have wanted to make an optical illusion quilt for ages and this seemed like the perfect opportunity! Don't you just love how it came together? as promised, I will list the sizes at the end of this description.
It really is the support from my lovely Patrons that allows me to keep this show on the road and I am very grateful to each one of you!
You can join them there for the price of a coffee or a craft magazine and watch the content back to the start of 2019! Look in the feature 'Collections' to find what you are looking for!
/ thelasthomelyhouse
Over on my website you will find much more! Here you can shop for some of the things I use in my craft room at The Last Homely House and sign up for the monthly newsletter.
thelasthomelyhouse.co.uk
My daughter Martha and her partner Adam have recently made a beautiful new set of cards for my shop, inspired by all the garden birds that come to visit me in The Last Homely Garden - if you fancy a set - thelasthomelyhouse.co.uk/prod...
The music in this video was chosen from Epidemic Sound and is called Seventh Garden and Remove the Complexities.
If you enjoy watching me make quilts - check out this playlist • Fabric, sewing, patchw...
There is always so much going on here and there is more behind the scenes over on Instagram - kateatthelasthomelyhouse.
Thank you so much for watching!
Love
Kate
xxx
The measurements I used
the 'feature' squares are 5"
the 'shadow' fabric is 1.5" wide and 5.5" long - this will need trimming a little when you sew each one to the square,
The little offset pieces are 1" x 1.5"
make sure you get the shadow layout opposite each other.
The sashing I used was 2" wide.
Have a play with the layout and alter the sizes to suit yourself
Enjoy
xxx

My husband was my maths genius, I’d go running to him, show him what I had and what I wanted to end up with, and he would figure it out. He was also good at drawing my project out for me. I lost my dear husband 3 years ago after 48 years together. I still ask him for help, and eventually we figure it out . Your quilt is amazing, thank you.

I'm so very Happy you chose Sam Wild's Fabrics for this Quilt, it is stunning. The first time I saw that quilt pattern, it was On Donna Jordon's Tutorials, I thought it was magic. Donna used larger blocks but I like it made made with smaller blocks better. I can imagine it with left-over fabrics from some quilts I've made for my family. I imagine it as a peek-a-boo Family quilt for someone. Thanks for the quilting journey, Kate.

I'm definitely on team "strip piece and cross cut" for the black & gray pieces. For one reason, when you cut skinny pieces WOF, the WOF direction is more stretchy than the other (warp? weft?) along the selvage direction. Cutting wide and then cross cutting as you do, means less stretching & distorting when you're chain piecing. But, I'm sure you know all that! Stunning quilt, really good use of your fabrics.

My days are always better when you are in them - love that you have made another beautiful quilt and showed all of us how it is done. I am new to sewing started my first quilt top 8 months ago and that's how I found you by searching postage stamp quilts. You have inspired me to start an EPP out of hexies, I made my first shopping bag by myself - it took you one hour - it took me three days LOL, now I am crocheting my first baby sweater to try something new, I started crocheting around 9 years old and now I am 74, my favorite is crocheting with thread so have made lots of tablecloths - always wanted to make a baby sweater and hat to match and thought just give it a go. You have helped me step out of my comfort zone to do new and different projects Thank you for all of the inspiration - love all of the green out your windows - can't wait to see where you will take me next!!!

Can I make a suggestion? I purchased a book (really a booklet) years ago that has all that figured out for you with all kinds of charts. It is called All-in-One Quilter's Reference Tool by Harriet Hargrave, Sharyn Craig, Alex Anderson, and Liz Aneloski. The copy I have was published in 2004. The reason I bring up the publishing date is because I have been told later editions are not as good or comprehensive.

Have you seen the method that only uses squares? No faffing around with triangles. Jenny from Missouri Star did a tutorial called “Making a charm quilt on point”. It works with any size squares and has a trick to get around cutting triangles. Super-fast too. Sew squares together, two cuts, re-position, sew two seams and ta-DA! On point quilt done! I made one with 10” squares alternating pattern and background and really enjoyed the simple process. 🌼

I agree, the quilt planning notebook is such a help! Ten months ago I started making quilts inspired by your project Linus videos. This quilt is beautiful and really showcases the fabric!
