To clarify, I DID consider using bogies! But the base of the model would have to be rebuilt. I stuck with this instead as it would look much taller and less faithful to the original design otherwise. I just hoped that it would still make turns, much to my avail! Yeah, I think so too! I can only speculate that it's between there being more pieces available in red and perhaps them wanting it to appear more bright and toy-like

Even in the real world, locomotives with more than 2 inline axles have to deal with the issue of turns. They usually do this either by having no flange on some wheels, or by letting the entire axle slide left and right by a small amount.

I have built two locos plus rollingstock in narrow gauge, though the locos (a small red diesel and slightly larger yellow steamer) and carriages (box car, gondola and open passenger cars) are built 7ish studs wide (six studs, plus half to 2/3 stud either side made up of greebling and detailing). They replicate the trains - or tramways - still found in Queensland running on 2’ (610mm) gauge in many districts which cart sugar cane to the mill. They were popular in many amusement and theme parks in Australia, but now only at Dreamworld. Mine are motorised using third party Circuit Cube motors.

I have a idea how you can have the loco have all wheel sets in Since the Cherry Steamer is a 4-4-0 meaning it has 4 lead wheels and 4 driving wheels and 0 Trailing wheels it would be a good idea to use a small pice that pivots to connect the leading wheels with underneath the loco, I also recommend you do the same on the tender and add a few coaches or freight cars and make one of them powered instead

A number of real locomotives had a few flange-less wheels (wheels without a lip to keep them between the rails) help them go around sharper curves- unfortunately Lego only offers this sort of wheel for their large, technic axle steam locomotive wheel. It's been a long time since I built anything, but I remember it being a challenge to come up with wheel arrangements that worked on Lego's sharp curves, while representing what I wanted to create.

Idea: for the center 2 axles on theclarge steamer, use a technic axle & wheels, but with the bricks that hold it on in the center, with 2 studs of room. So instead of this: ▪️🔳▪️▪️🔳▪️ Its this: ▪️▪️🔳🔳▪️▪️ (Note: small black squares are each 1 stud of empty space, the white & black squares are the bricks with technic holes) If this makes no sense, sorry

This is a really awesome build! I remember watching the video of your miniature version ages ago and thought it was awesome since it was a train I'd surprisingly never seen someone make in lego before, despite it having "introductory" moc model potential. I actually really want to build one too now lol Do you think you might cover other locomotives from the game such as the diesel, zepher(?) and big steamers? It feels like a really fun challenge to try and make some of the other engines from each set including some of the special ones such as the Century Limited, Daylight etc.

Another way to solve the wheel problem could be to use individual wheels attached on a 6 stud long technic pin, with 2 1x2 technic bricks in the middle of the base, allowing the wheels to slide side-to-side. It won't look as good off-track on a shelf, but should allow the engine to stay on corners without removing the front wheels. The same could be done with the tender, replacing the set of wheels closest to the engine with this same design. I'll edit this comment with a link to a graphic version of the design when I've got to time if anyone is interested.

Lego 12v and 4.5 v trains had a max of 3 axles for the turns, for larger locomotives they had a central motor or dummy brick built motor (yellow diesel set) then 1 pivoting axel on each side. You could experiment with this and you wouldn't loose any wheels in the engine as well you could add the PF receiver in the boiler like the winter holiday train. These are just suggestions, I'm experimenting with small steam locomotives to. Best of luck

your issue with the curves on this model reminds me of some trouble an actual tourist railway had when they burrowed a steam engine from herritage where they had to redo a curve so it could get around. some lego curves seem stupidly tight so don't feel too bad

Mount the engine's bogies on swivels. My first "Iron Titan" engine (really a boiler with two motor bogies slapped on) could snake around standard Lego corners like nothing. However, if you want to keep the rigid mounting, try larger radius TrixBrix curves. My current Iron Titan (still under construction as of posting this) can negotiate as tight as 56-stud radius.
