JC successfully replicated a 24 year old prop using the exact same technology utilised in the 1993 blockbuster. The prop works exactly like the one seen in the film - with working lights and motorised zooming lenses.

I find it funny and interesting that the actor who played Timmy, Joseph Mazello would later play Eugene Sledge in HBO's "The Pacific". Eugene Sledge was a USMC private who fought in the battles of Peleliu and Okinawa. On Okinawa, the US fielded one of the first night-vision systems as part of the M3 Carbine. It was a massive infrared scope with an IR floodlight. It was definitely heavy as most of its weight was a battery the size of two shoeboxes.

Wait. So you took 3 months to find the EXACT head ratchet mechanism, but 3D printed what held the goggles? I mean, I'm fairly sure you could find that ratchet headset anywhere.
@JurassicCollectables
@JurassicCollectables Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Yeah any ratchet harness would work - but this precise make/model did take 3 months to source. It's a faulty model made of a little used translucent nylon from that time. The welding helmets themselves are fairly abundant - but they rarely come with that exact harness with the label. The 3D printed part was the only part that wasn't a 'found' item, ie it was made by hand, so I felt there was more allowance to do the same there. But yeah, I wanted to get as close as I could to the screen used piece! There's a whole website devoted to these kind of hunts called 'The Replica Prop Forum'. Well worth a visit. Thanks again for watching and your comment 🙂
@DownThePlotHole
@DownThePlotHole 7 жыл бұрын
That really is impressive! As soon as you said you 3D printed a part I thought "Are you insane!?" :p I've done 3D printing before, it can be very costly. What 3D modeler program did you use? Do you do a lot of modelling, or do you have to learn the program especially for this project? Also, where does that 3D scan image come from? Are there any others from the dinosaurs or anything? I'd love to have a go at sculpting a JP dinosaur. :D
@JurassicCollectables
@JurassicCollectables 7 жыл бұрын
This was modelled in Maya, not the best modelling package, but allowed me the most control. I wanted to retain the organic form, and Maya is the software I was comfortable with. The scan images were released by Chronicle Collectibles to promote their licensed replica coming out at a later date. Word is that the lenses will be hand-wound on theirs.
@DownThePlotHole
@DownThePlotHole 7 жыл бұрын
Don't be silly, Maya is one of the best modelling programs, depending on your needs. :p It's perfect for the Night Vision Goggles you just made. :D I'll have to take a look at Chronicle Collectibles. I wonder if their Goggles will live up to yours. :)
@JurassicCollectables
@JurassicCollectables 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think with Maya I was able to work at a low resolution enough to add all the detail, then subdivided to give it that organic, vac-formed appearance. But I think probably a professional might opt for ZBrush. But maya did the job really well
@DownThePlotHole
@DownThePlotHole 7 жыл бұрын
