I go through common ways a professional triathlete earns money. It covers most of the common ways, and generally talks about how a pro triathlete makes a living.

There’s an Aussie age grouper who went through how much triathlon costs him every year.would be interesting to see that type of video from a pro

The 3rd category is super important, especially the content creation, I’ve seen pro’s be able to negotiate way better contracts and sponsorships because of it. I do wish that Ironman would rework itself and be able to be a better financial decision for pro athletes, they just have no idea how to sell themselves or you ( in order to provide bigger prize money) or they stop being greedy 😅. Good stuff Ben!

Love to see the sport grow, and it's only good news for the athletes (financially).

Very interesting Ben! I'm sure there are some crazy numbers being batted around right at the very top, and very well deserved it is too. Hope you're nailing the training

This is round 2 for me commenting on the Stache. I"m jealous. Next youtube video can be on your mustache routine and products used to enhance growth. Ben Kanute = USA triathlon is back. Courtney: how can I convince my wife that the stache is a positive thing? thanks

informative video... how the sport is growing now can be beneficial for the athletes. and the 3rd category not only helps the pro athletes, it also inspires the hobbyists and a learning platform too.

Ben - love seeing all your growth over the years. How do I get in touch with you and/or your agent? I have several product lines and would like to support a few triathletes, but not sure who to contact. Look forward to speaking with you and/or your agent soon.

It’s interesting to think about it from the brands perspective. Getting 1 person into triathlon is way more valuable to a bike brand than getting one person into basketball for a company like Nike. One triathlete can spend thousands on expensive bikes, wetsuits etc. so even though it’s a small sport it makes sense for them to invest in pro athletes.

U can go a bit more specific in these type of videos. U could say for example: I am sponsored by X company that makes the ring im wearing in this video. The sponsorship contract with them is 100 USD ( intentional example)/year, so thats my salary. For every 3rd or 2nd place they add 20 USD to that, for every win they add 30 more USD to that. So in a year, if i win 3 races, i wil get 100 base+ 50+50+50. u can talk using these fictious amounts and company names to make ur point, without divulging info that u want kept as a secret, but offering us the viewers an insight of how contracts work, what are the bonuses in percentages, or some peculiar demands or something. u were too broad, ur parents friends/and urs will still be left in the dark a bout how u make money :) Cheers

What about: 1. PTO year end bonuses 2. Appearance fees (which, even in a year without the Collins Cup, can go to five figures per event… *cough*Roth*cough*) 3. Challenge Family year end bonuses 4. National federation funding (even if you’re limited to long course folk… some of them are short course at the same time; and French long course athletes get funding AFAIK).

Very well thought out and presented Ben. Thank you for pulling back the covers on the business of Triathlon for Pros. Where do you see your biggest long term earnings potential?

It’s always best to develop sponsor contracts as it creates a stable environment. Winning races is the best way to make money because you earn prize money, and sponsorship money follows. Relationships and networking is key, but when you race well (your primary job), everything else follows.

Dies appearance money not play a role as well, or ist that limited to the top 0.1%?

Did you start out without any sponsorships (namely bike) and gained those as you worked your way up? As a competitive age grouper whose won some races, I know a bike sponsorship is huge. I’m on a 2014 Felt DA, and wonder how much better I could be with bike support, meaning equipment - not even salary. Just not sure how one goes about getting one!

Pro Triathletes are so lucky with a PTO billionaire pumping money in. What other niche women's sport can someone make 100K for 4 hours worth of work?
@JRowlette

4 hours worth of work? I think you’re forgetting the hundreds of hours of training that it takes to be able to do that “4 hours worth of work”.

Lucky ? There are training 30+ hours a week and the big PTO bucks are only at the top of the sport. They were a few 100k races for winners over a decade ago. Prize money generally hasn't realy gone up much outside of PTO. It would be fair to say most pros outside the top 50 are scratching to earn a living
