I'm not an apiarist (that's a beekeeper I think) but you really know your stuff, and I now have a good introduction on how to deal with the Viroa mites and understand what nasty little bastards they are, and how devastating to a hive they can be. Like everything in life, we only get back what we put into it, and you certainly care about how you keep and look after your bees, your reward must be to have some of the best honey out there!

Thanks for the comment! And, yes, the honey that comes off of these hives in the spring is my year round reward for my efforts. Doesn't get much better.

We like the goldenrod honey at our house. I actually try to get a fall harvest of goldenrod honey every year. Not only for my wife and my self but also for some regular honey customers who also like the darker richer goldenrod honey

This is so interesting and so important. I buy when I can find it a type of honey called Clary Sage. It works so go on my allergy’s. People do not realize just how important bees are to us living. Hopefully you will do another video with the bees, maybe in 5 days. I would love to see it again.

Really interesting... I always wonder how you don't get stung... but you don't seem to worry about it. If you put a switch into the line you would not have to do the fiddly bit with the battery cables... just a suggestion.

I need to get a vaporizer! I’ve been doing the oa drip and the vaporizer seems easier.
@falllineridge8 ай бұрын
I can't comment on the dribble because I've never used it. The vaporizer method is simple, but it just takes a while because it's spread out over a couple of weeks.

Wes, you and Andrew with @TheKellysCountryLife should do a collaboration video, especially since he is looking into a sawmill… Both of you have similar content and I believe live fairly close (within a day’s drive) to one another… A collaboration would introduce your audience to him and his to yours increasing each of your views and subs… Good stuff!

I appreciate what you do to protect honeybees - I have 2 friends that are beekeepers and love getting fresh honey. They rent out their hives to growers to help with their crops. Thanks for the great information - keep up the good work. How often do you get stung doing this with the hives? Stay safe.
@falllineridge8 ай бұрын
It just depends on how fussy they are. I got stung maybe 3 times this time.

Have you had a problem with hive Beatles? I have a problem with them and I’m new to beekeeping and wondered if you had any recommendations to get rid of them.
@falllineridge8 ай бұрын
I have them, but strong hives will keep them in check.
@nickd59438 ай бұрын
Dakotataylor I know a method to get rid of small hive beatles and it’s peppermint candy disc. I know it sounds stupid but it works and I have proof. First I heard about this thru KZbin watching beekeeping channels. ( I’m gearing up to restart my apiary this up coming year) I was at a friends house and we where talking and he was having a bad problem with hive beatles. I had seen videos about peppermint and told him about it. So he gave it a try. We put the mints on the hive that day. (I would guess there where 15ish beatles on the top of the frames) the hive was beetle free with in a week. All you do to give the bees the mint is open the top put four to eight mints on top of the frames once every week or two. Weekly to get rid of them, every two weeks to maintain beetle free hive.

Hi Wes. Does the vapor rise in the boxes by itself, or does it only move because of the bees moving their wings? Have good days!
@falllineridge8 ай бұрын
It would rise naturally I'm sure, but the second a foreign substance enters the hive, the bees go nuts trying to get it out. They do the same with smoke from the smoker. So, I plug up the entrances and they flap their little wings and blow it all around. They're very helpful.
@leeneely54578 ай бұрын
Did you make that vaporizer?
@falllineridge8 ай бұрын
No, I ordered it from somewhere. I forget where. There are lots of good options out there.

@drcdrdoct98643 ай бұрын
You may want to cut out those queen cells. We use a different type of vaporizer AND a pad during the winter. Mites will wipe out a hive and the illusion of a mite immune bee gives false hope and leads to lost hives.
@snv6488 ай бұрын
Why don’t you use the dribble method to kill the mites?
@robertswan94348 ай бұрын
It's a bit late for effective treatment - you want the bees rasing the winter bees (so the fall bees) to be clean and mite free which will result in the healthiest winter bees. Dribble just treats the winter bees directly which is much less effective to have survival, just a lot easier time wise.
@falllineridge8 ай бұрын
Robert pretty well covered it. I want bees going into the winter to be clean and healthy, the dribble method only treats bees during the winter (because the hive has to be broodless for it to work).
@sibongilemxaba49485 ай бұрын
Have you tried using a heat gun to melt the wax instead of scrapping it off? I saw a KZbinr (White house on the hill) do it. Might save you some honey.
@JackCossairt8 ай бұрын
Do you treat for tracheal mites ?
@falllineridge8 ай бұрын
No, never had trouble with them.
@stevenpeterson84448 ай бұрын
is this self perpetuating though? seems like you’re selecting for susceptible bees. relatively new beekeeper here, but seems like getting a zpack for your cold every year.
@falllineridge8 ай бұрын
I see what you're saying. I could let the bees go and hope a hive or two is resistant enough to mites to survive, but then I would probably lose most (probably all) of my bees. So, for me it's a matter of not losing my bees. You can also look at it as proper livestock care. Kind of like worming pigs or vaccinating cows.
