Not how you prune watermelons. Horrible idea to top. Also removing most of the plant they need tons of sunlight on tons of leaves and tons of water. This makes 0 sense to do it this way

This works if you are growing in a smaller area. Watermelon plants take up a lot of space. If you let the vine crawl. There’s no point in having a a bunch of little watermelons. Topping ensures it gets bushier with more flowers. Pulling the smaller fruit and trimming focuses the energy to the healthier looking melons so they can grow bigger. This is a great method- and it works with a lot of fruiting plants.
