Looks real good and functional! I might have to try to do one too. I was/am going to try adding a thumb stud (because yes, I'm one of those guys) to a standard SAK blade and move that layer to the right-hand dominate side. The versatility of the Spydie Hole making it ambi friendly is sweet for the majority especially if you were to sale them. I think the only change I would make would only be a personal preference and that would be to grind a bit more on the spring to bring the knife tip up to make it more centered to the axis of the knife handle. Again, that is just a personal aesthetic preference. Great work, love seeing it done! Gonna have to go back and what all your vids now!
@FittoSurvive
@FittoSurvive Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah, trying to bring the Dragonfly blade up (more straight), will then make it loose when opened. The pivot bore would have to be moved for that to work.
@korgan7779
@korgan7779 Жыл бұрын
@@FittoSurvive Hmm, I see. When I'm working on things like that I've lightly filed either the blade where it bottoms out/rests against the spring ( like L < area) or the spring itself which doesn't affect the pivot at all, just the angle of the open blade. I've made some 'idiot marks' on bolsters doing this because I don't necessarily have correct tooling to do it without having the knife fully disassembled such as with Case/Buck.. In this case since you can disassemble it, it would be very easy, or well easier to not screw up but more time consuming because of the need to mock it up after each adjustment to see if you need to remove more.

Always tip up. Tip down means added wasted motivation to open up the blade, it’s just less efficient. Even it it’s not a blade for self defense, it’s simply extra time that should already be cutting open the box/bag/whatever. I use a pocket blade every day and the few times I swap out to one of my tip down blades I’m immediately reminded how much better the other is.

Steel would make the whole knife heavy as a mofo....... I don't think you realize just how much weight that would add to make them the same dimensions out of steel..... In thise size and thickness g10 is incredibly strong..... People just see materials that look like regular old plastic and they assume it's brittle, but they just don't realize how far along we are with material sciences...... G10 is amazingly strong, even in thin form factors like this.... And it can't rust or corrode at all....
@ResilienceOnPurpose
@ResilienceOnPurpose 2 жыл бұрын
@@JasonP6339 I'm not "people", I'm someone who makes knives and things out of steel, G10, etc. A piece of steel (which actually IS already used in other tools like this) little more than the size of a shim would add less weight than a few coins in my pocket. G10 is not some modern miracle material, even in thin "form factors". It's just fiberglass and resin and has been used as circuit boards in cheap electronics everywhere for generations because it's cheap. The choice to use it here is aesthetic, because it meets a color theme. Using steel would potentially allow the spacers to even be thinner and cut down the real annoyance of carrying something like this in the pocket; it's bulk.

The work is well done mate, it's a really cool tool and looks really nicely made for sure, but 1) get yourself a new saw for cutting the G10, that was painful to watch (they make tiny table-top jig-saws and band saws for just such a thing and it would open up some cool design/build ideas to have such a capability) and 2) if you're going to try to "thread" micarta skip it and just run a screw into the material with a small pilot hole so it doesn't crack and cut/grind down the screw tip after it's in place. Those screws WILL fail eventually because the threads in the micarta will deform over time and with use. Or go big-time and use a nut-sert/chicago fastener of some sort with a matching bolt. Those nit-picks aside it's really cool to see what people came up with in terms of modifying SAK's. I remember when that was considered a "high-tech" pocket knife.
@FittoSurvive
@FittoSurvive Жыл бұрын
Thanks a bunch! I definitely agree with needing a new saw... I've actually gone through about 3 since I made this knife. I have done some upgrades, now when I attach a pocket clip to softer materials like micarta or carbon fiber I use knurled brass threaded inserts. amzn.to/3vxbeEt Thanks for the advice!

I was on your website this morning. Beautiful stuff. I also have three different bags by Nutsac. My favorite SAK is the Super Tinker and I will be looking into having one modified with a spyderco blade. SAK knife steel is HORRIBLE...and that is coming from somebody who has carried either a Tinker, Super Tinker or Fieldmaster every day for the last 40 years.
